Is it time to bench McClain?

The sad thing is that he knows where to go, but just can't get there. On the OT game ending TD he is in underneath coverage and just can't get quite enough depth to get under the pass and it's just out of his reach. He is literally a step slow on almost everything and it's the difference between last year when he was making plays and this year.

I was watching NFL Network and Rapoport was talking about the injury to Sean Lee. He then mentioned that McClain came in and played will in his place. Shows you how much Rapoport knows about football. McClain played poorly and he is not Lee's replacement. He is a starter as well.

He was the one that injured Lee in the first place.

Hitchens gets beat on a 40 yd wheel route on the next play and Hitchens gets injured jumping over a prone McClain a couple of plays later when Mathews gets to outside for a TD.

He's looked absolutely awful this season. He looks slow, fat and poorly conditioned. Those big run plays given up in the 4th, he played a big part in. He couldn't accelerate and just kept getting caught in the muck. He looks like a 275 pound DE trying to play LB. I kept seeing lanes to accelerate through and thinking he could get there, but he never did.

Now health may not allow him to be completely benched at this point depending on Lee and Hitchens status, but whenever/if those two get healthy he needs to be in a reserve role.

YEA!!! BENCH HIS *** AND PUT IN ....

wait....

McClain has been awful. Church would be better at LB than what he's doing this season.

not saying he hasn't been. just saying it's not like we have a lot of healthy people left to just go benching people cause we're mad.

I'm not really mad at him. I've never expected much from him. He probably can't be benched if Lee and Hitchens are out this week, but he shouldn't have been starting before this week. If anything, I'm frustrated with the coaches for not benching him much earlier. He looks like a b/u and he should play that role going forward if or when Lee and Hitchens get healthy.

I think he actually gained too much muscle mass and thus body weight, he is not fat.

This will slow you down when endurance and mobility is what is needed in games.

Last year, he was much lighter and he even commented he put on more muscle mass, bad move!

This fact in addition to missing much of the off season (injury) and the first four games, explains some of issues but his mental game is suspect as well.

He's a couple buckets of chicken short of a 3-tech; maybe he'd be better off there......

Nah, he's not mean enough.

I was surprised the brain trust brought him back after his disappearing act at the end of last season. Just too unreliable IMO.

What is his contract terms/details. How much if a cap hit would we take if we cut him? Also while we're on the subject of the cap. If Lee retires this year, or is forced to retire, how much will that impact the cap. Same with Carr. I want to gut the defense but dont know the cap numbers.

Thanks

RMcClain is a FA next year. They may owe some cap space if he hits a few snaps percentages but only around 1m.

SLee is due 3m and has a cap hit of 5.8m. It would actually cost an extra 900k to cut him. He has 6.8m in dead money.

BCarr is due 9.1m and has a cap hit of 13.8m. They would save 6.4m if they cut him. He has 7.4m in dead money.

Yes, it's time to bench him.......but we may not have any healthy LB to do that. I think the D took a step back when he replaced Hitchens in the Lineup.

Sean Lee was playing quite a bit on the strong side Sunday night...and as soon as Lee went out Hitchins came in and got exposed. He's not a strong side LBers. Better suited for WLB. I'm curious to see the Damien Wilson kid. He was flying to the football in the preseason.:flagwave:
