Mackey is in my top 5, but yes. Gonzalez is the best I have ever seen.

JMO

If I remember correctly Gonzalez has scored about 40 more times than Mackey.

Gonzalez is the cream of the crop.

Yes. WG made it for anyone who wanted to use it. For the first time since I started posting on a Cowboys forum my sig doesn't have the word Peace in it. It's still there though because Pops was peace.

I am still so shocked by this whole thing. You know, I don't care that he was a Cowboys fan at all (same as you and some other's in that regard). Good people are good people. He just made my visits to this board so entertaining for so many years on end. I know you took the loss hard from reading the first 80 posts on that thread. I took it hard too. He really was a great man, a great fan, and a genuine person.

Anyway, Thanks for the permission. And thanks Woodys Girl for making it.

Cheers, let's celebrate.

Witten is similiar to Steve Largent. Not a wide receiver, but very similiar.

If he can keep up consistently sure they would. Gonzalez has been amazing for a long time. It can't be denied.

Imagine how Gonz is going to do now that he has a legit Quarterback and Running back to take some heat off of him

Don't know how true it is - but I actually read where Gonzalez is struggling in his new offense.

I took the news very hard. I had to personally call several on the staff and then post the news for the rest of the staff and then the whole forum. I was the last person to get to talk to him and it was just days before he died. I let the staff know how he was doing and he made me think he was going to be okay. Looking back on something he said at the end of that conversation and I pretty much know he knew he was dying and was saying goodbye for good.

I think the thing that hit me hardest was that he had been gone for almost 2 weeks when I learned. I would have flown to Texas for the funeral had I known. I know some of the other staff would have to.

I wish more people got to know him as the staff did. He was so amazing behind the scenes here for his self deprecating humor and what a wonderful example. Every one of us went back and read all of our old PMs from him.

It's a very hard loss for us. The membership here have been great about offering thoughts on the man. It has healed a lot of wounds. He genuinely cared about every fan on this forum. I wish some posters knew how much he really did care for them. It didn't matter our ages, we were all kids and kids get overly excited about stuff. He was one of a kind.

Tony Gonzalez is the best TE ever. Witten is the best in the NFL right now though. Not a doubt in my mind about that.

Right now I will give you that for tenure purposes, but Witten is a better run blocker than Gonzo was. Witten like Gonzo is a threat, short, medium, and deep and is like a blackhole when the ball comes to him.

If Witten continues to play like he is, he will have the better career and there is zero doubt in my mind.

btw, I think I made a mistake not long ago when I said I though Bennett could be better. He is more atheletic and plays the way Witten does. (catching and blocking), but I'm not sure he will ever have the sure handed with solid concentration like Witten.

The thing about Witten being open...is that he doesn't really have to be to catch balls. He's so big and Romo is so accurate that they can just place the ball where the defender can't get it and Wittenw ill come down with it. Look at that pass where Tony kinda stepped up and put it over Witten's shoulder so he could get down to the 1. He wasn't really open but with his size and where the ball was, defender never really had a chance.

While me & Jr. were watching the game, I found myself continually commenting on how #82 is simply a BEAST! He's not athletically smooth or fluent by any means but he gives LBs & DBs fits trying to cover him. He was twisting those dudes like pretzels in the secondary last night! No way he's not legitimately the best TE in the game right now: great hands, great route runner, very good blocker...what else can you ask for in a TE?! IMO, the only reason he isn't regarded as the best league-wide is b/c he's not "athletic" like a Gonzalez or Gates, but he's definitely a better football player!

Look at where Romo throws the ball when he goes to Witten. These guys are exactly on the same page on most plays. So, Romo looks at Witten and sees where he is in relation to the defender. Romo simply throws the ball where only Witten will have a chance to grab it. Because Witten has excellent hands, 9 times out of 10 its a completion.

Witten doesn't need extreme seperation. He is playing against line backers and safeties. He just needs a chance to make a play on the ball.

He's getting there, but right now I give the nod to Gonzalez. Gates might also have a slight edge on Witten for now as well.

He's perfect for this system, BUT:

1) Kellen Winslow: he was a cyborg
2) Tony Gonzalez: see Kellen Winslow
3) Witten:a beast
4)Mackey: old school
5)Novacek: loved him to death
6) Billy Joe Dupree: underrated
7) A host of others: Antonio Gates,Casper, Cosbie, Francis, etc.........

Witten is the best Cowboys TE ever, closely followed by Novacek & Cosbie.
Don't forget Cosbie. He was outstanding.

I think Witten is the Best TE in the game right now. I think that their are a few good TEs playing right now. Gates, Olsen, Winslow Jr., a few others. I think that the best TE I ever saw play was probably Bavaro. He could do it all and they didn't come any tougher. Some of the other great TEs I've watched play.

Mike Ditka
Tony Gonzales
Charlie Sanders
Dave Casper
Kellen Winslow
Jackie Smith
Todd Christiansen
Russ Francis
Brent Jones

I never really saw Mackey but their is no question that he was a great player. Maybe the best to ever play the position.

A guy that often gets overlooked in disccussions of TEs, who I thought was as smart a TE as I ever saw and a very good TE, is Ozzie Newsome.

Kellen Winslow - one of the best I've ever seen. He would be in the Hall if he won a Super Bowl but we all know the HOF is not a great selector of real talent (Swann).

He actually changed the position due to his talent.

The best part of this is that we have a physical freak of a TE to learn from Witten.

For good reason I have not seen his name mentioned but Jackie Smith was a hell of a player. One huge inoportune drop does not undue a great career, and that guy was a beast in his day.
