Why? Prescott is signed for the next four seasons and Lance is a FA in March.

All they’d be doing is giving the rest of the league a look at him.

That trade made no sense under any realistic circumstance at any point. Just Jerry playing with his toy, and further evidence that he isn’t any good at this.
The Cowboys want to resign Lance, but not at a high price...............how do you do that if Lance is going to be a free agent???

You do not play him one single snap, dont let anybody in the league get a look at him and that way it is highly unlikely Lance gets a big offer in free agency. Dallas will offer him a reasonable contract, not anything close to what Dak is getting, but reasonable backup money and with no other team offering starting money, Lance will resign.

That is the only logical scenario from that trade, nobody trades a 4th round pick for a one year rental. They want to resign Lance, but for cheap. Not playing him is the only possible way for that to happen because if he plays and looks decent, he will get an offer too big for the Cowboys to match come March.

And no, Lance is not being considered for a starting job, that is Dak's role and his name is now etched in stone as the starter after 240 mill guaranteed. They want Lance as a long term backup, nothing more.

Dak is breaking down. Next year it will be a Achilles rupture. Our O line is undergoing big time changes now, and we don't have the draft capital necessary to complete the transition away from players who are very much underperforning at their current rate of pay. Zak is done and so is Steele. There is no money available to replace them.

Jerry made a beautiful bed to look at until you pulled back the top sheet and realized the mattress was old and stained.

Even as someone who really likes the skillset of Trey Lance I think this is the worst possible solution for the Cowboys. A north of 30 year old Dak Prescott is likely to be a more traditional passer. Trey Lance in order to have any success in this league is going to require an offense with a lot of designed QB runs, read options, and RPOs. As a true developmental player down the depth chart it makes sense. As a backup I just don't see how it works for the simple fact that if he were to enter the game you'd have to have 10 other players on the field change adapt their style of play they have been working on all offseason. I just dont think it makes sense from the Cowboys perspective to bring him back nor do I think he was ever truly in the backup QB competition for this exact reason unless he played above and beyond.

I also doubt Lance would want to return to the Cowboys unless he has no other options or possibly if McCarthy returns as there would be a level of familiarity there. The best route Lance could take would be going to compete for a backup job for a team like Baltimore, Philly, Washington, Indy, etc where if he has to enter a game or multiple games for a stretch the offense would keep 80% of the playbook available to them instead of keeping 30% and looking to install new plays/packages mid season.

Should they tank (lose out) and secure a higher draft pick for next year's draft?

I mean, if the Cowboys lose to the Bengals, they would be at 5 - 8 with only 4 games left in the season. A loss on Monday Night against the Bengals would pretty much eliminate our Cowboys from reaching the playoffs, so why not lose out and secure a much higher draft pick?

What say you?
They will be playing Carolina, Tampa, Philthy and Washington. They don't have to tank to lose them all.

Carolina's QB is playing much better. They have a couple of good Wide receivers and they have a very good running back and a decent O line. We could loose all of our remaining games and loose them all quite easily. 5 wins and 12 losses is certainly possible.

Agreed. And for next year that is the best scenario.

I would say "Tank baby, tank!" but then I see who our front office is and get dismayed either way.

Yes. Not tank on purpose. But play all the younger players as much as they can. Including Trey.
But we know Jerry is senile and will not do it.

A loss means the best they can do is 9-8. And will only be competing for the 7th seed. Washington is at what, 8 wins. This pretty much eliminates Dallas with 4 games left. If Dallas loses. Especially of Washington wins this week as well. As then there is Seattle, Arizona, Rams, TB Atlanta all fighting for their division and that 7th seed As well. And they all are ahead of Dallas. Then there is SF in that mix with Dallas too.

Minnesota and GB battling for 5 and 6 seed.
Exactly. Tanking leave a mark on players. Playing your young guys is how you develop guys for next year
