If you are looking at his 40 time, you are looking at the wrong combine event to determine speed for a defensive lineman. In all other events, he is on par with elite RDE's. That said, I do think there has been a slight shift in Marinelli's system. If he had his druthers, I suspect he would prefer the bigger RDE with speed, power and length to help get to the QB and not be a liability against the run, which is what Taco will eventually be. I also think he likesthe flexibility to move a player around on the line. That said, RDE is the first position Marinelli had him in mind for.

I don't know about a liability against the run. Maybe on a stretch play? He is big enough to hold the point of attack on a running play. He may not have the speed to prevent them turning the corner on him though.

Rod inherited Ware. If he had his choice he probably would have preferred a bigger player that could go up against 300 pound tackles every play. Ware started to break down and had to play through a lot of injuries when they asked him to do that. At Denver he got to go back to being a 3-4 OLB.

Honestly, I have no idea what to expect from him in his first year. But if we are comparing him to say Randall Gregory as a RDE, (to say nothing of Gregory's off-the-field issues), I believe Taco would be less of a liability in obvious running downs, meaning he is not just a pass rushing specialist. He is a 3 down player. That said, he has alot to learn. It may be a few years before we see the wisdom of this pick come to fruition.

In my opinion Lawrence is toast after this year and Gregory will never play for the Cowboys again.

We have a hole a LDE. I agree. I think he is the perfect LDE. Without that quick twitch speed, he is primed for the left side where you need a guy good at stopping the run also. I think he has a better shot to be a very good LDE and more of an average RDE. Which we have plenty of.
I think you have your DE's confused; not sure which part. But Taco is slotted for RDE and has the explosion and bend to be very good at it...eventually.

I know he is slotted to be the RDE, I just dont see him having great success there. I think he is the prototype LDE. He is NOT the war daddy pass rushing machine that we need on the left side. AT least not from what I have seen.

Silliness. Demarcus Ware wasn't on the board at 28. If he was, would we go Ware or Taco?

We took Taco to play RDE for now. The Boise bust will leave in free agency. We either hit on Tapper and Taco will move to LDE or we draft another RDE next year.

Not a change in philosophy, but you can't draft what isn't there.

You might be right...but if you look beyond his 40, take in consideration the high ankle sprain he played through in his first year of significant starts, and his length, which can create the illusion that he is slow, you might be pleasantly surprised at his speed for his size. I'm not proclaiming him a war daddy, but he very well could become one. Think Greg Hardy, without the baggage... eventually...possibly.

I do not expect D. Ware to have a huge impact on these young guy's technique. Ware made OL SCARED he's take an inside path to the QB, only to go outside untouched. He was a natural. I could see him telling Taco "Umm, run faster around the edge this time" :) I hope he can help!

Ware was good with his hands. Hand technique and placement is pretty important for a pass rusher at the NFL level. That's just one example of how he could potentially help.

If ware had been there at 28 they would have taken him
They took the best of what was there

Joey Bosa ran a 4.86 40 dash.
Taco and D Ware are not at all the same type of player, Ware was an OLB converted to DE who still dropped into coverage and played plenty as a 3-4 OLB.

The QB is 3-7 yards beyond the LOS. 40 times don't mean much..
Ware was a pure DE in college.

I'm sick of hearing about DE DWare; his greatest years and the reason he's going to the hall of fame is because he was an OLB in the 3-4. When we changed to the 4-3, he was not an elite DE....period.

Michael Bennett is the prototype 4-3 DE; he ran a 4.79 forty.

I believe C.Haley has already been helping out with our DE's the last few years...........I remeber specifically him working with R.Gregory...............for some reason, no offense to D.Ware, I think Haley has more to offer a 4-3DE from the standpoint that's what he was his entire career.-------Haley could bring it at another level than what D.Ware could.

I read that no passer rusher in the nation got to the QB more regularly than Taco on sacks of 2.5 seconds or less.
HE IS QUICK in short space situations--which is what he does.
That's outstanding.
