2009 4th round draft pick QB Stephen McGee of Texas A&M......."sniff".....I still remember you buddy.
I won't forget the vicious conspiracy that deprived you of your place in the Hall of Fame, an established American sports icon.............as well as my place..........a true football visionary, worshiped among all Cowboy forums as a revered prophet.
Never given a fair chance......still the NFL all time leader in passer rating for the final two minutes of regulation play.......Never once threw an INT in a regular season or postseason game......
Unbelievable, you say? The following is a saga of both triumph and betrayal.
His first action was in game #15 in 2010. Kitna got hurt at the beginning of the 3rd quarter and they put in McGee down by 11. He drove them down the field for 17 points. With 1:37 left in the game and down by 7, McGee completed a 34 yard TD pass to insure a tie and OT......well, not quite. Buehler missed the extra point. The Cowboys lost by a single point.
The very next week was McGee's 1st start in the league. This 4th round draft pick did something that the current starting former 4th round pick couldn't do. He won in his first start. However, it wasn't until 57 seconds left in the game and down 13-7, he completed a pass to Jason Witten for the victory against the playoff bound Eagle team......well, at least their backups.
That close last second victory against the rival Eagles, ushered in a new era......for Jason Garrett. The next season they made him permanent HC.
In their next season, 2011, McGee would be called into service again for a game #16 for a rematch with the Eagles. In this game McGee completed passes to 7 different receivers. He also ran 4 times for 27 yards. Unfortunately this was one yard shy of being the Cowboys leading rusher. By this time they were so beat up, their RB was previously retired, 34 year old Sammy Morris. The Cowboys lost 20-7 to the Eagles......well, their backups.
Still, McGee's record was 1-1, a winning percentage of 50%, the same as his HC, who was allowed to keep his job. The following training camp, in a move that shocked the world......mostly me......the Cowboys did the unthinkable....they cut Stephen McGee.
Apparently, Dallas Cowboy management lacked the vision to comprehend the devastating consequences of giving up on such a rare talent......as did the Houston Texans.......as well as at least one, I think two other NFL teams.......along with that Canadian team.....anyway!
I was aware of at least one conspiracy to undermine his success perpetuated by small minded Longhorn fans looking to retaliate for his two A&M victories over their team. But I'm not bitter.
And so, in honor of the memory of my "pet cat", his career shortened by a ruthless vendetta,........."snap".....this Keystone Light is for you......"gurgle".........."snap"..........as well as this one........"gurgle"........."snap"........might as well kill the 18 pack.........Has anyone seen my crack pipe?.............
