There will be some hiccups no doubt Haze, but the pure fact that we're building the O-line which i'm sure everyone should be happy about is my hope to be happy! We could have easily taken a WR or something with our first pick

I’ve been amazed at how many times I’ve read lately on our forum that “our new OL is going to be better this year than last year.” I find that comment as fans hope rather than a statement of fact. Nothing wrong with hope at all. It’s just different than fact.

Lets take off the fan glasses for a moment and compare two new rookie players to the players they replaced along with our RB position compared to last year:
  • Tyler Guyton and Tyron Smith- I really like Guyton as our first round pick. His athleticism and size give him huge long term upside at the most important position on the OL. But will Guyton be better than Tyron Smith, both immediately and down the road? At best that remains to be seen. Smith was a 2nd team All Pro last year despite his decline due to injuries. He’s probably headed to Canton at some point. I’m going to tap the brakes on thinking Guyton is going to be instantly as good as Smith. Maybe eventually.

  • Cooper Bebee and Tyler Biadaz- Bebee is an underrated pick in my view and has instant “ plug and play” potential. Probably even more than Guyton. But he’s learning the center position this year and although Biadaz was not great, he was good. Bebee may have a learning curve to start the year at least.

  • The RB position - We are hoping the combination of Zeke Elliott, Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn are collectively better than Tony Pollard was last year. Objectively, that seems like a stretch of hope, not fact. Maybe we still have a RB move in the near future that will upgrade this position because I can’t realistically call this position as a strength.
Bottom line for me- I like the guys we drafted this year. Especially Guyton and Bebee. But expecting those two guys along with a diminished RB position to make our running game and offense immediately better is hope, but we can’t call it a fact yet. Right?

Hope is a good thing. I have it. But I don’t consider hope the same as fact.
My RB hope rests mostly in that Royce Freeman can make the team and provide some tough yards running. Or a rook, I guess.

I agree although Guyton has played LT in college. Bebee on the other hand has never played C.
But, he did play DT, so that means he disrupted the guy playing C, so that's just as good as playing C!!!!!!!! Practically the same thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My man it's in the middle all of it we can have expectations and hope versus reality but we've seen Tyler Smith as a rookie supposed to play left guard got thrown into the left tackle spot and he wasn't perfect but he handled it as a rookie and it wasn't even his spot and now he's an all pro at left guard.. The same with Tyler be honest what was he a third or fourth round pick came in and started his rookie year why can't these two dudes do the same thing they made struggle early they may be inconsistent but they will eventually find their rhythm throughout the year the coaches can find ways to cover up say the left tackle guyton if he's having problems you swing some chips and some tight ends on that side literally we've seen it before I mean to say they're rookies and we can't count on them it's ridiculous we just saw Tyler Smith was being questioned as a project and that he wasn't gonna be ready and that our front office was stupid for taking a number one offensive lineman and expect him to come in and play right away and yet it happened...

That's The funny thing I see the irony in having a fan base and even media who think they know things and they make these wild assumptions and predictions for everything in sports and really ....n and then we can judge it from there. I think we got enough depth all throughout the offensive line that if we need to have these camp battles come out that two different dudes are surprised like Hoffman playing center and someone else playing left tackle or moving Tyler Smith back out to left tackle they will find a way to make sure they have their best five out there...

On the running backs running back by committee has been done more so than having your number one or your top five backs in the leagues impacting to a point where they're taking their teams to a Super Bowl or winning Super Bowls it's truly the opposite I mean Kansas City Chiefs have been able to use a running back by committee leading with a seventh round running back and they've been doing just fine and people are worried about how we're gonna utilize these players well that's really gonna be up to the coaches and it's really gonna be up to the schemes and the execution by the offensive line but I think we have enough pieces that after training camp in preseason we will find the right combination and we'll be fine..

And guess what you you know it's not that difficult to make a trade for a running back or go pick one up after Week 2 from someone if it isn't working out I mean it doesn't have to be a blockbuster trade like amari Cooper like a number one we used in the middle of 2018 before the trade deadline but you could go get you a guy it's not that hard to integrate a running back into your offense easiest position on the team to do so..

Looks promising if everyone pans out but will probably end McCarthy’s Cowboys career early if it goes south.

I don’t think Guyton starts until around mid-season, and even that is probably dependent on the team not playing particularly well.

It’s not a knock, I just don’t think what they are asking him to do is all that simple, and Richards is way ahead of him.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Richards sticks long term at LT and Guyton ends up replacing Steele at some point.

If Richards can pull it off that’s not a bad scenario, as they can get out of that mess of a contract they couldn’t wait to give to Steele.

There you go Stevie…..throw big cash at the injured guys, but make your bonafide all pros wait as the price goes up. Nice plan.

Nobody knows how the rookies will perform in their first season. So EVERYTHING is just either hope or pessimism. Any evaluation of their past performances in college enables evaluating these guys in comparison to each other. But there are no guarantees how they will adapt to the NFL.

So in my opinion all statements about the future can not be facts. And that's why all off season talk is basically just a time killer for us fans. I'm not saying we shouldnt do it, I mean what else do we have to talk about? But facts have nothing to do with it.

So, my guesses:

LT: short term: slight to medium deterioration, long term: this position is secured, great draft pick
LG: short term: slight improvement, Smith has a year of experience on his belt now, he'll improve
C: short term: slight deterioration, Beebe will pick up the game fast, but no improvement in the first couple of games over Biadaz, great pick in the long run
RG: same as last year, or a slight deterioration, Martin isnt getting any younger. But still, everything's fine here
RT: slight improvement, Steele should be completely healthy now
Chemistry: Who knows? But this line is very young with Martin as the father figure, should be working out. Looking very much foward to it, can't wait to see them in action! And THAT's a fact lol. ;)

Overall: These guys need to gel, let them find their way in the first 8 games or so. Expecting good things in the second half of the season.

Edit: And even though I'd prefer a new QB under center, I do hope that Dak and this young o line will connect quickly. Some people are talking about 6 wins max, I'm still in the 10+ team. The core team is still intact and the defense will get a new design. If Dak can utilize his o line I'm not worried about making the play offs even though the first couple of games will be rough. What happens in January though will be a whole 'nother story of course! No hopes here on my part.

Good analysis. We can be hopeful and optimistic without treating our optimism as a foregone conclusion.

A good example of this is when a team drafts a QB early in the first round, are they “guaranteed” they have found the QB answer for their future? No one knows for sure until they play and have faced challenges and adversity. We as fans have to separate our excitement and optimism from reality until it actually happens. At least in my opinion.

It’s hope Bob. Though I think you already knew that.

Some of the most optimistic fans believe every first round pick is destined for greatness and that all the cowboys draft picks will impact the team
Positively and make a difference.

The reality is of course, far different.

The offensive line could be better. I am no fan of Biadasz and believe he held the OL back.

Buy expecting guyton to be better than Tyron smith in his first season…… that’s a very very tall order. And as good as I think Beebe will be, rookie struggles wouldn’t shock me.

No one’s better than Tyron Smith,,,,when he’s on the field so if Guyton stays healthy he can be better than Smith.

Beebe is much stronger than Biadaz so he should be better.

With the road graders on the offensive line, the run game should be better but I have the least confidence in this one.

I know (and every Dak "hater" knows) that trying someone new doesn't mean instant success. The risk with every new QB is extremely high. But right now I'd be willing to take that risk if the FO wanted to follow that path. But if he stays then of course I want that to work out.

This o line has the right demographic too you know. One old leader, two more experienced "newbies " and two rookies. That's a true hierarchy there. On paper it really does look pretty darn good. But that my friend is nothing but hope. :)

A lot lot of people ask me why an Eagles fan would come to this board. Some of them don’t really care about the answer, they would just rather see the backside of me lol, but the real reason is I enjoy football conversation and general debate. I have visited many boards over the years (decades now, really), and I usually find a few outstanding posters who I really appreciate and respect. I don’t decide whether or not to respect someone because of which team they root for (I understand some fans feel that’s the way it should be, especially with rivalries, but I find that is nothing more than false bravado). I look more for the critical thinking of posters.

I always stop to read your posts. They are always well thought out. This one, especially. This one is the theme of every off-season…and for just about every team. Not all, but most. I remember last off-season when the Eagles lost a lot of key players, and a lot of our fan base (myself included for the most part) felt that they would just easily overcome that. A lot of those key losses were on defense… not just players, but the defensive coordinator as well. It’s very easy to grasp on to hope. The NFL media machine has made it very easy to do that. But to answer your question, it is definitely way more hope than it is fact.

Not buying the hope (hype). The division will be better and the schedule more competitive. 9-8 is an optimistic outlook.

Thank you. You and I are proof you can still not like your rival team but respect and appreciate some thoughtful fans like you. I have a cousin who is an eagles fan, and we get along just fine - even with an occasional bout of smack talk from either of us.

Thanks for showing up here as an opponent supporter I respect!
