I'm not against drafting a kicker. Not even against drafting a kicker early. But drafting a kicker in the first round is ridiculous.

1. You SURE Brett Conway was drafted in the first round?

2. Conway isn't in the NFL.

3. Janikowski is a good reason NOT to draft a kicker in the first round.

4. Nugent has hit on a whopping 62% of his kicks so far this year. Another good reason NOT to draft a kicker in the first round.

5. Another reason you don't draft a kicker in the first round, obviously, is because you DON'T HAVE TO DRAFT A KICKER IN THE FIRST ROUND TO FIND A GOOD KICKER.

6. If you find ONE person that agrees with you about drafting a kicker in the first round I'll be shocked. Absolutely shocked.

For the original post...

Conway was a third-rounder, I believe.

This is a good draft for OL which happens to be the biggest need on the team. Hopefully one of Tucker/Pettiti proves he can the RT of the future. Then we can get a LT prospect in the first round and groom him for a year at OG before we have him take over from Flo.

A young WR would also be wise. Crayton looks like he is a future #2 WR but we are still missing a #1. This is a lesser need than OL because good WRs are far more plentiful than good OL.

I think FS should be found in FA - should have taken Dwight Smith his past year when we had the chance.

Conway wasn't a 1st round pick.

I can think of 2, maybe 3 kickers who went in round 1. 2 I am sure of. Steve Little and Sebastian Janikowski.

That high draft picks are used to build a winning team not fill holes-kickers or O line. The cowboys have done well drafting good Oline in later rounds.

You need skilled playmakers for the draft. The first round we need to draft someone like QB Brady Quinn. Is leaving the Weis school of offense. Bledsoe is good but the future needs to be thought of.

2nd round a WR

3rd round a FS

4th round OG

Now look at the future on offense 3 young RBacks....1 young Qb...2 young WR 5 young Oline

I found 5 kcikers who were 1st round picks.

2000...Sebastian Janikowski, Raiders

1984...Tony Zendejas, Commanders

1979...Russell Erxleben, Saints

1978...Steve Little, Cardinals (Paralyzed in a car accident early in his career. Had a 72 yard FG in college at Arkansas.)

1966...Charlie Gogolack, Commanders

1. 1st round, Ot

2. 2nd round, Wr (If we're going to pick one, I want him fairly high)

3. 3rd round, Og

4. 4th round, Fb

I think we need a free safety in free agency, and I wouldn't be opposed to either re-signing Price or finding a WR in free agency instead of drafting one, and moving that OG selection up to the 2nd round. We might be able to get the best OG in the draft, or at least top 3 if we're willing to use a 2nd rounder on one. We need some young, talented offensive lineman and that should be next years focus.

As far as linebacker, I just don't see that as a need right now. James/Nguyen/Shanle are very good in the middle, Ware/Burnett will start on the outside next year, with Fujita as depth. Maybe sign one in free agency for more depth, but that's not one my worries right now at all.

If kicker is such a need that you feel it's worth spending a first rounder on one, then just bring back Hoffman. He'll find a guy on the street that will perform better than any kicker in the draft.

I agree with most of you.... We need the BEST Free Agent FS and Kicker available..We need O-line depth and LB depth...One more Playmaker at WR...

That will just about do it!

Clearly, OL is the top priority at this distance. And that's good news, 'cause this draft ought to be stocked with fine linemen. It's a very deep OL class, could be as many as 8-10 OL taken in the 1st. We could possibly get one of the Texas linemen, Justin Blalock or Jon Scott in the first.

There are also some exciting linebackers in there, and this is Bill Parcells, kids. Crayton is our future number 2 at WR, but we won't get a stud next year, so let it be until the third, or (preferably) in free agency, where there are some good options available.

In the second round, though, keeping in mind we are dealing with Parcells, look for LB - someone young, aggressive, fierce. UCLA has a couple who should be there at the bottom of the second round. We should retain Fujita in free agency, but you can never have too many.

Look for WR and FS to be next. Don't forget, Keith Davis is a free agent, and Willie Pile is restricted. But if Beriault makes the team, someone will get cut, and itr won't be Roy Williams or the rook.

But this is a very deep draft, so we should get something good out of it regardless.

Other Dallas UFA's - Anthony Thomas, Peerless Price, Dan Campbell

Too many potentially great OTs to ignore all of them. Would love to see us draft a Left Tackle and move Flozell inside to Left Guard or over to Right Tackle. That would be a dominating OL.

D'Brickshaw Ferguson, Virginia
Eric Winston, Miami
Marcus McNeill, Auburn
Daryn Colledge, Toledo
Jonathan Scott, Texas
Andrew Whitworth, LSU
Joe Thomas, Wisconsin (Jr.)
Jake Long, Michigan (Jr.)
Winston Justice, USC
Levi Brown, Penn St. (Jr.)

Also need a stud OLB opposite Ware for this Defense to really explode. Someone like a Parys Harrelson (Tenn) or Kamerion Wimbley (FSU) in the 2nd round.

FS is still needed. PK somehow, somewhere. WR can wait a year.

I think I agree with you, but I don't think there are many of us. I want to see Glenn and Keyshawn stay healthy all year, Glenn because of his history, and Key because he's getting up there. I also want to see Crayton come back and be the same player, which I'm sure he will. And if all of those happen, I still want Price re-signed or another like him added in free agency.

I would try to put together a package of picks, and players if neccessary to trade up and get Matt Leinart if at all possible, or Phillip Rivers. He could sit behind Bledsoe for a year or two before taking over. If Henson suddenly starts living up to his emmense potential than I'd probably change my thought process, but we are building one heck of a team and need a great QB to complete our next dynasty. If no trade up, then I would like to try to trade down like we did with Buffallo to have two first rounders in 2007. We could address safety and O line with our 2006 second round picks(Michael Huff or Jason Allen?) and then be sitting pretty in 2007 when there will be some studs available like possibly Vince Young or Brady Quinn (if neccessary) or WR's Dwayne Jarrett(USC), Calvin Johnson(GT), Tedd Ginn Jr.(OSU) and maybe even Adrian Peterson.

Impossible to say what we shold do in the draft right now. Injuries between now and then and free agent signings will have a big effect on what we will need to do. Areas we need to upgrade one way or another are: OL, OL and OL.

Depends on who's available in FA:
1) FS, there are some very good ones in the draft but they are cheap to get in FA and having a vet still close to their prime is a nice level of comfort
2) OL, we definitely have to draft a OG and maybe an OT. Rivera and Allen are old. Peterman, is he good enough? If there is a can't miss OT sitting there when we draft in the first it'll at least be tempting but I really think that BP is commited to Pettiti. And LA will be back next year and is still relatively young. Meanwhile, Tucker has proven that he's a very adequate backup. So if we're commited to Pettiti at RT, we just gave Rivera a big bonus, LA is still good for another year or two, Flo comes back strong, the only position left is C. No C coming out this year impresses me save the U of Florida guy and he's undersized for the NFL right now. Obviously we need some help on the OL but where would we put a veteran? Either a Center or on the bench. I think drafting a young player or two is the answer here and where we need like we needed DL last offseason.
3) K, I don't think this will be a draft day fix
4) LB, We need someone who can play ILB. Shanle and James are playing pretty well but Dat may have found the beginning of the end. Unfortunately, there aren't many ILBs above 240 coming out in the draft. Brooks is by far the most exciting but he's kind of a thug and will probably be gone by pick 20. The Ohio St LBs....Hawk is an OLB and the others don't impress me with their athleticism. Abdul Hodge is good but seems a OLB also. LBs are usually cheap in FA anyway, relatively speaking. I'm sure there will be FA LB's available that are decent.
5) WR, big question is whether Price will be resigned or not. If he keeps current pace, he probably won't have a lot of options. If he's kept, then what would we do with a rookie WR? He'd be #5 on the depth chart. Love Santonio Holmes and Smith from USC and we might have a shot at them in the first, but it'd be two years before they got a shot probably.
6) QB, are we confident in our backups? Is Henson going to turn the corner? Is Romo legit?

I think we should have enough money next offseason to fix anything we feel we need to. Defense only needs a FS and maybe a LB. Offense needs a OL or two and anything else is gravy. K may be needed if Suisham isn't it.
I think if there isn't someone that is too good to pass up when we draft trading down for an extra first or second next year would be a good idea. I think the '07 draft will be stronger in the WR dept and Brady Quinn will probably be going there. Bledsoe has max 3-4 more good seasons left which would mean our replacement needed to be in place in either '07 or definitely by '08. Quinn is the best QB prospect I've seen in a few years and no other position is as valuable. Spending one entire draft on a franchise QB is probably justified with today's parity. Look what NE has done with a good defense and a great QB...its been enough. Anyway, trading down for extra picks in '07 is an idea I like because even if we don't decide we need to go after Quinn, we have hedged our bets and have the ammo if needed. Instead, maybe we get a great WR to replace Key or Glenn...

What positions would you focus on in the offseason to improve the club-

Of course draft position will play a role and lets assume we ll be drafting at 25 next year.

I would focus on olineman in the draft- our oline is average at best-

Great question. I'm going to go with my gut and then read what everyone else wrote:

O-Line: I think we need to address any/all positions on the line: can't have too much depth. Picking at #25, don't expect to get a blue-chip LT, so I'd take whatever value was there- maybe even the first guard.

Tight End: Parcells collects them and we need to prepare for Campbell's eventual departure. I don't want to pick one too high, but late first day pick of a big-school TE that is extraordinary in some facet of the position would be nice.

Wide Receiver: We're getting older, Crayton is part of our future but Price isn't; I have a lot of faith in our ability to find talent in any round. I personally like Wyoming WR Jovon Bouknight. Don't know where he projects yet, but he's got talent.

As for Free Agents, I expect us to spend money for a vet FS (turns out they ARE important after all), dig up a great kicker and would like to see Bill eat some crow and sign a stud long-snapper if he's going to continue to play this style of offense and preach about the importance of the kicking game.

OT wouldn't be bad, but I think we need to see how Petitti turns out. He might be a solid starter at RT for years.

You might get the best C in the draft at #25, but I'm not ready to ditch Johnson yet. And didn't someone say LeCharles Bentley was a C if we do decide we need to update from Al? I'd rather do that than trust a rookie, and a C wouldn't cost a fortune in FA.

Obviously we need a real FS, and a good one instead of JAG, but we can get that in the second round.

A big, playmaking LB might be a possibility because I don't know if Fujita is your longterm starter for a Superbowl team. Maybe even an ILB. Either way, you could get a GOOD player at that position even late in the first.

But I would still take an offensive player there. That's where I think we're going to fall short eventually. So I would go WR, or even a really athletic, quick TE. If you could get an Antonio Gates or Ben Watson or Randy McMichael type there, you could really create problems for defenses.

Indy will probably have to let Vanderjagt go. And I think we should be all over him. Perfect addition to our special teams.

I also say draft AND sign free safeties.

And concentrate on oline in the draft. I don't care if its on all 3 first day picks either at this point. Our oline needs to be set for the future. I think our defense is down pat, I'm ok with our receivers for the next years, and our running back chorus is amazing.

playmaking speed WR. speedy coverage FS/CB, OL. More than likely i'd go with Huff or Santonio Holmes/Martin Nance.
