We sure can't appoach our offense like New England or Indi does. Why ? Just because we have no Manning or Brady at QB. We have Romo and we have to appoach our offense the way it suites Romo's skills best (and of course the skills of our other offensive players too).
It isn't just about Romo. He isn't Manning or Brady in the manner in which he can audible effectively. He isn't as accurate and doesn't read coverages nearly as well. It is just as much the other players on offense as you alluded.

We don't have the WRs, OL nor the efficient systems that the Colts and Patriots have now and have had in place for years. Our WRs do not get open as consistently. Our OL does not handle the blitz nearly as effectively.

It is a "passing league". That is why you need a good QB to win. We have that. We don't have an elite QB, at least not in the Manning/Brady mold, where you can load up the offense on his shoulders. I don't think Garrett's system is executed well enough nor does he have it running as flawlessly as what you see out of the Patriots or Colts.

But when the majority of the best teams finish in the top ten rushing, that doesn't lend much to the "the running game is obsolete" theory.

The key to both Indy & NE's success on offense is their O-Line. Both Manning and Brady have a lot of time to throw and are not harassed every time they drop back to pass. Brady in particular seems to have all day to throw. The one team that did consistently penetrate NE's O-Line was the Giants in the SB 2 years ago and we all know how that turned out.

When you pressure Manning he isn't nearly as productive. We did that a few years ago and beat them because of it.

Romo rarely has much time to throw and when he does, some of his receivers are not where they should be. I think the inconsistency from the O-Line wrecks the timing of the passing game. Our inability to draft quality OLs is what has killed our chances of winning playoff games over the past 13 years.

I was hoping that with all 5 OLs healthy for the first time in a while we would begin to have some consistency in the pass-protection but it hasn't materialized. We were run-blocking well early in the season but even that has dwindled considerably lately. Now with Columbo out we may have a tough time producing on offense.

We'll see what Free has I guess but I would like to see Garrett call more planned rollouts for Romo to buy a little time.

the reason they are not sacked is blocking and the fact that they get rid of the ball--quick reads and timing--I hate the west coast offense but it works

They do get rid of the ball quickly some plays, but they do have a lot of time to throw on other plays; they have the respect of defenses; teams can't just tee off for quarters at a time - Brady and Manning have long histories of making defenses pay!

What did surprise me was how much both the Colts and the Patriots used play action despite not being thought of as big running teams - and how much success thay had with it.

I like this post and thread, despite some of the noise along the way. Good to see interesting points of view, especially those backed with both some data/analysis and passion.

I believe:

- a lot of the tops teams of their day are innovators, operating differently than the rest... building strengths in newly important areas before others

- the game has changed a lot from tradt'l run-to-setup-the-pass

- for better and worse (more better), our team/system is fundamentally a pass-to-setup-the-run team (even though attempts are made to hide it here and there, like earlier this season)... and we live and die by it... it's awfully pretty when it's working (especially felix breaking loose).... and when it's not, it's ugly

- Would be good to see more data on the main premise here though.. tough to lfocus on one game... especially when we're talking Brady, Manning... but on the other hand, maybe that's the point (sorry if that's too convoluted, but no time to make it clear right now at lunch)

Thanks all for the good stuff.

Let's go get some scalps this weekend.

I know a lot of these, but not some. Number 7 goes back to Teddy Roosevelt, so I'm thinking we all should know it, but only from the history books.

What is Dewey in Manilla? I can't even guess what that might be.

Maybe I just notice these things, but isn't it interesting in that almost every time someone chides the intelligence or notes the ignorance of others, (s)he tends to reveal his/her own ignorance?

Now tell me what a "tow" is? ;)

Admiral George Dewey who defeated the Spanish fleet in manilla as we started our long march to world domination.
It used to be a toast. Like if we split a bottle of Strawberry Hill, i say "To America!" and you say "Dewey in manilla!"
