Iloka versus Thomas

The salary cap has bogged down our poor teen. Prior to that, we were Kings of the world

They have the cap space to sign Iloka and by getting him, Seattle would control all the resources giving them more leverage in a trade for Thomas

They have far less cap space than we have.

Capped league. It's all about how you spend cap dollars.

And if you can get an elite player, that's probably the time to maybe spend some of that cap space you've worked so hard to create.

To me, the Thomas issue isn't what we have to pay him dollars.

It's what we would have to pay Seattle to get him.

Iloka won't cost much. They can easily fit him in their cap. According to OverTheCap, Seattle has $11.7MM in cap space and given the FS market, Iloka is probably looking at like 2-3MM.

They have 11.7 million in cap space and Dallas has 14.6 according to overthecap. They have plenty of space to sign him.

Seattle is also in a better spot next year cap wise. They have their QB locked up and 50+ in cap space. We may be considering extending Dak and re-signing Lawrence, which will be expensive.

Just wanted to add a little something. That 71.4 grade Iloka got last year was his highest to date.

'13- 64.6
'14- 69.4
'15- 69.6
'16- 68.0
'17- 71.4

Earl Thomas for comparison

'10- 56.0
'11- 80.8
12- 72.5
13- 88.2
14- 83.9
15- 85.1
16- 84.5

I dont like PFFs overall grades. Cant find DB stats from each year though.

Good additional data, if that’s accurate.

Thomas will also cost us draft capital. Iloka won’t. They aren’t really either/or players. We really could use both.

Have you seen how much we have free for next season? We have a lot more space.

That said, I’ve always had mixed feelings about signing Thomas at age 29.

Yeah, it's 50 million or so. I'm saying that if Dak has a good year, he will most likely get his extension next off season and the same with DLawrence being resigned. That's probably about 38 million in cap space for 2019. And that's being on the conservative side.

I think they like Woods better than Heath at FS.

Heath is not as good a FS as some of you are claiming him to be.

However one grades Heath, he's *better* at FS than SS. He's better keeping the play in front of him instead of down in the box. Good blitzer, but lacks lateral agility for run defense and coverage close to the LOS.

Apparently the coaching staff doesn't feel that way considering they moved him to SS.

Exactly. There was already a depth issue at safety, but with Woods out, an acquisition is now inevitable. I'd be shocked if Ikola isn't signed by the end of this week.

As for Earl Thomas, I feel like he'll eventually be a Cowboy but Seattle has to lower their asking price. The Cowboys just aren't going to give up high draft picks to acquire him.

It is not outside the realm of possibilities that both Ikola and ET are Cowboys by Week 1.

IIkola possibly, probably, Thomas highly doubtful. Seattle holds all the cards and aren't going to come down on their demands. Either Thomas reports and just pays his fine for not reporting when camp opens or he waits until week 8 to report and pays all the fines and loses all that weekly salary or he sits and 2018 doesn't count as an accrued year and is still under contract for 2019. Privately Seattle knows they are rebuilding and aren't going to the Super Bowl and see this as a teaching tool to teach other players they won't cave in on their demands and possibly won't have hold outs in the future.
The owners see the NFL as a business and they make business decisions.

I agree that in Thomas' case, the draft pick is a much bigger deal. I'd think about the overspend on Thomas, given that we're in a pretty good cap situation. But next year when we don't have to give up a pick.

Doesn't imply that at all.

Heath has been back and forth at FS/SS as the *team's* needs dictated. He keeps getting bumped by guys they like better at FS, then forced to play SS because he can.

Frazier didn't deliver. Woods isn't a SS. So it's up to Heath to play SS.

The simplest answer is usually the most likely.

Heath is a better SS than FS in Richard eyes.

Good chance they would have done the same thing without Richard. They've been doing it to Heath for years. It's still a bad call.

I suspect not. Richard has been given the leeway to put his stamp on the secondary. Hence Jones going back to CB. It was Marinelli who thought he could be a safety/hybrid player.

Richard is carving out defined roles and I have little doubt he sees Heath as a SS, not a FS. Again, FS is a primary role in this defense so I really doubt that they would take their best FS and move him to SS to accommodate what they feel is an inferior player in Woods at FS.

It makes zero sense.
