Is this why people hate the Cowboys?

While alot of times it can be said we don't get enough attention when we are winning, it can also be said we get too much attention when we are losing. When Rob made that comment about philly, he even said he didn't realize how much attention it would get, it would've been nothing in Cleveland.

When you have more than one team that thinks your their rival, that's when you know something is going on. I remember a guy telling me he was our main rival, I had to guess 3 times before I got it right.

There is a natural hate there, you can just about mention every other team, but the only team that almost every non-cowboy fan will react negatively to first is the Cowboys. We are the team they love to hate.

The only thing I have to say to it all the time is, 'they hate us cause they ain't us'.

People hate constant winners. Cowboys were always winning and in the news. They hate the America's team label. They hate that they play on Thanksgiving every year. They hate when they play on MNF and such, even when they aren't winning. They were and still are the face of the NFL since TV coverage started branching out. Now throw in the largest stadium around with the largest screen.

The thing about the "Americas Team" title is that the media gave us that, because everywhere the boys played the stadium sold out? Thanks to Tex, Landry, Staubach etc.... haters will hate. The new Americas team is now the Steelers IMO...

Umm...Jay the Cowboys have lead the league in attendance both home and away for the last two years and the Steelers aren't even in the top five.

You have been fooled by the media and the visuals of the Terrible Towel on your television. It's a perfect sleight of hand.

The only team close to the Cowboys in anything, (merchandise, ratings and attendance is the Packers).

Terrible Towels were a perfect gimmick to get a crowd involved. Wish Dallas has something like that.

uhh nobody outside the northeast gives a flip about the Red Sox, much less hates them.

I mentioned the nickname to a friend of mine. She doesn't watch football. She said that is stupid, and America doesn't have a team. I told her sorry to disappoint you, but it's the Cowboys. She then informed me that she hated the Cowboys (remember that she doesn't watch football), because her parents and grandparents hated the Cowboys (Giants fans).

:(

Then tell her this also....God made the color of his team....Blue...for the sky, White...for the clouds....Silver....because every cloud have a silver lining.....

Not at all and it has nothing to do with "America's team" either. It's 100% because in a large part of the country (outside of Texas) most Cowboys fans are ignorant bandwagon jumpers that really don't know anything about the sport, but are fans because of the Superbowls. That's much less likely now than because of the 90s, so there are a lot less haters now and much more Patriots and Steelers haters.

This is not true. In fact I am certain it's quite possibly the exact opposite.

It is the reason most often given by Cowboy haters as to why they hate the Cowboys and their fans.

Here's how I see it. Every team in every city has their fair share of casual fans. Now I live in eagle country and these are some die hard fans. (don't know what's taking so long) But they "bleed" eagle green.

OK great for them. But for every one of these guys that live and die with the eagles, there's one or more "casual" fans.

Same thing with the Cowboys. But back to my original point that the non local Cowboy fans are not more likely to be casual. I became a fan in the late 70's. Pre-internet and pre-ESPN.

Not easy being a fan back then of a non-local team and getting the info and coverage that you wanted. As I see it, you poll a 1000 non-local Cowboys fans, you're less likely to get answers that would lead you to believe they are casual, then if you polled a 1000 local Cowboy fans.

It's easier to be a casual fan of the local team.

It's jealously. That's all it is. The America's Team label was given to us by NFL Films. Hard to hate us for that.

We're the only team in the league that doesn't need to win to be a top story. And that fact irritates the other fan bases.

Tex Schramn coined the title I believe and then NFL Films picked up on it.

How the Cowboys became America's Team - Steve Sabol

The facts are simple enough. The Cowboys famous tagline didn't come from them....

it came to them....

Cowboys, the real kind, with lariats, saddle ponies, and 10-gallon hats, have always been bigger than life for Americans. They ride tall in the saddle. They are men of few words, but men that mean what they say. They fight, maybe, but only on the side of right. They travel heroically. They move where the winds and their wills take them. They are self-made. They are the best of what we hope we are and want to be. They are COWBOYS!

No boy that lived at any time in the 20th century could fail to understand that and what that word means. Cowboys are not only heroic, they are free from the constraints that chafe us in modern life. They live in the West of our dreams, where skies are endless and the horizon is not a limit but a waypoint to adventure.

Other teams have names that let you root for fur or fangs or feathers, but the Cowboys are different. A Cowboy is something you could be, and probably wanted to be. At least when you were young and your world had no fences.

Cowboys are not just America's team, they are America itself. All the good things we stand for, the men we are, or we feel we will be. Someday.

Of course they are America's team. After all, they're us.:starspin

Tex Schramm was head of advertising as well. He only attempted to use what was available to elevate his product. Under Jerry Jones, the director of public relations for the Cowboys has been Rich Dalrymple.

But their tagline came to them courtesy of Bob Ryan, of NFL films. Some three decades ago, he was producing their annual highlight film. His script opened with this: 'They appear on television so often that their that their faces are as familiar to the public as presidents and movie stars. They are the Dallas Cowboys, America's team.'

Good stuff. So good, it found its way not only into the highlight reel but also onto the lips of network TV announcers and into the hearts of Cowboy management.

There's countless reasons for this....most of them which have been stated already. The media plays a large part in making a lot of casual and neutral football fans into Cowboy haters...like all of the uninformed fans who think Romo is a choker.

It's also the "cool thing" to do now by bashing Romo and The Cowboys so most of these people feel as if they're a part of something. Then you have your fans of other teams like the Saints for instance who have in their heads that they're all of a sudden rivals of Dallas and will constantly root against the Cowboys.

It's a typical case of the fan of another team that hates Dallas more than he/she loves their own team.

You know the funniest thing about the nick name issue is that people claim we are not really America's team or blame Dallas fans like we came up with the name. Yet the Media or another teams fans every year claim that they are "The New America's Team" remember with the Saints.

So I guess it's the Cowboys who are not allowed to have the nick name :laugh2:

They hate us because of our success.

They hate us because of our tradition.

They hate us because we have 5x more Super Bowls than most other teams.

They hate us because they have "Star" envy. They want to be a Cowboy but can't.

They hate us for all kinds of reasons and the America's Team name (that the Cowboys didn't call themselves, NFL Films did) is just one of them.

It has to be more than success though. Otherwise Pittsburgh would start getting some of that hate. San Francisco too. Green Bay would be on everyone's most hated list.

I think it just boils down to the fact that it doesn't matter how good or bad the Cowboys are, they are always the most important team in the league.

No other team can say that. They're all important when they win. When they lose, nobody outside of their own fan base cares.

Because of the Cowboys' success, they have been a featured NFL franchise throughout most of the country because they draw in ratings. When I was a kid in Alabama, they were the team on TV every week, which is probably one of the reasons I grew to love them. (Mainly, I just liked the star on their helmet. ... Hey, I was a kid!).

I think their exposure created both love and animosity. Now the media makes sure to take advantage of both with sensational "headlines" to draw in both the haters and the fans.

Guys, it isn't about success anymore otherwise the hate would be fading.

Yet, Dallas has remained one of the NFL's top TV draws because the Cowboys became TV darlings under Landry.

John Madden said a few years ago when Dallas was having a bad season, but the reason the Cowboys deserved to be on Monday Night Football anyway was because of their popularity/high ratings (poor paraphrase).

They are a draw, and if you are not a fan, that makes them the team you love to hate/root against.

One of my good friends is a die-hard Saints fan, she is from Houston...

She watches football on Sunday for 2 reasons:
  1. To root for Cowboys loss
  2. To root for a Saints win
This is usually what she says "The Saints won yesterday! It would have been perfect if the Cowboys would have lost."

All i can do is :laugh2:
