Just curious what many thought about what SP is doing in New Orleans and at any point did you want SP to be the next coach of the Cowboys... For some reason I think this could be the last year for BP, he doesn't look to well as far as his health... It's highly doubtful that SP could leave New Orleans, so who do you think would replace BP once he is gone...

Houston has to be kicking themselves for not drafting Bush, not to mention all of those teams who passed on Drew Brees...

I'd rather have Payton than Zimmer.

Are you saying he doesn't look well because of the dehydration thing? 25 year olds in the best shape of their life get dehydrated.

Let's just get real, BP will not coach for another 5 years... Looking long term you would have thought that JJ would have at least considered it... Knowing JJ he will go with another big name... I see BP with 1 more year at most...

If we wanted SP to replace Parcells we would have done what Washington did with Greg Williams - throw a ton of money at him and make him assistant head coach.

i knew we made a mistake letting payton go to the saints, i wanted him to be the next coach now when BP leaves we will start the Switzer / Gaily search over again unless Jerry spends alot of money on a coach again

Which is exactly my thoughts... It took us long enough to get a good coach after Jimmy... And I see Payton as a younger version of Bill Parcells... Would not suprise me one bit to see Payton have some success this year...

Even if BP honors his contract I just can't see him extending... With the new stadium coming you want to have all your marbles in place...

Does anyone really think that Payton wouldn't jump at the chance to move from HC of the Saints to HC of the Cowboys.
That's like being the coach of the Minnesota Twins and Steinbrenner calls you and asks you to coach the Yankees...
In fact, if that happened, I would feel a lot BETTER about it because Payton now will have HC experience on his resume.

I do love these things about him so far and I know its still early but:
1) he has his team prepared, has the opposition well scouted, and he is playing to the strengths of the players he has
2) He has his team playing well above their talent level. Cmon, some of his best defensive players are cast offs from our roster. Fujita has been very good for them. Killer Keith Davis would be a stud SS for them if we had let him walk too. Payton has gone out and gotten guys that he knows and guys that are fitting his system and its working. Bottomline, Payton is making a 3 course dinner with chopped liver.
3) He looks extremely professional there on the sideline and looks like he is the dude in charge....there are a number of coaches that don't look like they're the DUDE over there, the worst ever being Spurrier at Wash. Tice was bad too. Payton looks like he has instantly won the respect of his players and they listen to him. I guarantee you that isn't the case on every team.
4) for the first time in history, the Saints look like a disciplined team. They aren't leading the league in penalties and aren't killing themselves or drives with penalties.
5) he's a QB coach. He'll do well developing QBs and putting them in a position to succeed IMO.
6) I'm starting to wonder if our complaints about him while he was here were unwarranted and that maybe, just maybe BP was the guy we should've been blaming. Perhaps BP was the one putting his foot on the brake all the time?

Its still early and maybe not all of these will turn out to be true....but that is what I see through 3 games....
I'm liking what Payton is doing in that toilet franchise and starting to think that YES, I would like him to take over the greatest sports franchise in history when BP leaves. But I still reserve the right to change my mind. :D

I'm not so sure that he would jump ship... He has a player in Reggie Bush who IMO will be a big named star... He now has a QB in Brees... He has the draft next year to fill in the missing pieces along with free agency... Once he get's his team where he needs it to be he could be looking at a major winner... Why would you jump ship?

Think about it, the Cowboys have no QB... They run a 3-4 in which he doesn't have a clue about... And TO and Glenn are both over 30 and in their 11th year... It could be looking bad in another couple of years if we don't address certain areas...

I agree it is unlikely Payton would jump ship, but I disagree with some of your reasons.

Obviously Bush, Brees, some quality WR's and defensive players are reasons he would stay, but the idea that he would refuse Dallas because of a bad situation there doesn't make sense.

Remember, Payton likes Romo - he tried to trade for him when he got to New Orleans.

As for the WR's, sure TO and Glenn aren't in their prime, but they have strong years left barring injury, and there are ALWAYS areas that have to be addressed. No one takes over a team thinking every position is in the best shape possible for the next 5+ years.

And as for the defense, Payton is an offensive guy who has defensive coordinators that are in charge of the defense - the fact we now play a 3-4 defense is not a negative factor, especially if it proves successful.

I suspect contractual obligations, loyalty to the team that gave him his first NFL head coaching job and a desire to continue building a team he already has headed in the right direction would be much more important factors.

The thing that is funny about this thread is that I recall how many Cowboy fans wanted his head last year, and now that he is having success in NO he is being praised by Cowboy fans.

You've got it backwards - he's saying the Saints are the Twins and the Cowboys are the Yankees.

He'd never hear the end of it if he left NO. It doesn't surprise me at all that he's had success there though. Of all the assistant coaches under Parcells, I'd hoped for him to take over when Parcells retires. Some may not like it, but my money's on Zimmer for that role now..

How can you call the head of a guy when he isn't calling the plays... Everyone knows BP runs the show...

I totally agree with you... He would never hear the end of it... Wouldn't suprise me if the NFL didn't charge the Boys with tampering lol... Bottom line the NFL wants a winner in NO for obvious reasons, and for a coach to leave would definitely be a major setback...

lysdexia? :D
yeah you read me backwards bro.

you guys who said that Payton could have to Saints in pretty good position in the years to come are right, i agree with that...
but I also know that draw of coaching the world famous Dallas Cowboys is an undeniable factor and those that refuse to believe that are fooling themselves.
I also know Jerry Jones can be VERY persuasive and his has megahuge deep pockets. And money talks...contracts can be bought out. NO isn't going to outbid Jerry for Payton if JJ decides that he wants Payton.
Even if Payton has success in NO, its not like that franchise is going to win a SB....he'd legitimately have a shot to win one here and not be all that far away with the building blocks we have already in place.
And eventually, the whole hurricane thing is going to blow over, hopefully by next season, so Payton leaving at some point in the next few years won't cause him to be reviled by the media for doing so.
Also, Payton absolutely loves Romo. Romo ain't leaving Dallas. I imagine we'll have him locked up for even longer at some point. Payton loves most of our players and will take any crumbs that fall off our plate personnel-wise.
Face it, no matter what Payton accomplishes in NO, even if he posts a better record than we do, coming to coach the Cowboys would be a natural PROGRESSION for him, or any coach for that matter. We ARE the big show.
