There's some decent Chinese if you know where to look, and there's absolutely fantastic Vietnamese food places everywhere in the D/FW area (D/FW was one of the target areas for Vietnamese refugees in the 70s/80s.)

Not as much in the Asian corridor of DFW.

Im guessing Richardson and Plano alone have 50 authentic Asian restaurants—Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese, Thai, Mongolian.
I make the short drive to there if I want the real deal. Its incredible.
When my friends visit from New York or LA, they are pretty shocked.

Great Asian grocery stores in the Richardson area as well.

It really wasn't Arkansas that I didn't like, it was me in Arkansas that I didn't like. And I brought some of that with me on my first move to New Orleans.

In the Beltline and Josey area of Carrollton, there are 3 great Pho restaurants, less than 300' from each other. My wife and I fell in love with Pho over 20 years ago and couldn't get enough of it. We went to a lot of trouble to try and do it ourselves but were never really happy with it.

Then I found this cookbook a couple of years ago by Andrea Nguyen, "The Pho Cookbook", she is considered the authority on Pho and this is a top 2 cookbook in my pretty extensive collection. I collect and read them because I like to read but have a retention problem with fiction so I read cookbooks. I'll bet I have 50 I've never cooked one thing out of but I got plans. Oh yeah, big plans.

You can go the full route or the short version in her cookbook and I can't tell the different so I do the Quick Pho and it is every bit as good as any I've had in a restaurant.

What's this got to do with ClappingCarrot moving to Texas? Glad you asked. He and his wife will need some cookbooks so I am just suggesting this one if they dig Pho like I do. I love getting Phocked up.

As much as I love NC, it doesn't exactly have a thriving food scene. We have good BBQ in rural areas and good seafood on the coast, but that's about it.

We do have an emergence of hip restaurants around the city though, so it's improving. A Dallas based taco joint just opened up in a trendy food hall in the arts district a few months ago and those were damn good.

I've been here 7 years - moved from New Jersey.
Love the BBQ....
Love the TEX-MEX.
Burgers in small places are great.
There are at least 12 chain chicken types here.
Golden Chick, Kentucky Fried, Express Chicken, Chick Filet, ect….

Texas is defficent in some food areas:
Pizza is mostly chain type.
Chinese food is not up to par with NYC area.

Love the no state tax... Sales tax is high but OK.

I'm up in Plano. Nice area. I was in Roanoke.

Growth area north of Dallas is about 25 to 30 miles.
Growth area north of Fort Worth is about 15 miles.

Texas BBQ is brisket or sausage, they don't do pork well. If they do seafood well, it will cost body parts because it is very overpriced. The Tex-Mex is good as is most of the Asian and fusion. Good steak joints.

Austin is the hip liberal city and second only to LA in food trucks and most of the ones I've been to are excellent. It is also the prettiest of the major metropolitan areas and second in technology only to Silicon Valley.

If I were to move back to the DFW area, I would definitely take Ft. Worth over Dallas. Dallas is the keeping up with the Joneses city of Texas and they take themselves too seriously. They really have no reason to be that large. Dallas is the largest city in the world without a port. They're such morons they tried to call the largest truck stop in the state a Super Port. The city council was too stupid to get the Cowboys stadium and tear that pos Cotton Bowl down.

Unfortunately, Austin is taking a sharp turn downward like San Francisco.
Worst city in Texas for homeless....needles, poop, etc. Crime going up, etc.
Sad, because they had a good thing going.
My daughter was looking at UT, but got so turned off by the mess there, she changed her tune. Oh well.

Great food trucks selection in Austin though
And yes, Ft Worth is pretty cool

You know when you open an over door at 400*? That’s what the Texas summer feels like when you open your door to go outside.

Drivers here SUCK. But the area here is always growing and many things to do. You have Dallas and Ft Worth to keep you busy. Your money goes farther here in, IMO.

I personally like the vibe of Austin and San Antonio better but in my field, DFW is for regional purposes. I visit SA and Austin a few times a year.

Drivers here didn't suck near as bad until over the past 30 years all the influx of out of state people increased massively...then it got worse..but it's still better than when I've had to drive near Boston.

Well, the term "road rage" was coined about DFW drivers by the insurance companies and the car insurance is among the highest in the country.

Using a vehicle as a threat of violence or actually carrying that out was the highest in Dallas of all the cities in America. Spokesperson for Allstate in Austin remarked that it was so much higher that it was alarming as to what could be causing this to escalate.

I have been shown a gun by the driver of a vehicle twice in my life, both in Dallas. Once on the NTT and once on Central Expressway. I could get quite pissed myself in traffic and a guy cut me off and made me slam on my brakes and I gave him the one finger wave. I didn't think anything about that until about 10 minutes later, he pulls up on the passenger side with his window down, shows me what looked like a Dirty Harry gun, smiled and rolled the window back up. That was the last time I ever flipped anyone off in a vehicle.

When I go to Dallas these days I can feel myself tightening as I approach on I-35 because of the aggressive driving and that was the major complaint I would hear from OK people when I commuted from there weekly. I cannot explain why Dallas is like that because I've never driven in any city that has that issue as bad as they do. They give defensive driving a new twist because it's not just the vehicle you have to be on guard about but what's driving it.

Those are recent numbers, I am talking about when the term first came into being, over 20 years ago. It was coined by an insurance executive in Austin because my wife pointed it out in the DMN, "oh, here's an article about you".

I haven't driven in those other cities in years but I would put Dallas up for aggressive driving awards my time there.

I agree that Austin has gotten worse and back before they created those extra lanes on I 35 by the stadium, going through Austin during rush hour was the worst driving experience in the state. Worse than crosstown Houston.

There is no way Austin could keep up with the explosive growth with their transportation. The locals still use I 35 as the local thoroughfare, just like they do in Denton. Loops don't interest most as they se the shortest distance between two points as I 35.

In the Eighties we were the only major city in Texas to turn down Federal Hwy money.
The actual repeated comment from the city council was "If we don't build roads, no one will move here"
Now we're the 11th largest city in the US; we don't even have a loop but we do have perpetual gridlock
Austin always stays true to it's motto: "keeping it weird"
