Is Shemar James an option to start at MLBer?

He'll only be 22 years old on opening day, so he definitely has room to grow. And the book on him coming out of Florida was that he'd need at least a season to grow.

But I don't think you can project anything positive about him based on his tape from last season... it was bad all the way around.

Forgot about James. Happens.

So, please correct me if Im wrong, which is somewhere between possible and likely….

The inside LBs in this scheme are going to be Winters, Overshown, James and Barham.

It’s not exactly the greatest room in the league but what’s really wrong with it? Don’t we want to see what these guys can do within this scheme, or keep trading high draft picks for names that you’ve heard of?

I mean we have to see what we have in him before there's a dire need, then we'll get desperate and will make a trade

If that name was Jordyn Brooks I'd probably do it, but I see your point.

Starting?
Doubtful.
We are going to be rocking Winters and Overshown as the starters, injuries aside.
Will he be possibly subbed in more or more packages? Sure.

Maybe in certain 4-3 looks. But he's not going to be starting in nickel packages.

That said, he probably would be the next guy if one of Overshown or Winters gets hurt. He'll look a lot better playing next to other competent players, I think.

He played well for a rookie but having said that Jaylon Smith led us in tackles as well 15 yards down the field……

He wasn't good last year, but he had many things working against him. Bad scheme, bad talent around him, inexperience.

This year he should have a better scheme, better talent around him and more experience. He should only improve. To what extent remains to be seen. I'd love for him to turn into a starter, but wouldn't want to rely on it.

He's been getting reps so he's an option but I think he's the 3rd option right now. I would give Overshown & Barham the nod over him currently. Barham might just be the early down Mike with Overshown the nickel guy.

Everyone on this defense that was there last year is a wait and see for me

He was not good last year. If you’re depending on him to start, you’ve got problems on defense.

I’d consider him Option #4 at inside linebacker right now.

I think Overshown and Winters are the projected starters, with Barham at #3.

I haven’t heard much mention of James - good or bad so far.

But there’s a lot of time before the season starts, so he may hate opportunity to move up the list.
