If Dalton signs with another team next year, do Cowboys get a comp pick?

So if Dalton backs up Dak for 1 year and then signs a 3 year deal with somebody next year to be their starting QB, do the Cowboys get a comp pick for Dalton? If so, I would think it would be a high comp pick? Anybody know if that’s true?

Yes it’s true. How much he signs for determines the comp pick. And he must sign during the first free agency period (I.e. before the draft).

Yes, this is subject to a later comp pick.

So hopefully someone will sign him to a long term contract after the season finishes and it's another way that we can benefit from it.

If he signs somewhere with a likely starting position, he would likely get something like 3 yrs for 40-50m, which would probably be a 5th round pick.

I personally would like to have him around as a backup rather than an extra 5th round pick.

I don't think theres going to be a huge market for a team to count on a 33yo with limited upside to start at QB.

I think he ends up staying home for the remainder of his career.

He would qualify for a 2022 compensatory pick next offseason if he completes his 1 year deal. He does not impact this year’s comp formula for either Dallas or Cincinnati.

And as for the 10 year rule I’ve seen mentioned a couple times, QBs are excluded from that rule. Quarterbacks are completely dependent on the CFA formula, regardless of years of experience.

I really like the scenario where he settles into Dallas and gives them a great backup for years at a price something like this. If he does find a starting job next year he could bring back a decent comp pick or at the very least, cancel out one of our signings in the formula.

You don't think Andy Dalton will sign a deal next offseason worth enough to get a comp pick? The deal he signed with us would bring back a pick. I have no doubt in my mind he will bring back the highest comp pick we have ever had. He will sign somewhere next year for $15 million+ per season to go be a starter. That will bring back a 3rd.

I love that scenario. Dalton has already made ** money, he is at home and he gets a good at a SB ring. Something he had no shot at in Cincinnati.
