No one ever cares about pit bull owners, or even dog owners in general, until they are associated with bitings, attacks, dog fights, etc. Porn attacks one's moral values, but I have yet to hear or read where a porn star has bit the breast of a mail carrier off. The two can't be compared, imo.

It's a federal offense in all 50.

H.R. 137Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act of 2007As ordered reported by the House Committee on the Judiciary on February 7, 2007

H.R. 137 would make buying, selling, or transporting animals for participation in animal fighting ventures (defined as any event which involves a fight between at least two animals and is conducted for purposes of sport, wagering, or entertainment) a federal crime. The bill also would prohibit any person from using certain forms of communication in interstate commerce to promote an animal fighting venture. Because those prosecuted and convicted under this legislation could be subject to criminal fines, the government might collect additional fines if the bill is enacted.

President Bush Signs H.R. 137

On May 3, 2007, the President signed into law: H.R. 137, the "Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act of 2007," which increases penalties for crimes related to animal fighting ventures and prohibits interstate commerce in sharp objects intended to be attached to the leg of a bird for use in an animal fighting venture.

Sec. 49. Enforcement of animal fighting prohibitions
  • `Whoever violates subsection (a), (b), (c), or (e) of section 26 of the Animal Welfare Act shall be fined under this title, imprisoned for not more than 3 years, or both, for each violation

wow. you want to give the NAY's the benefit of doubt because we're not sure *why* they voted against it, but for the life of me unless there were other things attached to this bill that made them say no - why would *anyone* NOT vote to support this bill that simply prevents making animale fighting a "sport"?

maybe we've not advanced that far socially as we think.

Have you read some of the posters here...their opinions?

They seem to think that fighting dogs is cool...I mean, we watch football right? Where men that can rationalize will "tap out" if their injured. But, dogs, who cannot rationalize like a human, have to stay in the fight injured or not because there is nowhere to go...they are penned up until they either kill or be killed!

It's a real hoot of a sport...this dog fighting crap! Jusk ask around here...

I'm emailing several of the NAY voters.....we'll see if I get anything in return.

Dear Mr. Boren

I would appreciate some insight as to why you posted a NAY vote on HR 137- the bill to strengthen laws prohibiting animal fighting as sport.

Was it a case of something attached to the bill itself? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Dear Mr. Russell,

You are a dog.

Due to these circumstances, I feel that an explanation to you as to why I voted against a bill prohibiting dog fighting would not only be considered a conflict of intrest for you, but also a waste of time for me because, frankly, you cannot vote.

Don't call us, we'll call you.

Sincerely,
Senator Dan Bowen

Now, JR, you know full well that you should have included ALL nay votes. Texas and Oklahoma weren't the only states casting nay votes, since all nay votes are technically 'disturbing' in this case. Shame on you. ;)

My heart swelled with pride after seeing all seven Louisiana representatives vote aye--almost as much as seeing the Louisiana House vote 101-1 to ban cockfighting.

Yeah, yeah. Officially, Louisiana was the last state to ban cockfighting (some real special people live here).

Of course, you have to have a bad apple in every bunch. The lone dissenter, Elbert Guillory, said that he cast the only vote for cockfighting because he was standing up for all the people in St. Landry Parish who cockfight for a living (as if the same people can't earn ANY other type of living by raising chickens  ).

The important thing is that these kinds of nonsense 'sports' are finally being eradicated throughout the country.

this is from the "believe me or don't believe me" category - but a good friend of mine does a LOT of PR for several sports stars. 2 years ago he was working vick and his "possee". they talked about the house in virginia and how vick spent almost his entire off season there playing video games and staying out of trouble. they bragged heavily about it and vick is a type of recluse would didn't want to be around people, activity and so forth. from what i understand - at least at the time - cell phones didn't even work much out that way.

during the course of conversation, it was also told to my friend that vick had 50 dogs, mostly pitt bulls, if not all. at the time my friend didn't think much of it other than that's a lot of dogs. he himself got an american mastiff (HUGE dog) and later vick wanted one so he checked into it. the place where he got his said HELL NO due to the # of dogs vick already had, saying rich or not he can't care for them properly.

now about a year after all that *this* comes up. suddenly he NEVER spends time out there when a year ago it was THE ONLY PLACE he spent his off-season. it's this person, it's that -but not him.

then former team mates validate it and we worry more about the former teammate "ratting out" rather than if it's true.

last week i got a call from this same friend and guess who's back needing some positive PR?

mr vick himself, in a much more humble tone than a few years ago.

if you wanna buy his lies, up to you. i just know better. if you don't want to believe me, that's your choice also as i usually look with an open eye also when someone says "i know someone who knows".

we'll see where it goes but if you really feel that vick is "innocent" look again.

Mastiffs are very gentle dogs. Usually not very agressive at all. I could only imagine what Vick would want that dog for. It's sickening.

but a man is innocent until proven guilty.

No, he isn't. A guilty man is a guilty man. An innocent man is an innocent man. Period. There is no changing that.

Now, if you'd put "in the court of law" at the end of it I'd agree. Unfortunately the "court of law" doesn't always get it right.

But if Vick was involved, then he is guilty RIGHT NOW. The "court of law" is a totally different animal.

I've been guilty of speeding before, I admit it. I don't need a court of law to make that decision. I've done and even if a court of law decided I was innocent of it, it wouldn't change the FACT that I really am guilty of speeding.

Not saying this is the case with Vick, just nitpicking I guess. Guilty is guilty regardless of what the court says.

OJ Simpson can write a put right now entitled "How I murdered Nicole" and admit to murdering her, but he'd still be "Innocent" in the court of law. You can see my point.

Hostile;1500305 said:
Just a comment about "innocent until proven guilty." That promise does not stall the right to free speech and opinion. It is more an instruction for a jury so that an accused can have a fair trial. Nowhere does it say that those not on the jury can't form their own opinions or state their own feelings on a subject.

Jeffrey Dahmer was innocent until proven guilty despite the fact there were dead bodies in his apartment and a man accusing him of trying to kill him. From where I sit, Dahmer was guilty as sin and I didn't need a judge or jury to tell me otherwise.

We all do that. The problem is we too often let our personal feelings interfere. If we like a guy and see others "convicting" him (for lack of a better description) we will immediately jump to his defense and say he is "innocent until proven guilty." In truth, if he did it, no he isn't. Again, that is a principle for a jury to agree to, and decide. The rest of us have every right to our opinions on a matter, and from there the right to speak out minds.

Could you PM me that list? I have absolutely ZERO tolerance for Animal Cruelty or anyone that supports it. If my best friend told me he was betting on Dog fights I'd end all relations with thta person forever. Taking advantage of defenseless animals is sickening. All people that do it or support it deserve slow painful deaths as far as I'm concerned.
