I thought he was supposed to be adding size this offseason.

    This is from DC.com:

Not sure what his actual playing weight was last season, but I thought it was around 280. Maybe that was just what he was listed at. The way he played for the eight weeks he was available, though, I don't think he needs to be messing with his 2017 weight much. He gets skinnier, it could hurt his run defense. He gets fatter, it could slow his explosiveness.

I guess we'll see how it works out.

Thanks for that. I'd like for him to be around 300, but I'm not sure he's built to carry that weight. Around 290 is probably the most for his frame.

I thought he went up to 290 last year. 15-20 down from that? For a 3tech? I'm hating the sound of this.

Is it possible the coaches are telling him they want a 275 3tech? Or that they just have no hand in how players reshape their bodies. Either way, sounds like bad news for Cowboy Land.

I want him at whatever weight he played at in the Bucs and Packer games in 2016, he absolutely took those games over.

That doesn't sound like a player who is going to let any off the field drama have anything to do with his on the field performance.

Doesn't seem to be the case from what he's saying. If he's at 303 now and it's less than what he weighed last season, then he was heavier than I thought he could get. Of course, when you're 6-7, it's easier to disperse that weight and not look as bulky.

I don't know if 285 is a good target weight for him. I think it's a little light to hold up to the challenges inside, but his game is built on quickness so I can't fault a player for wanting to get lighter if he feels being over 300 hampered his best trait.

I was more concerned about this idea until speedkilz post that he is 303. I'd like to see him not get lower than 290, but I can't say that going to 285 is going to make him less effective. I would be concerned if he dropped to 275, but that doesn't seem to be in the plans.

Well, right now it's all talk. The facts are that he didn't show up at OTAs and that he was out of shape when he did show up and has had to work on his conditioning. I like Irving and hope he matures to the point where he can be our long-term 3-tech because I think he can be a tremendous asset as a pass rusher. However, he's got to show that he's committed to his job and his team before he can be trusted as a mainstay on the line and to receive more than the one-year tag he got this year.

Why? I don't think any of us can criticize how he and the team pursues his weight, and how it is bad for the team.
And the tweet said, 303 down to 285 is his goal. Not sure where you are getting 290 down to 275.

I will just wait and see how he looks before bumming on him or the team. I am sure they all are aware of this and have a goal.

Since he is used more for a pass rushing threat from the DT position, 285 to 290 may be about right. Jihad Ward is around 295. So agree, 285 to 290 is not much to be concerned about. Especially at this point in time. He could just say that is his goal, but when he starts losing the weight, he may feel 290 is better.

I don't think that has anything to do with his commitment. There were some extenuating circumstances in play there. I do not recall anyone questioning him before, so I will hold off on the criticism for now. Let's see what happens when camp starts.

Sort of off topic, wasn't La'roi Glover 6'2, 285 when he played for us?
Obviously big difference in height between the two, but Glover was a good "light" DT for us when the team around him sucked.

I'm not understanding these weight fluctuation decisions from many of these guys.

Irving needs to drop bad weight and get in condition, not 20 pounds less than where he played last year.

Crawford is losing weight to play more defensive end, when we have a glut of players there's and too few at defensive tackle?

And Gathers thinks he needs to add weight to 265 lbs in order to block?

Is anybody actually monitoring these guys?

If he stays around 285 to 290, I am ok with that. Ward is 295. Actually if both stay around 295, is ok. I still wish the drafted another DT though. Price is 318 though. Collins 308. Maybe they stay a little lighter with Irving and Ward to be a little more quick in pass rushing.
I do feel it is a huge mistake moving Crawford back to DE, though his weight says 290.

Gathers, not sure sure, I don't think he needs to add to much weight. Not sure how 265 is from where he was last year, but yes, who is monitoring this. And are they all on board, the players, coaches, trainers. I would think so. Could be just more dysfunctional issues under Garrett I guess.

I don't know what the past questions about him have been, but there's been a clear indication from the team that it has had questions about him, whether it's commitment related or character related, I'm not sure.

Yes, there were extenuating circumstances, but there are people who can't hold jobs because there are always extenuating circumstances. Showing up out of shape and not attending OTAs because of personal issues should not make us feel confident that Irving isn't one of those people. He's had issues going back to college that have affected his playing career.

At some point, you would hope that he's able to put those types of things behind them or at least separate them from his job performance, but we'll have to see if that happens or if he just wastes what he could become for our team.

I would hope that the team is involved in these decisions, but I don't know if that's the case. I know that the team puts incentives at times for players to meet certain weight goals, but I don't think any of the ones you mentioned fall into that category. It could be just a case of the team not being concerned as long as they are in good shape because the coaches don't feel the added or lost weight will be a detriment.
