William's weakness is literally run support. The run D would get worse.

He isn't a starter for a reason.

- I've even said in an LVE thread i started, that its not just LVE that is the problem with our run defense, - although he is still a major reason himself.

- Some faults can be drawn to how our edge/ends are not sustaining their lanes and position too.
And that's the Armstrong, Fowler and Williams group too.

- How much is it more Armstrong than Osa at the edge ?
Or Osa than Armstrong at the ends, and what alignment are they more going with ?

- The Armstrong, Fowler, Williams are terrific edge rushers, vs pass.. but too many times opposing runners are getting too easy bounces on us around the corner.
Unless the starter (Armstrong) gets better, i tend to think we'll continue to have issues vs run at the edges,..

- Now could a team option be having 285 lb Osa Diggy more on the end/edges than Armstrong ?
That would be according to the downs and sets/packages and player- personnel sets Quinn strongly prefers

- This past week vs Lions, they were successfully bull-powering us in the interior too.

I remember last year when Gallimore pushed the Washington C back into the QB hurting the C's leg in the process. It was an impressive display of power, but we have seen so little of that. I really expected him to be much better this year. Honestly, watching him this year I don't think he has been that much worse than the other DTs.

Wrong. Go watch his tape this season. Sam Williams is a BEAST against the run.
Are you talking about highlights or actual game footage. Williams can make some splash plays, but he is not a stout run defender right now. Right now he is basically a young Robert Quinn

As I watch the tape I don't see him being a liability in the run game, but I'm not seeing a beast either. I'd much rather him get more snaps over Fowler, and probably even Armstrong at this point. Williams may be just as good if not a better run defender than either of those two, but that is a fairly low bar. Looking at the Detroit game though he had the big stop where he basically body slammed the RB, but he also came through untouched on the play. I don't see him consistently playing well against the run, but to be fair he hasnt had much of a chance either.

You do know that DLaw is one of the best run-stopping DEs in the league, if not the best. Why are you taking him out?

The poor run defense is a combination of lack of personnel and scheme. Quinn call all those twists and stunts and get lineman out of position, he also likes to play 3 safeties in his base defense.

Quinn might be a good comp. Believe he had 10 sacks for us as a fun for hire but gosh he did NOTHING against the run.

I hope Williams can develop to be a 3 down player, but if not, hopefully he can at least be a stud situational pass rusher.

If we check around the NFL, a good number of teams are running that 3 safety nickel look as well.
i think it's chess vs checkers with how it's used,.. when it is used .downs, situations and distances, etc

Not every team can run the ball ..ala Rams ...
But the better teams that successfully run the ball, whether first downs or short yd, will be able to take advantage of those multi-safety look.

Quinn has always been my comp for him (Mafe too). He has the build to he an ok run defender, but his play style is always going to be aggressive against the pass. He will probably be playing at least 60%-70% but 2024, and possibly 2023 but he will probably come out in obvious run downs

If I stand correct Quinn uses those 3 safety alignments, even on obvious run downs. I would like to see Parsons playing a little more off the ball and replace Kearse in obvious run downs.
