I'm Predicting Very Early Schoonmaker will be our Travis Kelce

Anything is possible, Kelce was a third round pick, but I would tap the brakes on a comparison to him. Dealing with plantar fasciitis is going to make it difficult for Schoonmaker his rookie year. If there’s one position the Cowboys have had a lot of luck drafting, it’s TEs. They’ve hit on some real good ones that were taken after the first round. Billy Joe Dupree was drafted in the fifth round. Doug Cosby was a third round pick and so was Jason Witten. Dalton Schultz was drafted in the fourth round. We picked up Jay Novacek in Plan B free agency, and he was a former sixth round pick. We’ll see how it plays out with a Schoonmaker.
IN order for Schoonmaker to be a good pick he would have had to come out of the gate and hit the ground running. Won the TE job out of TC and been consistently blocking well and catching 600-800 or more yards per year in the passing game.

Thats what you would expect out of a 2nd round pick TE. And considering he is already 25 years old, its make that scenario more important.

They also now have John Stephens an undrafted player that I am looking forward to seeing on Saturday.

Kelce is the TE that all TEs will be compared to. The comparisons are pretty ridiculous in every case, not just this one. 1400 yards and double digit TDs and headed to the hall of fame. He outdistanced himself from everyone.
He did, and it's certainly not a fair comparison, but at one point Kelce was a third-round pick with doubts that he would be near what he has become. Truth is, we don't know at this point if Schoonmaker is going to have a Hall of Fame career or be a bust or somewhere in between.

If someone had said back when Kelce was drafted that they predicted he would be the next Jason Witten (after all they were both drafted in the third round), it would have been considered a pretty ridiculous comparison.

The guy is very underrated. Big guy who can run. He can block and has heart.

ok great video 1st. he's exciting to watch. 2nd he's never going to be that open in NFL so not sure how he's going to be with defenders wrapped all over him consistently.

Are you guys ever going to realize that Schoonmaker is an elite athlete and the Schultz's, Ferguson's, Hendershot's & McKeon's are not elite athletes?
What characteristics make him elite? Ferguson and he appear to be the same size. So I’m guess speed and vertical?

I’m not disputing you (at all) just would like to know more about why he’s elite. Thanks

Sorry. I’m still higher on Ferguson and Hendershot—who I believe is underrated .

But I could be persuaded.

Doubt it and no one should expect that kind of production from a single person in this group. But the Cowboys do have 3 guys who can each potentially replace what Schultz did receiving wise.

If I could write Schoon down this year for good blocking, 50% of offensive snaps played and 250 yards receiving...I'd lock it down in a heartbeat.

Couple of decent catches vs Iowa and Indiana. It's due to his age (turns 25 this September) and lack of college production (600 yards in 5 years) mainly why people don't love the pick. We justified Terrence Newman's age bc he was a starter out of the gate.

Hoping he's legit and tested well though! We need these 2nd round picks to turn out.

He should be good right away as an inline blocker, but he needs a lot of development in the passing game.

You can say the same about a lot of hall of fame players. We’re still waiting on the next Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, Tom Brady. The numbers Kelce put up will be as difficult to match never mind exceed as the best of the best.

FFS the guy hasn't even had a real practice yet and he's Travis Kelce? Let's see if he is even our best TE first

Literally almost identical production as Sean McKeon in college.

If we get a productive TE out of him, great.

But I still think this was a need/panic pick.

Also, Schoonmaker calls into question how reliant one should be on these RSA scores to judge athleticism, etc. Schoonmaker has roughly the same score as Washington. Now, I wasn't a fan of Washington in the 1st because of his rawness but I dare anyone to watch both play and tell me Schoonmaker is a similar athlete to Washington.
