Is the glass half empty or half full?

Let's be honest here and not sugar coat it.

No matter what he says you have already made up your mind on what is going on.

Most of us have.

Not giving up hope that the plan is just unfolding in a weird way.

Spot on. The free agency period cannot be like the 2009 special teams draft where depth is the flavor.

Going into a draft desperate at one position is never smart. It makes it worse when that particular draft is not especially strong in what you need (i.e. pass rushers).

Once you get past Clowney and Mack who will be long gone, there is a bunch of fluff. Kony Ealy? Dee Ford? Scott Crichton? Trent Murphy? Marcus Smith? Kareem Martin? Chris Smith? Demarcus Lawrence? Michael Sam?

Anyone willing to bet any of these are sure things capable of stepping right in and producing? Do you want to have to draft one of them?

Chances are we will have to force it at DE, but it does not have to be that way inside.

Considering we just did the same thing last year with Frederick would only strengthen the belief they'd do it again. They reached on Frederick. He was "the last of the mohicans". Even as a big supporter of him, I can admit it was a little bit of a reach. To some, it was a gigantic reach. But it worked out that time. You go back to that well again and chances are it won't.

I just want the team to draft pure in May. I think most would agree we'll have a new head coach and direction very soon. Those players we take in May will be a part of it. Going into the 2014 season still with serious DL issues isn't the worst scenario if it means you found better value elsewhere in the draft. I'm okay with that. We can try to strengthen it again next year. To the people who think we can win this year it's probably unacceptable. I don't, so I'm okay with it.

An example and this is just my opinion. I don't see any realistic scenario where if C.J. Mosley is still on the board at 16 that he's not the BPA. He does not help fix the DL at all but he would be the best prospect on the board in my view. Take that guy. Don't get tunnel vision on defensive linemen. Mosley can be a big time player here for 10 years.

I would honestly love to have open options in every round. Adding a starting DL in free agency changes that. If not, it is a set up for disaster.

Oops, Aaron Donald just went. Okay, we will get Easley later on because he's injured. Dagnabbit, taken right in front of us. Alright, Lawrence can help the pass rush. Missed! How does this keep happening, Stephen?

Unfortunately it is half empty and sinking. I have low expectations this year, I hope I am proven wrong but cant go wrong having low expectations, right?

That's the thing... The whole glass half full, half empty question.

Conventional wisdom:
If you answer half empty then you are a pessimist
If you answer half full then you are an optimist

But in reality, glass half empty and emptying further is never a good thing. Glass half full and filling up, much better. We have the former not the latter.

When we had the other guys as coaches the glass was half but it was draining out, now since Garrett has taken the reins, the drip has been picking up pace and the glass is half full, on it's way to becoming full. Our defense only has one way to go and that is up, but it will be better than anyone is expecting except me

Dude, there is a crack in the glass and its leaking

The reality of the situation is we successfully pissed away the best rosters we have had since the mid 90's on piss poor coaches like Wade "Powder Puff" Phillips and Jerry's Red Headed Trainee. Jerry is apparently keeping his pet coaching project for the future and our roster is not what it was so the future is not very rosy. What a waste of talent losing out on the prime of players like Romo, Ware, Witten, etc...... The worst part is that Jerry and his project Garrett are the ones making the decisions for the future.:(

This thought is so good, you should make it into a thread all its own.

I'm on half empty and here is what I've been thinking the last few days. I'm a fan of many things Cowboys and even stick up for Romo from time to time. However, I am not a fan of Red. Wasted talent, playoff seasons, etc. Guy is a coordinator, at best. But Jerry's end of season comments....that Red was in training, making mistakes and they need t get something after all of that... got me thinking..is he going to keep Garrett no matter what because he knows we are rebuilding? Think about, its hard to sell SB with that D-line. Even with a coach that is known for developing them in Marinelli. If we are cutting old contracts and trying to start over with cheaper alternatives and hopefully the draft...that is rebuilding. It scares me because I think Red will never be a good coach, even if he has one lucky season. But I think Jerry will ride him as long as we are shuffling coordinators and rosters. Built in excuses yearly. I hope that a weird, young group, converges and we make a run but the last two years seemed time for that...not now.

So you can move it to the rant zone again????

Lol! I didn't actually move it to the rant zone.

I would have, though. I was reading it through first because I thought we'd likely get some dust-ups from a transparent call-out thread that intentionally misrepresented the arguments of the posters you seem to disagree with, and by the time I got to the bottom of it, another mod had done what should have been done and moved it where it belonged.

I just thought this post reminded me so much of that one that I'd point it out.

He's right. The team turned around with Parcells in that structure. It turned back when Parcells left and your lunatic owner decided he was large and in charge again.

It's quite sickening when you think about it.

You may be half-empty right now, Houston, but you keep your negativity in context, at least. I appreciate it when pessimism pretty much stays where it belongs and doesn't bleed into everything the club does. You also tend to tackle arguments rather than mischaracterizing them and then attaching the mischaracterizations.

To your point...and we'd obviously feel very differently about this if it were to happen...but if the Cowboys somehow started out well next season--say, 3-1 with a couple back to back wins in weeks three and four--I can totally see Jerry using the opportunity to announce a small extension for Jason Garrett. He's definitely already been given a reasonable amount of rope, but I do think Jerry really likes him as head coach and that they think they're building things. It would not shock me at all to see them extend him a bit at a point where the fan overreaction would be minimized.

And you should totally find a way to work this in to some of the other threads we've got open right now. It's a refreshing take, and you can apply it almost anywhere where the Cowboys are mentioned. I'll just sit back and ponder the deeper implications of what you've revealed here this morning.

Just a goofy take here but I don't know if it is a glass anymore. Possibly a Styrofoam cup with a straw or perhaps a plastic sippy cup.

I'm not interested in refreshing.

4 is not a refreshing answer to 2 + 2 but it's always right.
