In regards to Henson

I have seen several posts and comments about how well Henson is playing, often followed by "but he is playing against scrubs" or something of the sort.

Although Henson is not playing against the best players in the world, here are a few things to consider:

1. He is not playing with the best players in the world as well. His teamates are also so-called scrubs, as some have called them. That really came to light this week with the four or five drops that were suffered in the game, three of which would have been first downs. Put Manning or Brady on that Reighn Fire exactly the way Henson was thrown in there, and I feel 100%confident that neither of them would be lighting it up any more than Henson, maybe even less. Especially Brady. Remember, against scrubs, but also, with scrubs.

2. A great pass is still a great pass. Wether it is thrown in Giants stadium, Berlin, or your local park. A great read is still a great read. A great checkdown is still a great checkdown. Henson cannot control his level of competition. All he can do is play well. He is doing that very well. A great pass is.........what it is........a great pass.

3. The competition is not as bad as you think. Though some call them scrubs, they are not really scrubs. Who do you think would win a game between Berlin and Texas Tech? Even though this is the minor leagues of the NFL, if you look at the players profile, most of them played at major college programs and a lot of them were top players at those programs. So, they may be the lower end NFL, but they are still amongst the lucky 25% of major college players who actually play at the next level. In other words, Henson is actually probably playing against better competition than, Leinart, Young, Cutler, or any college QB for that matter. Most of the players Vince Young lined up against will never play professional football, period. Don't lose sight of this.

Have any of you ever done anything against people that were really good at something and they kicked your butt at it?

Then you get interested in what they were kicking your butt in, so you play against people that your better than then one day you go challenge that 1st person who originally beat you and then all of a sudden your suddenly better?

Thats how I look at this Europe thing.

Remember too that he will have better talent surrounding him in the NFL.

No one doubted his (Henson's) athletic abilities, which is why the Cowboys traded for him.

They doubted his ability to grasp the mental aspect and the speed of the game, but that comes with experience. He's getting that.

And that's what the NFL Europe experience is all about. He's seeing live football action on a consistent basis for the first time since college.

If he can do well in Europe, he'll be able to take that next step because he already has the intangibles in terms of athletic ability.

I think he'll be fine and will be ready to start for the Cowboys in 2008.

It just seems that some people on this board have a vested interest in seeing Henson fail. I really don't understand why, but we all saw the same thing with Carter and Hutchinson. For one QB to succeed, then the other one must be destroyed. Doesn't make any since, but thats just the way it is.

I like Henson and I hope that he makes it, I also feel the same way about Romo. What it wrong with the Cowboys having two good QB's to pick from?

I think that both Henson and Romo have got alot going for them. And I hope that the Cowboys will have to make a very difficult decision between two very good QB's someday.

One of the things that has me concerned on Henson is his age.

He is already 26 and by the time 2008 comes around, he will be 28. So is he really the "future at QB" if he does start at some point? Even if he could play at a good level until age 35, thats only 7 years.

I like Henson and I also like Romo. I just want at least one of them to be ready to step up to the next level.

Yeah, but even at 28, his body will be reletively fresh from lack of contact. And I would be ecstatic w/ 7yrs. A lot of players don't stick around for that long.

I think thats why. Because people want to compare him to those 2 guys just because of the baseball thing.

The only thing is Henson is a Carson Palmer type talent.

Hutchinson and Carter weren't nearly as talented as this guy, but because of them Henson doesn't get the support he deserves because of that.

I hope he knocks off all that rust because if he does then we hit jackpot.

Romo is the same age as Henson. I think Romo is one month younger than Henson? Or is it other way round? Either way there are pretty much same age.

So if one of them emerges as Starting QB, they will be essentially of same age. I don't care if they start at 27-28, if they in their lifetime win one-two SBs, they will be tremendous success. Maybe they never end up in HOF like Aikman or Roger, but if they get one-two SBs for cowboys, they will be forever in Cowboys lore.

What will age matter then?

Wasn't Roger 28 when he started his NFL career...Or at least he was named the starter ?

You know, when Carter/Hutch were here, I used to often say, I wish we could find a guy with Carter's Mobility and Hutch's accuracy. And man, I think we have that in Henson.

If anyone remembers, Carter, although was mobile, he was the worst when throwing on the run. He actually threw better when he was in Pocket, even its not that much better. I remember somone broke Carter down few times, and showed a stat that he rolled to his right several times and thats where most of his Ints came from.

Anyway, what you see in Henson is, he has great ability to sense pressure and get away from it, and also very very effective so far throwing the ball on the run. I mean, I saw pretty much every game Henson played in College, and even I don't remember the kind of throws he has made in NFL E. He always brought excitement when he was on field, because he could run it, especially when Brady and him were sharing snaps, Henson's snaps would include lots of rollouts and bootlegs. There was always anticipation of some kind of big play either by run or throw when Henson was there. While Brady was the study consistant sollid QB.

He seems to be getting close to what he was in College. Especially his long throws seem to be getting back to where they used to be college. Thats where I am most happy about this whole NFLE thing. I thought he gotten really poor at throwing the Long ball, since he came back to Football.

I never had chance of seeing roger Play other than the highlight plays, since I wasn't US at that time, but I think he started at 29 or at least thats the age I keep hearing about him starting.

The talent in Europe is not as great as some of this thread would have you believe. Its under the level of, say, Texas VS USC. So In Baseball Terms its about AA. The very best of College Football is AAA, while the Pros are the major leagues. The speed/size,strength and quickness in Europe is a decided step down from the NFL. Tight passes that work in NFLE will be intercepted in the NFL because the D backs are that much quicker and faster. Remember: virtually everyone in Europe is someone that would be at best a bench warmer in the NFL. Just how many players go from the NFLE to STARTING in the NFL- only a handfull. Henson can excell at NFLE; now he has to prove that he can take that last step up. BUt if he keeps this up he certainly WILL get his shot in the NFL. Henson's biggest problem has always been that he only started in 8 games at the major college level- that is just too little too long ago. He needs this GAME time to really have a shot. Frankly this is what they should have done 2 years ago when we first got him.

It might help to begin by considering the Henson supporters' all out homerism with this guy. I made a simple comment last week after his second game that he didn't look good in *that* game and everyone in the thread jumped on me, saying mess like I don't know how to evaluate talent, etc. The Henson supporters are down right militant at times. Their homerism leads to name calling and vigorous debate that may make people look like they have a "vested interest" in seeing the guy fail when they're simply not homering out over the guy.

That said, I can't wait to see his performance from this week. Hopefully theebs will have it up tonight. It sounded at least that he made some very good throws in week 3. Week 2, however, was by no stretch of the imagination a good (or even solid) performance. His touch passes were bad. His short passes were bad. His long passes looked like me throwing the ball. He made 2-3 nice passes, but those were the exception and not the rule in that game.

Most players jump from AA to the majors. AAA is for the veterans who are good, but usually never good enough to make it.

Another thing people don't take in account is the NFLE players he is facing now is pretty close to level of the second and third sting talent he would be facing in the preseason.

in the last 4 years we've had 4 qb's. 7 years of 1 good qb sounds like heaven to me.

What gets me is at the start of camp for NFLE some were claiming how Chang would be the starter once that proved to be false the next knock was well Henson is not playing aginst anyone. Henson is doing what he has to do to make it in the NFL. The guy has all the physcial talents which is why NFL teams and scouts paid as much attention to him as they did and he was being regarder as a better prospect than players like Carr and Vick. No doubt Henson is having to make up for time lost in football but the guy is doing everything asked of him and has done so without complaint. None of us know what the future may be for Henson with the Cowboys but it is amazing to see so many around here knock this guy at every turn.

Well, then I guess you must downright hate Bledsoe's throwing, when he does those dump offs? I mean, those the ugliest short throws I have ever seen a QB make, when Bledsoe does them. Almost as if he hates the fact that he has to throw a short pass most of the time.

Anyway, I don't know where people are bashing when someone doesn't think he did great. I am sure there are one or two, who don't want to hear anything negative about Henson.

But I can see from your post now, how one can think you are being overly critical there. You sure seem to think, every pass has to be a perfect pass for you think Henson is doing any good out there, you may not mean it that way, but your post looks like thats what you expect. Now personally I could care less about every pass being perfect throw, as long as it gets there in time and is catchable most of the time. But maybe thats just me.

This post is very misleading. First, this thread is not about Bledsoe, so I will not discuss Bledsoe. It's strange that you assume I am a strong Bledsoe supporter. My criticisms of Henson in that game were accurate and you don't seem to deny this. In that thread I posted that he didn't have a good game. People replied with comments like "What are you talking about? He had a GREAT game," and "You must not be able to evaluate talent." In response to these posts I pointed out all the passes that were bad. They outnumbered the good passes. I never stated that every pass had to be perfect. Nice straw man. I do however claim that when the majority of passes are bad, he has a bad game.
