If we take a Tackle in Round 1 don't get your hopes up

I agree with you on most points. It it better to let rookies sit if possible. The problem is that the Cowboys have let the OL get in this position and now there is really not a good way to fix it without taking risk. IMO opinion the correct way would be to address the OL through the draft over the next few years until a solid line is built. After a solid line is established , spend a 2nd or 3rd round pick every year on the line to keep it maintained. The key to the whole thing is scouting. I honestly have doubts about the Cowboy`s scouting process when it comes to the OL. You make a good point about a rookie being physically able to do the job. That is why the scouting staff has to do a good job of picking smart players that are willing to spend time watching film and studying the playbook. I just hope Jerry stays away from the project players for a while.

You make some good points. The problem that have seen, or at least think I've seen, is that we seem to struggle with identity on the OL. Really, I think that this can be said about the entire team but particularly the OL. We draft and seem to call games as if we are the old San Diego Chargers but we bring in OL players that would seem to fit a power running team. I mean, I think you can be both but you have to understand how to do that. I think we haven't in the past. I am hopeful that this changes under Red and with Ryan on board. The real problem is that we are in our window now. We really don't have multiple years to develop an OL. I think your right about drafting players but I think we probably have to look to FA to pick up some stop gap guys until the younger players are ready. Romo is 31 now. It won't be too long before we have to start looking at a replacement for him. That's going to take a lot of resources when that day comes. The time is now for us I think.

The Cowboys needs to make the decision on what type of linemen they want. One half power , the other more agile. That is a good point. I like power football myself. The Romo window is closing fast so a stop-gap FA or two might be the answer, but the OL still needs to be addressed with the draft. This OL problem should have been addressed in 2008 and 2009. Brewster and Alex Barron have been Jerry`s answers so far and I think we both know how that has turned out. My biggest fear is that Jerry will overpay a couple JAG linemen and consider the problem solved.

Rookie offensive linemen have a better chance of starting early at G and RT, and Carimi has shown he can mix it up inside, which is why I would love him in the mid to late 1st. Colombo is done, so I could see Carimi either replacing him or settling in at guard, pushing Davis outside to RT.

I'd love to trade down to 18 with San Diego, picking up their 2nd, leaving them with the Jets 2nd. That could net us something like

1) Gabe Carimi RT
2) Paea/Taylor DT
2) Rahim Moore FS
3) Davon House DB
4) Orlando Franklin G

No, because of his average physical tools. He's not overly powerful and doesn't stand out as being this dancing bear in pass protection. He's solid but All-Pro is a stretch.

and you know this how ??????????

because your a coach ? of what O line ? which pro team ?

your just like the rest of us - JAG

Carimi and Sherrod are both starters day one

I agree with you on both Carimi and Sherrod , but you really deflated my ego to know that I am JAG.:laugh2:

I know we need offensive line help but you're not going to find it through the draft, at least not anyone that can help this year. This Tackle class is historically bad, like Micheal Jackson bad, and just because of the premium on the position guys like Nate Solder and Tyron Smith are being labeled as first rounders.

Take a look at the past 2 drafts and the Tackles who were selected in round 1.

2010: Trent Williams, Russell Okung, Anthony Davis, Bryan Bulaga

2009: Jason Smith, Andre Smith, Eugene Monroe, Michael Oher

These guys were leaps and bounds better than the Tackles in this draft who fans seem to be desperately pushing into round 1 just because of premium of the position.

"But we need an offensive tackle, this class can't be THAT bad. Look, Nate Solder is big and used to play Tight End, and Tyron Smith is really small but he looks like he can move well. Gabe Carimi played at Wisconsin, he's gotta be good. See.... we can make this class look decent."
- Desperate Cowboys fans

If any of these guys are asked to start in their rookie seasons they will be labeled a bust faster than Jerry Jones can say "How Bout Them Cowboys!!". None of them are ready, Tackle is one of the hardest transitions to make from college to the pros and you want to throw one of these guys into the Lions Den when they didn't even dominate in college?

If we take a Tackle in round 1 then so be it, we have zero depth and could use youth to develop, but I'm not naive enough to think that whoever we took will be a starter for us this year and I hope none of you guys are either.

Bulaga has turned out okay, but I wouldn't go swinging around the "leaps and bounds better" moniker. I think Carimi will be as good or better than Bulaga. Dude pulls fast and blows guys up in the gap. I think he's more of a RT than a LT, though, because he's not as quick as the guys that play LT like Oher, Free, etc.

If we get Carimi and Moore in the top of our draft, I will do my dance.
