If we take a Tackle in Round 1 don't get your hopes up

I wouldn`t put Sherrod with the others. He is not the 2 or 3 year project that the others are. He is close to being very good and he has room to get better.

No he's not a project, he's about as good as he'll ever be which is just solid. He'll never be a Pro-Bowler, just an average starter in this league and I for one don't like to spend 1st Rounders on just solid RTs.

Sherrod is a good technician with merely average tools.

That's not necessarily true, we've done pretty well going the FA route in the past. Lots of good players hit FA every year, teams just can't afford to keep everybody and there will be some solid RTs out there this year.

Even if we were going to change our philosophy, this would be a terrible year to start.

As I said in a previous post , the Cowboys have put themselves in this position over a period of years. This may be a terrible year to start, but it has to start sometime. I disagree with your opinion on free agency. If I was an owner , the first guys that I would keep would be the free agents that brought value . Never would I let a quality player walk that would play for a reasonable amount. The FA that are not signed usually don`t offer great value at the price they are asking , but another team will overpay. I don`t want that to be Dallas overpaying. L. Davis is a good example.

I thought the same until I watched him over the last half of the season. IMO technique is the area he needs to improve in most. He has good size (with room to grow), very good feet, gets to second level , smart , good run blocker and plays with attitude. He needs to work more technique ( hand placement , etc ).

Every year the draft is labeled as weak... There are gonna be players to be found. Hopefully we can find a couple that can contribute right away.

I put Carimi - Sherrod

as having potential to be all pros

"he's about as good as he'll ever be "

and you know this how ??????????

from your years as a football coach

and who said anything about using a top ten on them

maybe 15 an get a extra pick

let me ask that Question

None of these Tackles if put up against the last two drafts would be anything but late first rd picks if they were lucky.

I think Solder is going to be a pretty good football player once he grows into his body a little bit. He could be dominating but he won't be ready to start for a season or two IMO.

I think Gilbert is a real nice RT option. There are others. Cramini is a guy that I also think will be a nasty player. I like the guy but there is value in the first 3 to 4 rounds at OT IMO. It's just that they are not day one starters and honestly, who the hell wants to start a rookie at OT in the NFL? QB is too important to take those chances unless you absolutely have to.

No, because of his average physical tools. He's not overly powerful and doesn't stand out as being this dancing bear in pass protection. He's solid but All-Pro is a stretch.

I think Carimi will be ready to go day 1.

He's a 4 year starter and is physically as good as anyone.

It will be a easy transition for him.

Of all the OT, I believe that he and Gilbert are probably closest to being ready but neither is ready. A lot depends on what team and what kind of offense they go to but honestly, they are not ready. To me, no player is ready to come right into the NFL and start. Some do it and are successful but that's not how I think it should be. There are other things involved. It's not just the game. It's life style, it's practice habits, it's being able to function in a grown man's world when your still 21 or so and much, muich more. It's just easier, IMO, for these guys to come in and sit for awhile before they are thrown in to the spot light, so to speak.

I do like the guy very much thou and you are correct in that physically, he is probably ready to compete. JMO Catch.

None of these guys are long term solutions.

You just don't know that. Nobody thought Roger Saffold was capable of being a good starter last year, and he was. Nobody thought much of Tom Brady or Tony Romo. Nobody thought Marques Colston would catch 60 passes as a rookie. You think you know that nobody in this draft class is capable of starting, but you just plain don't know that.

I agree with this to an extent but you have to weigh it. We lost our QB to a Rookie mistake last year. If your playing a rookie at OT, he could be capable physically but it's what he doesn't know or hasn't seen that can kill you. You just have to weigh those things. I'm a big believer in allowing rookies to sit if possible. You get a better product when they do see the field. JMO

Carimi is going to be a stud and nothing will make me think otherwise.

I'm not sold on anyone else but I'll buy every bit of Gabe Carimi stock there is.

You are sounding like you're wearing rose colored glasses about this guy. I like Gabe, but declaring that he is going to be a stud in the NFL? That's going a bit far. The last OL guy in the draft that I had no doubt was going to be a stud was Joe Thomas. Everyone else, I would in no way declare they were going to be a stud before actually even being drafted.

Ok I shouldn't say a guaranteed stud. But he'll be a quality guy year in and year out from day 1 imo.

When it comes to the draft I personally like to look for sure things and imo out of all the Offensive Tackles he is the biggest sure thing to be a good player every week for you.

The entire draft is rarely weak, but sure, there are certain positions that are weak from to year. There is no doubt this is a weak QB class.

I think Tyron Smith is the closest to being a sure thing. He just might have to wait 1-2 years before he is ready.

I think he's a decent prospect if you are looking for a LT. I don't know that he will ever be a RT.

See that's the thing. Will he get bigger? If not you just drafted a blocking Tight End.

Carimi is more of a sure thing than Smith.

I agree with you on most points. It it better to let rookies sit if possible. The problem is that the Cowboys have let the OL get in this position and now there is really not a good way to fix it without taking risk. IMO opinion the correct way would be to address the OL through the draft over the next few years until a solid line is built. After a solid line is established , spend a 2nd or 3rd round pick every year on the line to keep it maintained. The key to the whole thing is scouting. I honestly have doubts about the Cowboy`s scouting process when it comes to the OL. You make a good point about a rookie being physically able to do the job. That is why the scouting staff has to do a good job of picking smart players that are willing to spend time watching film and studying the playbook. I just hope Jerry stays away from the project players for a while.
