If the Cowboys got Patrick Peterson where would they play him?

OK guys, I understand it is highly unlikely we land Peterson (CB, LSU). Odds are stacked against us, I understand that. So lets pretend like we are living in a fantasy world and the Cowboys are able to take him at pick 9 or trade up to get him, whatever. Where do you think the COWBOYS will play him. Will Peterson play corner or safety in Dallas' new scheme. I hear experts like Mike Maycock (who I respect highly as talent evaluator) say Patrick is more suited to play the FS in the NFL because of his size. What do you guys think?

He definitely isn't a poor tackler. I can't speak for anyone else, but I do think he's too good at corner to use at FS.

Newman has already openly discussed moving to safety if Peterson arrived in Dallas. His comments were also subliminally intended to peak the front office interest in retaining him despite his current contract in my opinion, but I do feel that he was being mostly genuine.

Echo this, but I admire his comments that he will play wherever he is asked to.

But Id rather have Huff who is 5 years younger, should be a bit cheaper, and has proven he can play that spot.

Newman may need to do some restructuring if/when we get PP. They can possibly give him more guaranteed money this season but lessen his cap hit for the future since his days are just about numbered.

But if they can sign Huff for a deal similar to Atogwe's, draft PP to play corner, then I think Newman might just be gone regardless. At that point on the roster they would have Patrick Peterson and Jenkins, 2 1st round picks. Scandrick, who is in the show me something year, and probably another rookie CB.

I never like the idea of dumping proven players for unproven ones, even when that player appears to be a sure bet like Patterson.

I understand that Newman's cap number is unfriendly, but I'd find a way to make it work and keep him around for competition for a starting spot, whether at corner or free safety.

That way if something happens and Peterson is slow to adjust to the NFL, Dallas is prepared for it. Stop cutting vets and hoping an unproven guy can just step in and take their place. (If everything works out, then you can dump the vet.)

I'm almost 100 percent sure the Cowboys can find a way to rework Newman's contract if they want to keep him.

What if the only way to get Huff would be to cut Newman loose? The only real big salary that will most likely be gone is Barber and Leonard Davis. The rest dont have huge numbers IIRC

I will be surprised if that's the case. Dallas will only get rid of Newman if the Cowboys think he is at the breaking point of his career and therefore not worth the money. They have shown in the past that they know how to work the cap to keep the players they want AND add the free agents they want.

Any "big salaries" cut will happen only because Dallas doesn't think the player is worth paying. Jerry Jones has shown that in the past, and I can't see any reason to expect it to change.

depends on who we get in free agency. If we can get starting quality safeties like Huff or Weddle and Pool or Manning then I would release Newman and play Peterson at that spot.

If we can't get a starting quality FS then I would have to keep Newman and put Peterson at FS.

I think the best case scenario would be Newman at CB and Peterson at FS because...........

It tells us that Ryan likes Newman and wants him at CB which is a good thing.

I also think Peterson at FS would be a beast. To use a BB analogy, he's a five tool player. I could envision him all over the field making everyone and every part of our defense better.

Much like Browner, Dawkins and Reed did for their defenses for years.

He would definitely play CB. Peterson is more talented and not as stiff as guys like Antrel Rolle.

That being said, I don't see any scenarios where he falls to #9.

FS until TNew is gone. I think TNew and Jenkins start at CB and Peterson is too good to not have a spot in the secondary so he will be the "default" FS. That said, he actually would probably play a hybrid role like Charles Woodson next season in Double R's defense. IMHO.
