Seems there are mixed opinions on Waters, he is being brought in for depth, he is being brought in to start.

He will get the same offer as Moore, it will take a lot more then they offered Moore to get him here.

So if he indeed signs next week will it be over or under $2.75M for the year?

I would say over and he would be coming to start.

Does anyone actually think he's being brought in for depth?

As for numbers?

I think he gets $2.5 million.

If that's what they offered Moore, I will say under. They obviously like Moore...more, otherwise they wouldn't have gone after him first. Waters needs to think here, this is only place he wants to play, what the heck is wrong with making a cool $2 million to play for the Cowboys in your home state, particularly since the team is oozing with talent and potential?

$2.5 million...at most. Otherwise, let him walk.

There have been reports that they went after Waters first, but his numbers where to high, so they then approached Moore who turned down $2M, so you have to believe Waters number is significantly north of $2M.

If the reports are true.

My guess is 2.6 million.

I can't see a scenario where he's brought in as anything but a starter. I could see them having gone with Moore first if they thought Moore might come cheaper for a stop-gap player. I'd say the $2.5M mark is pretty close to what we're probably looking at in order to bring him in, so I guess that's the under.

His deal with the Pats was for 5.5 mill over two years. I'd expect something similar here.

One thing to note is that if we do sign him before the season, his 2013 salary will be fully guaranteed b/c of his # of year of service.

Honestly if we can get him in for less than 3 mill a year that is likely a bargain. Yes, he is older but his last two years in the league were outstanding. Even at 36, he's clearly better than any G we have presently.

I can't see how he wouldn't start. Even off the couch, he's better than our current guys

My thought/gut on this is he is he is asking around, a little north of $3M and the boys have offered less then that and the boys are trying to determine if they are going to go up. I think that is why you heard the voices coming so quickly from Oxnard, that Leary's injury does not change anything. They wanted to send a message to Waters, don't think that now your number can go higher.

This.

We should have made this move several years ago, but better late than never.

I was all in with you a few years ago on Waters. Now, it's a closer call for me. He's two years further down the road, spent some time away from football, and is pretty demanding about the circumstances he's willing to play under (as is his right, but he's still being more particular than I'd like). If we didn't need a veteran signing there to replace Livings or if Mack hadn't spent so much time hurt the last two camps, I'd be tempted to roll with what we've got. As it is, I think its safest to probably bring him in.

I have a great deal of confidence in him being prepared and ready to go.

He's a man of great character and I don't see him phoning it in for a paycheck.

And he's done exactly this before to the tune of a Pro Bowl and Super Bowl appearance.

And a year off from the wear and tear may actually benefit him.

And he's better than any guard we have stepping off of his couch, so that doesn't hurt either.

If he was retired, he would have said he's retired, personally, I think he signs with the Cowboys soon.

How much is too much? It seems to me that is what the boys are asking themselves.

I think I agree with all this. I love his character, and he's always been healthy or played through it. Not too worried about him quitting, or anything like that. I do worry that, even though he might be in very good shape, he could come in and get hurt because he's just been out of the league too long. One of those things where you just can't simulate NFL wear and tear now matter how you stayed in condition. Or that his legs will just give out at some point, which is what happens to these guys, eventually.
That said, ordinarily, I'd have zero interest in a 36 yo player who missed all of camp and comes at a premium, so the fact that I think bringing him in probably makes sense says a lot about my regard for the player. He was a very good OL for a very long time. It's just a roll of the dice anytime you sign someone at his age and at this point in the offseason.

That's a tough one to answer. We need the cap space, so there's definitely a limit on what we should offer here.

Whether he plays up to expectations or not, he'll be better than what we have already.

Ah, did not know that. I really would like him here, he gives us a great deal more flexibility than we currently have. Of course, he probably knows that too. LOL. We'll see what happens soon.

Can't argue with anything you've said here.

But I've always been a risk/reward type and I definitely believe reward outweighs risk here.

I think that's likely, but it's not necessarily a given. If his legs have gone out, he very well could be completely done at 36. Or it could be a case where he plays well for 10 weeks and then his play trails off late when you need him most.
