Interesting Julius Jones news

Again, YPC isn't the best measure of effectiveness.

Do you want a game with runs for 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 and 44 yards for a YPC of 5.4, or a game with runs of 4, 5, 4, 4, 5, 4, 4, 5, 4 and -4 yards for a YPC of 3.5?

LOL...what a bad example. YPC is a VERY effective measure for a runningback over a stretch of few games. Of course if you're going to look at just 11 carries it might not tell the whole story; but if you look at it over 100 carries, the truth will come out, just like any other statistical averaging. ;)

His brother took awhile to get it, but now his play is keeping a top ten pick on the bench

Thomas Jones' play isn't keeping Benson on the bench. Cedric Benson's play is keeping Benson on the bench.

That's not necessarily true. If you have 250 carries, one 80-yard run can boost your YPC from 3.8 to 4.2. If you have another running back who is identical on all but that one carry, they're 99.6 percent equal, but one has a YPC that's much higher.

Also, situational YPC is much more indicative than overall YPC. One year, Emmitt Smith had a higher YPC than Barry Sanders both outside the red zone AND inside the red zone. But Emmitt's overall YPC was lower because he had an inordinate number of red zone carries and Sanders had an extremely low number of red zone carries.

A statistic such as PSR, or even DVOA, gives a better measure of a running back's consistency because one long run doesn't skew the total average more than any other run.

Adam you're fighting a losing battle man. Just tell JJ that the Stop Drop & Roll is only for fire drills. There's no place for it in football. If the guy wasn't such an arm tackle conisseur this wouldn't even be an issue. I love JJ but I love MB3 even more.
