Is Marinelli bringing back the 3-4 defense?

lol Melton is a great 3-tech but he looks terrible at the nose there.

If Brent comes back, my guess is that would be his assignment.

EDIT: Oops that's McClain. Ugh, that's not good. He should be way better at that.

I noticed Dallas lined up in a 3-4 defense early in the first quarter. Spencer, Carter, T.McClain, Wilber, T.Crawford, and Mincey all have experience in that scheme. Maybe Marinelli is working into the game plan?

He's working with what he has giving the offense different looks, looked good on that play.

Getting Brent back to play the nose will help even more with running 3-4 or 5-2 alignments. They have the personnel and familiarity with the running it so anything to confuse the opposing offense is a great idea.

Yes, they had some similar looks at other times this season. With Wilber at SLB and Spencer at DE it's easy to just bring Wilber up and have Spencer stand up with the other DL shifting around.

Even when everything else looks like a 4-3, Spencer sometimes stands up.

They started doing more pre-snap shifting of the DLine the past game or two. It didn't notice them shifting around much pre-snap earlier in the season.

I think this defense would be great if we were allowed to play with 3-4 more players. ;)

Brent would fit right in if we continue with that look.

I've noticed what you're referring to with Wilber/Spencer but that's different. Here's Spencer as a stand up pass rusher like you said:

DTs are both playing the outside shoulder of the guards.

Which is different from what I'm talking about in this thread:

NT over the center.

Which is essentially the same look when we were a 3-4 team in 2012:

Mincey got gashed. Pushed down field 5 yards.

T.Crawford DE, Brent NT, T.McClain DE would be a better front if Marinelli continues with it.

Mincey didn't get driven 5 yards downfield. BF has an agenda against Mincey.

Mincey drew a double team which kept the LBs clean.

BF has an agenda on the defense as a whole, he sees no improvement at all with them. lol

Since we are talking about Marinelli, am i the only one that hates when he drops a lineman into coverage? It seems they always complete a pass when he does it.

I think he does it with Mincey a lot. I think it's interesting. It isn't incredibly effective thus far, but it could be in the future.

Not really it is called a zone blitz and every team will do it.

That's what you seriously saw? He clearly got blown down the field 5 yards, double team or not. I'm sure Marinelli wasn't pleased with it. They gave up 5 yards on that play. Mincey is still JAG.

That's not true. They are better than last year. But that wouldn't have taken much. I still think they are a below average defense that gets a lot of help from not being on the field as much as last year. IE the offense running the ball.

And I think that when/if we make it to the playoffs, playoff caliber offenses will shred us.

Mincey got pushed, but he held well enough to keep the tackle from peeiling off and getting hitchens, which is the entire purpose of the play. Hitchens made a great read and resisted the temptation to hit the B gap, but Mincey held the point well enough that the tackle couldn't peel off and block mincey, which would have led to a HUGE gain.

Mincey isn't amazing, but he's slighly better than a JAG. He would be a very good backup.

It's a typical 50 or okie front. It can be with 3 lineman or 4 but it doesn't really make it 3-4. The difference these days between 3-4 and 4-3 is very miniscule.
That is a 3-4 front, no matter if there's another name for it or not.

What defense does not get help by their team winning TOP, SF defense gets a lot of help as well. Colts lead the NFL in TOP I would think that too helps their defense. There are some things Dallas needs to continue to improve on in defense no secret there there are also something like being 5th in the NFL in Ints that have worked out well for the defense, guys stepping up in key moments to make big stops.

NO is the 3rd ranked passing team, Beat them, Seahawks 10th rated offense beat them. Philly will be a good test as they sport the 5th ranked offense.
