I'm Relieved

I'm not concerned about this game. It was obvious from the start that the Boys were not into it the way they should have been...it's pre-season after all. Romo was not sharp tonight being just a little off on several of his passes...even some that were caught. But the whole team was just a bit out of sync. Had this been a real game I think they could have gotten it together...but it wasn't. There was an obvious block in the back in the wide open on that returned punt and McBrier was out of position which is something that can be worked on...so not a big concern on that play. So all-in-all this game should serve as a wakeup call for the Cowboys and give the coaches some amunition to take to practice. The bottom line is that we have a better chance to be ready for the opener than had we dominated Houston.

Just reading the play by play by Clove and many of the other comments, but it appears to me we were VERY vanilla this game.

Case in point, on several of the drives by the Houston starters, there was no blitzing, the CBs were playing 8-10 yards off leading to easy completions on slants, we didn't really run any elaborate blitzing schemes, stunts, etc. We didn't make an attempt to make major adjustements during the course of the game on defense.

Which is what you'd expect during a pre-season game . . . .

And on offense, a lot of "basic" running plays, no reverses, trick plays, or anything like that. Again, what you'd expect in a pre-season game.

What did concern me, however, were the penalties on the OL during the 1st two drives and generally poor tackling. This can be sorted out before the Giants game, however.

It's also apparent that Flo and Colombo need additional reps to shake the rust off. Hopefully another week or two of practice and one more pre-season game will get them ready.

As for back-up CBs behind our top 3, unless JJ is able to pull off a trade or wants to give conditional low draft picks, I think we'll just have to make do.

Also, we need to check the waiver line for a PR, unless the coaching staff is going to be using Newman consistently.

With all the non-contact practices we've had, I knew this would happen at some point, but this is the time to get it straightened out. And our Punt coverage unit makes me nervous.. One more thing, what was up with Gramatica missing an extra point? Wow, I think the pressure of Folk may be getting to him.

It seems that Folk HAS to be leading the competition now.

We also need to get a punt returner. Urban is a goner, IMO, and unless we use Newman back there, we don't have anyone half way decent. Maybe we get lucky on the waiver wires. I though Stanbach was going to give it a shot?

I know that's going to sound funny to some people, but it's true. Things were looking too good. I needed something like this game to happen to make me think the players will come down from the clouds and be more prepared.

I never want to lose, but I really just don't care about the pre-season at all. Coaches will never play the pre-season the way I want to see it. Every kickoff would be onsides so the team could practice that. Go for 2 point conversions. No punting. No FGs.

No coach will ever do that, but I'd love it. Anything to basically erase the kickers.

I was starting to drink the Koolaid, and for an avowed cynic like me, that's not a good thing. So now, I feel like the coaching staff will know what they need to do to harp on to keep this team sharp.

There were things I liked tonight. In particular the play of Bradie James. There were things I hated. Turnovers and penalties in particular.

Two of our best starters did not play at all but will be ready when the Giants roll into town. Personally, I feel a little better now. I didn't want to think that the first game of the year would be the let down if these guys continued to look as sharp as they have. Now, they can't rest on their laurels. It's time to go back to work. I think they will do exactly that and show some pride.

Yeah, I'm relieved. I won't blame you at all if you don't share this feeling and are a bit concerned.

:hammer: Right on the money,Hos. Like I said all night, the only thing I wanted to do was put Reliant Stadium in the rear-view mirror with no injuries,or as very few as possible, and move on. There is just something about that third preseason game that scares hell outta me. Maybe it's knowing that the starters will play longer (dress rehearsal...Bah!!),or that the last preseason game coming up will hopefully see a lot of backups get needed playing time before a 10 day break till the Giants come calling. I think now Wade has something to hit'em upside the head with in practice. Now we see if he can coach!

I was happy with Thompson last year and Austin after Thompson got injured. Having Newman there is good on paper, but I'm a little leery of using him there considering how we look without him.

PR/KR/WR would not be of any concern today had we taken Santonio Holmes last year over Bobby Carpenter.

I'm kinda glad we couldn't get the game last night - we're in a fringe area for NBC and there was weather between us and the transmitter so we only got static. The radio was too staticky to listen to so I got some work done around the house. It's only pre-season anyway.

I agree completely. I said the same thing last year before the Vikings game when we were 3-0. This team needed to come back down to earth, and get focused and ready for the season. I think a loss will do just that.

I couldn't agree with you more. We will be just fine. This is just what the doctor ordered.

us houston fans, we would love to feel that way. But we have either school or work on monday.

Consider the rest of the year torturous murder.
Sometimes you just gotta give the Texans props for doing what they were supposed to do and/or taking advantage of what the 'boys didn't do. It's when you act all superior is when Texans want to rub it in your nose.

All I do is say "the Texans played a solid game" and leave it at that. What more do you need to say?

As for Hos' OP, I feel like you should never want to get too high or too low in the preseason. It's when the games count is when you should be concerned.

I agree with this. My reason for saying I'm relieved is that I just had this horrible feeling guys were getting comfortable and I wanted to see a wake up call.

I've been saying this all along that it would be nice to face a little adversity.

Im sorry for all you Houston Natives and the crap talk you'll have to listen to but like I said this will be good for us in the long run.

Everything was just to happy go lucky.

Im glad to see some questions being raised, some fans quickly doubting how good this team is, and everything else that comes with a pre-season loss.

Well Hos, I have been saying people, I just have this funny feeling about this season. But the first two games, seems like, it was just me.

But this game, it seemed like I have some validity to it. I kept saying to people, all the other years I was optimistic about season, they didn't live upto expectations. This year I am bit fatalistic, and seems like maybe they will do the opposite.

Then this game, pauses me to think, maybe my feeling about this season is right? I don't know, we shall see. Either way if the players were drinking too much Koolaid, this should be a definite wake up call. I hope thats the case.

Things were going too great after the two preseason games...we needed a game like this i think. I’m ready for the preseason to end and see what this team is made of.
