Important metric = sign new CB & S

Not for every player. Who is to say they even hit true FA? Not to mention we don't do that any more.

For most it does.

And a few of them will hit free agency. I don't expect Dallas to get involved with any of them except for maybe Hyde given their expected price tags.

But I am on board with bringing in a new FA CB and S. Time to change up the mix.

I think you have to sign at least one of the safeties and at least one of the CB's.

Personally, I'd resign Carr and Wilcox.
Then I'd only resign Mo if he didn't get much interest on the market.

We will draft a CB for sure, but we can't go into the offseason trying to replace our top 2 cover guys, and if you think Brown or Scandrick were better on the outside than Carr or Mo, you weren't paying attention.

Oh all we have to do is upgrade the entire starting secondary? I was told here on these forums just one year ago that corner and safety were not needs.

We need more playmaking from our corners, but our CB's have to be able to tackle.

2 major components to defense these days are tackling and being able to effectively switch up coverages from man to different zones. And you really can't play zone if you don't tackle well.

We need better play at the MIKE. The MIKE has become a more difficult position to play with so many responsibilities. And we need to improve the pass rush. The pass rush doesn't have to be dominant to be effective. If we can stop QB's from consistently being able to throw from the same point in the pocket and prevent them from randomly getting all day to throw and do enough to not allow them to get into rhythm, that can make for a stout defense.

I would take this on a one year deal

Sure if he plays on a Freeney deal.....even for DEN he didn't produce as a 10m player

Mo is the big signing on the D unless we get Berry.... Carr can come back for cheap depth, same with Wilcox but Mo is only starter coming back

FS needs to be upgraded thru draft or FA

I don't think we can feasibly rid ourselves of 4 secondary players and expect to come out better next year.

I also don't think we realistically have a shot at any of the CBs listed.

I'd love to have Gilmore, because I think he gives you best bang for your buck, but if I'm breaking the bank, I'd rather it be on a DL player.

I think the most predictive and important metric is real quarterback differential. According to BTB article on it below, we should not be resigning Church, Mo, Carr, Wilcox, but can and should upgrade. I could not agree more and have been clamoring for this for years. Even to the most untrained football eye, our DBs simply are not close enough to opposing WRs and make too few plays on the ball (compared to other teams, even those with comparable pass rushes). So... PLEASE STEPHEN & WILL do not resign Church, Mo, Carr, Wilcox. Replace Mo/Carr with AJ Bouye, Trumaine Johnson, or Stephon Gilmore AND a high draft pick. Replace Church/Wilcox with Tony Jefferson, John Cyprien, or Micah Hyde AND play Heath more. Then, draft DE in first round or two. And hope that D Law and T Craw are healthy. And Irving and Collins make jumps.

I cannot stand another year of Mo, Carr, Church, and Wilcox. Please spare me, Stephen & Will.

We play a lot of man-to-man and rarely blitz. Of course our DBs are going to make fewer plays on the ball than most.

And our lack of a pass rush was the biggest culprit.

Those stats are a product of the bend but don't break style we are playing because of inconsistent pressure up front. We allow the short pass, thus we give up a higher completion percentage.

Once again someone is number crunching without context. The secondary was by far the strength of this defense in 2016 by a wide margin.

Fix the passrush and watch the "improvement" in the secondary. Its decent...just need to hurry and knock the passer around a bit. Its not complicated.

Depends if Carr, Mo, Church, Wilcox all leave. Don't know who we can draft or sign as a free agent to replace those guys and keep us at a 'so' called decent level or better.

Agreed. Carr and Mo on the cheap makes some sense. Carr is average and can still contribute...Mo has the talent and would be a good rotational player...just not a reliable starter. The club can not lose them all.

Best thing that happened to the Cowboys in 2016 was obviously Dak and Zeke.

2nd-best (for Dallas and the NFC East): The fact that Eli continued to live off the juice of those two SB runs. Let's hope he keeps it up indefinitely.

Passer Rating Rank, 2016
Cowboys off 3rd / def 24th
Giants off 20th / def 2nd

Passer Rating since Giants' last SB
(min 1000 att)
1 Rodgers 103.2
2 Brees 99.7
3 PManning 99.6
4 Wilson 98.9
5 Romo 98.2

24 EManning 85.8

Hard to believe Eli will probably get in the HOF despite being 15 passer rating points behind his contemporaries. o_O

So just replace 3/4 of the starting secondary with free agents? Good plan, shouldn't be too expensive.

Carr and Wilcox and a draft pick. Mo can walk. Gets hurt too much. First 4 rounds. DE, DT, CB, WR

The secondary is the least of our defensive problems. But I will agree you may as well consider some FAs since you will have to go resign your own. Money will be spent either way. In the end it will come down to value.

Like many others I believe the emphasis has to be on the pass rush. Ive seen our talent leave too many times just to be successful elsewhere where the scheme and amount of qb pressure differs. Nobody thought Newman, Jenkins or Pacman had much left yet they all were productive post Dallas. We can win with the current secondary. But we need some monsters on the Dline.
