IF Romo can put together three more years of this kind of performance then of course he belongs in the HOF. If Warren Moon can be put in then certainly Tony deserves it.

Didn't Warren also win some Grey cups in Canada? The football HOF includes Canadian players too. Having said that, Warren was obviously great in the NFL too, even though he arrived late.

I always look at Warren Moon as a special case. His stats and playoff record don't warrant HOF entry. however, he was excluded from playing QB in the NFL because of his color for the first 6 years of his career.

I don't think people understand just how good Marino was. He changed the game. No one came even close to his stats. The only comparison I can make here is if Peyton Manning never won a superbowl. That would make Peyton this generation's Marino. Marino was that kind of crazy good (statistically) for his era.

I think if he gets to a Super Bowl, he has a better chance of getting into the Hall of Fame.
If he wins it, he's in.
If he doesn't get there, there's no way he gets into the Hall of Fame.

I just finished listening to Mike and Mike, and they were saying if it was Romo and not Eli committing that last minute blunder, we wouldn't have heard the end of it. Super Bowl rings buys a certain amount of grace.

They also said that Romo is the most "overly criticized" quarterback in the history of the game.

Unfortunately, unless Romo gets to a Super Bowl and/or wins it, it's extremely unlikely he gets into the Hall of Fame.

Marino broken the all time Touchdown passes record by 41% !

The equivalent if it happened today would be someone throwing for 79 TDs (41% more than Manning's 55 in 2013).

He was the first one to break the 5000 yard mark. It took someone 23 years (Brees 2008) to do it again.

All this was before all the rules changes opening the passing game.

Truth be told, I think Moon is in because he's a successful black quarterback (BTW, I'm black). I think his legacy and hardship in becoming a NFL quarterback then leaving to hone his craft in the CFL before returning to the NFL is what contributed/contributes to his fame. If Moon were white, I don't think he'd be in the Hall of Fame.
I'm not trying to make this a race issue. But, then again, that factors into the history of the NFL, particularly as it relates to quarterbacks.

to me Romo has had two different careers. The first looked skittish and would short circuit at really bad times but also would look prolific. The second half of his career is player who manages the game without big drop-off in ability. I didn't follow Marina or Elway career close enough to know if they had his problems for first half of their careers.

Marino took advantage of the first loosening of the rules that started in 1978. But it is telling just how much he blew the current records away. That I think made an impression that lasted.

would not quite go that far but does parallel somewhat to when Ruth came in and started punching the dead ball at the time out of baseball parks. Ruth DOUBLED and TRIPLED the records and even more. Which by percentage was immensely more than what Marino did.

This is how I viewed it. Warren Moon basically was afforded something no other player ever was -- credit for his play and performance in the CFL where he was amazing.

He spent 6 years in the NFL not because he wanted to but because had to (more or less).

Tell you what just has to blow you away about this thread. We are at the point where a legitimate and really well thought out question included the names Marino, Elway and Romo.

Two of those three were prodigy's, once in a generation talents who blew us away with grainy high school reels, college heroics, Heisman talk and NFL greatness.

One of those was an undrafted kid from Eastern Illinois who was brought to the combine to throw to future first round draft picks then a week later was to head to Wisconsin to be a club pro at a local golf course for the rest of his life -- then Sean Payton saw something and his life changed forever.

But more than Tony's talent, his grace and humility under what I consider to be the most obsessive and brutal criticisms ever leveled at a professional athlete in the highest profile position in sports is why I respect him so much. Remember that great story when he stopped on the freeway late at night and changed that elderly couple's tire on the side of the road.

There is no doubt in my mind he'd pull over and to it again tomorrow.
