I don’t buy the idea of using our first two picks on line backers. We have only need one starter where as we could do with a starter at guard, safety and WR.
Why? Fix the linebacker positional group for the immediate future...I don’t buy the idea of using our first two picks on line backers. We have only need one starter where as we could do with a starter at guard, safety and WR.
Both of those linebackers can play multiple positions and can stay with a back/tight end out of the backfield. They have sets of wheels and can play the Dallas defense including pass defense. They both need to learn with Sean Lee, bit you tell me how long Lee will last or his salary just becomes too expensive, now.
Would have to disagree with you there.
Smith's biggest weakness is his ability to shed blocks and weed through the trash. If a team plays him in the middle that would be extremely foolish IMO.
For Jefferson, he just lacks instincts and awareness. I think he's best suited to run free in space as well and just see the ball get the ball.
There is a valid reason for him being projected in the second round of the draft...and no, he has pretty good instincts, but needs to join the ranks of the professionals...as does all 'rooks.'
Smith is going to the strong side...now what you are avoiding here, how long does Lee hold up on the off side?
I"ve seen 2nd, 3rd and 4th round projections for Jefferson. But go look up his scouting reports, it literally says "lacks instincts" in just about every one. For a LB, that's about a big a red flag as you can have for me. He's a better athlete than football player, and I'm sure some team will be dumb enough to draft him way ahead of where he should go just because he looks the part.
I have no idea how long Lee will hold up, but Smith's skill set was made to play the WILL...and if the team feels good about him he should be the heir. If they do not, then that's a whole different discussion.
Why waste a 2nd on Jefferson you can probably get him in the 3rd heck maybe 4th. He would make a play then do his best Casper the ghost impression. There is talent I really liked him coming out of high school but just never was consistent. Heck I still think highly of the kid just not in the 2nd.
I'm hoping Vea falls into our laps. We can get 2 down LBs later on.
Would have to disagree with you there.

That's a valid discussion. Only thing, I don't know if the team can be as successful at multiple opportunities for linebacker, that it had in the secondary last season...reasons for thoughts.Agree
I'd take edmunds or Evans
Of course if smith drops you almost have to take him because Lee is a crap shoot
Rds 2 and 3 can give us starters at safety and OL and DT so I'm not going LB again ESP since there is no LB in rd 2 that I like more than the players at other positions
There are a couple first-round worthy linebackers in this draft (Roquan Smith and Tremaine Edmunds), but they should be gone when the Cowboys are up.
The Cowboys need to fill other spots on this roster and should be patient. Show the world that there is no panic in big D despite the release of big D and find themselves a fundamentally sound WR on Day 2.

One of the persistent myths is that draft slots are significant. There is ample evidence (Unitas, Brady, Dak, Fredbeard, Hitchens) that draft value can't be narrowed down to 4/10 of a percent and placing too much faith that say, 27 is "too low" for a #19 pick is to fall into the myth of draft accuracy. I would be suspicious of anyone who claims accuracy better than half a round, and my rough estimates suggest it's more like 0.8 round.
D-
Aggressively over attacking is a tad different from bad instinct...use as many words and other's 'quotes not provided' as one wishes.
We'll just see where he goes...and by the way, Hatcher went in the 3rd and guess what his contract went for...NOW!
You are just quoting what some dumb team sports writers put out no way of knowing what the actual teams think. Heck the Cowboys have a group of them all are about as dumb as dirt and as worthless as tits on a bull. Go read BB’s top 50 list it’s a good laugh.I'll be your Huckleberry...
Let's see what Miami views are running:
After that there are a collection of linebackers — some of whom are inside, some who are outside, and some who could play both — who could go in the top three or four rounds. Among them, in no particular order,
are Rashaan Evans (Alabama), Josey Jewell (Iowa), Leighton Vander Esch (Boise State), Harold Landry (Boston College), Uchenna Nwosu (USC), Lorenzo Carter (Georgia), Darius Leonard (South Carolina State), Jerome Baker (Ohio State), Shaquem Griffin (UCF) and Malik Jefferson (Texas).
Whether Miami should draft two linebackers in the first four rounds is debatable. Considering it’s one of the most physical positions in football the additional quality depth might be a good idea. Regardless, Miami needs immediate help at linebacker and it could be acquired in the draft.

One of the first big moves the New York Giants made this offseason was to acquire linebacker Alec Ogletree from the Los Angeles Rams to add to their linebacking corps. Texas’ Malik Jefferson has quietly become one of the more well-regarded linebackers in the nation, and he brings the kind of athleticism of which the Giants could certainly stand to add. Could he be an option for the team?
Pros

- Highly athletic linebacker. Good foot speed and agility, and he moves well in all directions.
- Three-down linebacker, able to contribute in run support, pass coverage, and as a pass rusher.
- Versatile, able to play middle and outside linebacker, up on the line of scrimmage, and cover the slot.
- Looks comfortable dropping in to zone coverage
- Generally diagnoses run plays well, and is a reliable tackler.
- Good motor. Runs down plays from behind and doesn’t seem to throttle down.
Let's see what Green Bay thinks:
Malik Jefferson is a hard-hitting linebacker going into the 2018 NFL Draft. But would he be a good fit with this Green Bay Packers defense?
Malik Jefferson out of the University of Texas is one of the most intense and versatile players going into the draft, who the Green Bay Packers could also really benefit from.
Jefferson played at an elite level in college so there shouldn’t be any problem transitioning from college to major.
In his tenure with Texas Jefferson racked up 12 sacks, and played in 34 games. In his junior year (2017) he led the team in tackles (110), and also had 10 tackles for loss and four sacks.
Jefferson’s ability to make the play happen and put pressure on who ever has the ball either it be over the line of scrimmage or behind is something you don’t always see from everyday linebackers, the Packers should take advantage of this.

Wait, this is a trick and we all are just talking about Jerry Jones...right?

Just hop on google bud, plenty of reports out there on the kid saying the same thing I am.
I'd be a lot more willing to roll the dice on Jefferson in the 3rd, but would still have the same concerns.
Up front, I'll put a signature bet upon the fact that he won't be around for the 3rd round pick of Dallas. How about you?
He may not be, but that's not what I'm arguing. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he's taken before our 3rd pick or even in the 2nd round.
Again, teams overdraft on athleticism moreso than how good the actual player is.
