Hopefully this is a debate that goes on for many years much like Emmitt vs Sanders. At this point edge goes to Gurley he is a punishing runner with also the quickness to take it to the house. Elliott is a very different runner, but his running style may lead to more productivity over a longer career.

This is how I feel.

Everyone loves to hype up the freak athletes and generational rushing talents. But at the end of the day, those guys wear down quicker.

No question Gurley is the better pure runner. But I just don't know if that matters. Give me the complete guy.

Was Gurley all that impressive last year? He really seemed to fall off after that San Fran game. I think he had one more impressive game after that against the Lions.

As much as I wanted Todd Gurley last year, Gurley didn't have nearly the track record that Elliott had in College.

I say that for a couple reasons.

Gurley's best year was his rookie year and he got progressively worse production as his college career went on, even if he was becoming a better player at the time. He just couldn't stay healthy and we saw that again last year in his pro rookie year.

Gurley was a 3 years starter, where Elliott was a two year starter and Elliott still came away with more yards and touchdowns.

Zeke just strikes me as far more consistent a player.

I wouldn't be surprised if Zeke has 10 games for 100+ yards rushing next year, where Gurley had 5 his rookie year.

As far as Elliott's Running style and staying away from injuries, I remember the one thing that Emmitt Smith done really well. You rarely ever seen Emmitt get hit hard. What injuries he had were being caught from behind. He just knew how to avoid the big hit. That helped in his longevity...

This year is the most excited I've been since...hell, maybe never. This could be very enjoyable.

Gurley only has the edge considering he has 1 NFL season under his resume.
They said Gurley missed 3 games and still had over 1000 yards. Well, McFadden didn't start until game 6 and still had over 1000 yards...LOL...
Emmitt missed the first 2 games in 93, then led the NFL in rushing. He also missed 2 or 3 games and part of another game in another year and was near the top, IIRC. Or it could have been that 93 season he missed another game later in the year.
I will need to look that one up.

This will be interesting to watch though. Not just the yards but the entire game of both. Running, receiving as well as blocking.

I like the Ladanian Tomlinson comparison.

How these guys are seen will also be a product of their offense's ability to get them chances. Elliott has the line to make big numbers happen, but a QB whose career is coming to a close. Gurley has a possible long-term QB to relieve some pressure, but currently their OL is trash.

So can the Cowboys find a good QB to ride along in the backfield during the bulk of Elliott's career? Can the Rams build an OL on the fly that can boost their stud RB and possible franchise QB? That's those franchises' biggest questions and will have a lot of impact on how the RBs are seen.
