...I'm sorry if this has been discussed in another thread and I didn't see it, but as I've been reading the board I didn't see it mentioned.

There has been a lot of discussion about DeMarco and whether we should have taken the RB when we did. I happen to love the pick. I know the guy runs upright and needs to get better pad level, blah blah blah, but I've been wanting us for years to get more speed on offense and DeMarco brings that dimension to an offense. He can flat out fly (and he's been a highly productive) at the highest level of college football.

As for where we had him rated on our board, Jerry made an interesting comment late Friday night when he said, about DeMarco, that when we took him "he was the highest rated player on our board...(And then Jerry paused and threw this in for dramatic effect)...by a round".

I thought that was interesting.

Jerry says this stuff all the time. In fact, pretty much every time we take someone in round 2 you can bet on Jerry saying "we thought about trading back into the first to get him" or something like that.

I know he says things similar but usually what he says is accurate when he's talking about where we rated a player. He said something similar last year about Sean Lee and from everything I read it was true that we had him rated a first rounder.

This suggests to me that DeMarco was rated a 2nd round prospect on our board. That's the only point I was making.

Red ***** said he would be used as a flanker as well as a RB. He was known for his blocking at OU. I see a Reggie Bush type player, where they try to get him in space against a LB.

Yeah, he was like a mini-Reggie Bush his freshman year at OU.

And I'm pretty sure we had him as a second rounder.

I am totally willing to see what this kid can do before I put a boom or bust on the pick. That being said, all teams say crap like "we couldnt believe he was still there" blah blah blah

Top Ten things you'll never hear a GM say about their draft pick.

10. Yeah, he was a reach at that pick, but it really filled a need.
9. I don't really know what I was thinking about when I made THAT pick!
8. We probably could have traded back into the next round and still got him, but I didn't want to take that chance.
7. I personally think we got that pick in ON TIME....
6...

The best are yet to come... What would a GM never say?

6. I'm still glad we took Julius Jones over Steven Jackson.

Since he was drafted in the early part of the 3rd, we could have had a couple of 2nd rounders left on our board. In that case, he could have even been rated as the last 1st rounder on our board.

"I still would have made that Bahr... ahem, smack... uh... Bobbie Carpenter :blech:pick."

I thought that was interesting.

I thought that was the reasoning for taking Felix.

I hope this guy turns into a beast but what does it say about Felix?

I just don't know what to think about the pick. There's so many different opinions on where he fits. Mayock says a 3rd down protector and option out of the backfield and Goose said it only makes sense to take the guy if he's starting.

As far as what Jerry says, I'm not gonna look too much into it. Every other player on the board at that time was looked at as a 4th round prospect? I don't buy it.

They can claim all they want that they got 3 guys who they had rated as 1st round picks but that sounds a lot like having a screwed up rating more than anything.

No one on this board can say Murray is not better than Choice or Barber as a RB.

He runs, blocks, and catches better than Choice.

He runs and catches better than Barber.

Barber is gone and I think Choice is also. Garrett does not trust him. He automatically upgrades our RB's.

He will play a ton and put fear into defenses. Barber and Choice did not do that.

He was hurt a lot. He got two carries at the senior bowl. Thats why he fell.

Given how little they start rookies, I think that Mayock's assessment is much closer to reality than Goose's. Felix will start this season and if this kid is ready, he will see the field on passing downs. Choice is hosed.

I think that sometimes we get too wrapped up in the term "start."

I have no idea how good this kid is, but we should find out if we have a Training Camp / Preseason.

In any case, on opening day - first drive, if this kid is in on 3rd and 7 as our 3rd down specialist, then he is "starting."

I'm guessing that they have him pegged as a Reggie Bush/Charlie Garner/Brian Westbrook-type back.

Whether he takes that role to fruition, we can only hope at this point ...

.......Jerry says LOTS of things...my BS filter usually precludes me from listening to very much he spews though.

Sometimes I question the board our scouts put together.

The basis for success has been cemented, the physical talent is extreme for Murray, for Carter and Smith.

The transition to the next level should evolve naturally for the top of the Cowboys 2011 Draft class. All three picks will likely see time early and often, they are potential game changers.

You left Harris off that list. :)
