Is a DL of Selvie-Melton-Donald-Allen possible?

I'm a bigger fan of Selvie-Jernigan-Melton-Allen. That's a good mix of stout run defense and good passing rushing.

I'm a bigger fan of Crawford Jernigan Melton Allen but your group could be better. Crawford's an unknown.

Really believe that the Boys will go BPA at #16 if they stay at #16. IF we sign Melton and/or Allen then it could change the thinking at #16 but not the BPA situation. Say Taylor Lewan OT Michigan is at #16, would bet that he is rated higher than Donald on the board and would be the BPA at that point so the Boys could take him as Free's eventual replacement (i.e. now or next year) or if someone like Miami really wanted him then Jerry could definitely get far more than the trade chart value for him. The key is what will happen in the next couple of days with Melton/Allen/Weeden.

Disagree.

If the coaches sees even 285lb Tyrone Crawford as a 1-tech, there's no reason they wouldn't play Melton and Donald together. They'd also be pretty stupid to not draft Donald based on the signing of Melton. That's like passing on Sammy Watkins because you signed Steve Smith.

We also almost played Ratliff and Hatcher next to each other, and it turns out Hatcher was more 3 than 1. Everything we've seen suggests the team has no problems playing two pass rushing DT's next to each other - for better or worse.

Crawford gained weight. He is closer to 300 lbs now.. In fact I think I saw somewhere that he was up to 310 at last years camp.

Except for the fact that, you know, they do. Heck, the couple draft boards that have been released support that notion.

Did they take Sherriff Floyd who was their 5th rated player according to their board? exactly

Yeah, you don't really know how BPA works, do you? You rank a board based on value, and if the value in no way correlates with need, you trade down. Floyd was not a good fit, but you still rank him to have an understanding about his value. It's not difficult.

I'm a fan of Selvie but Crawford is bigger so let them fight it out in camp and rotate. It's not like they won't get playing time.

I don't know what's so odd about having hope our 3rd round pick two years ago can beat out the street free agent we signed last year.

Selvie was a nice story for about half of last season. He faded down the stretch. I think he's a backup.

I hear he was close to 300, first I've heard of 310, but I did hear he was definitely putting time in at the weight room, so it's possible.

I agree with letting them duke it out in camp, just interesting that absent of that, he'd like to see Crawford start over Selvie is all.

Because I read that we are going to draft smarter with McClay. Things will change. You'll see.

Here's the thing, when they make their board, all teams will weight their rankings based on needs too. I mean do you think the Packers, Colts or Saints are going to draft a QB if he is the highest rated guy on their board right now?

What's it going to be then, eh?

Not all boards are not built with all players on them. Some are vertical boards with only the players that the team feels comfortable drafting.

You do not rank players on your board that do not fit. We have made that a practice, which is why Larry Warford was not on our board. The problem with Floyd is that there was horrible communication between the coaches and scouts. And that's not difficult either.

That's not the way it went down, there was clearly a split between the coaches and the scout in the room on that one. Broaddus has commented on this several times, you put a guy 5th on your board because you believe he's the 5th best player.

The fantasy is that there's such a thing as "Just take the BPA". There isn't a team in the league that drafts that way, it's always a balance of need vs talent.

Of course you put QBs on your board even if you aren't going to draft them. Heck, they were littered all over our board last year. Luck was our number 1 rated prospect in the 2012 draft.

exactly. If I sign a 27 year old 3tech, I am not looking to draft one in the 1st round and my board will reflect that. I'd still be OK taking an Easly in the 3rd.

I'd say they are all that way. While we're looking at a board with every draftable player on it, teams are looking at their own condensed board.
