I dont want to move him off the field on 3rd or obvious passing downs when Gregory/Mincey comes in. Gregory and Mincey will be getting some snaps in those situations for sure. Move Hardy to the 1 tech on 3rd down and keep Crawford at the 3 is what you suggest?

If the 4 guys playing on a 3rd & passing down are Hardy, Gregory, Mincey and Crawford, they Crawford & Mincey would be your DT's... WHY? Because Hardy is a better pass rushing DE than either of them. To move Hardy inside so Mincey could rush the pass from a DE spot would not be the best use of personal given their strengths and weaknesses.

Is it just me or do we have lots of WR's? A lot of cuts will have to be made in this position group.

I ALWAYS feel this was when I watch almost NFL teams during the preseason. Last night where I am the Lions - Jets game and Patriots - Packers games where on and the I was seeing what <seemed> to be great WR play out of the Lions and Packers #5, #6, #7, #8, etc WRs during the games. I alternatively feel that way aout any number of other teams every pre-season.

I think the net of it that it is difficult to really analyze WR play in the preseason -- in particular the delta between a #4 WR and let's say a camp body #8 WR in preseason isn't usually that bit and it's really difficult as a FAN to really pick out who might project to be a good WR2 or WR3 if they were forced to play up.

In "obvious" passing situations they often play both DTs as 3techs with a wide gap in the middle of the line.

I would think the only way Hardy would be kicked inside is if on those obvious passing downs, you had both Lawrence and Gregory in the game, which has been tried. In that situation, I think hardy has been kicked inside. But playing Hardy at the 3 tech for more than just certain passing situations would be downright insane.

Weeden is simply a far superior QB right now.

The Cowboys are going to carry 3 QBs somehow. The 3rd just may be on the PS.

The battle is Vaughn vs Showers for that 3rd spot, Weeden is safe as the 2. His game and a half last year of 85 QB rating football was real football versus studs.
He is fine as a back up.

Who knows what we do at RB. A million possibilities still. I see no reason to go long there. Plenty of street options if you want them at any given time and you can use the PS as well.

Id take showers over Vaughn for that reason you mentioned earlier. Vaughs reads are slow. Showers is a little long with his throws right now but atleast they arent late. Being late gets you ints and ur wrs hurt.

None of the QBs showed much last night.

Weeden just seems cursed. Something is just off. Capable backup for a game or two is his ceiling.

Vaughn looked OK but not anything special.
Showers reminded me of RWilson physically.

Is Orton still on BUF????

It was the first preseason game and I don't want to overreact but Brinkley looked terrible. I was wondering if anyone else saw that. I thought he was a good pickup in the offseason. I know everyone's ripping on Heath for missing tackles but Brinkley was just as bad. He looked lost on a couple of plays. Not good at all. Hopefully he starts playing like he did at Minnesota. I know he's not spectacular but he's solid. At least I thought he was

I don't think Brinkley makes the team. Gachkar is a better special teams player and the rookie Wilson was very impressive. I think we'll go with Lee, McClain, Hitchens, Wilson, Gachkar and Wilber.

Lache is Lacking IMO. He looks awful to put it boldly. Dill and Heath should be fired tomorrow. Brinkley sucks as well.

Dill - absolutely terrible. 1st cut.

Greenberry - really bad game for him showed no hands. 1st cut.

Lucky Whitehead - blazing return speed and vision. But he must hold on to the ball. Which is\was a worry of mine

Gus Johnson - Sad he is hurt. Tough inside runner. Not much speed, but got what he was given.

Weeden < Vaughan - I though Vaughan spun it well all night. He missed a wide open Street on a 3rd down. Got pressured a ton (see Dill). I don't see why we keep BW unless the coaches feel Vaughan has no mastery of reading Defense and\or playbook

Seastrunk - good speed and bounce. I guess he is the next guy up at this point.

D Wilson - looks like a starting NFL LB. Good pick.

Gregory - looks like a situational NFL rush guy already. Good pick.

Hardy - Massive guy. Looks more like a 3 Tech to me.

White - looks like a NFL CB. He will play somewhere.

Jones - see above. Didn't get beat and made tackles. Need to see more tests in the pass game.

Escobar - He plays behind a HOF TE. Other than that he looks the part in the pass game.

Street - He plays behind DEZ and TWill. But he passes eye test. Vaughan looked for him and Escobar all night. That should tell you something about their abilities.

In my opinion, if Weeden has to play any significant amount time, the Cowboys season is over regardless. So why not go with the young guy to see if he develops? At this point, the Cowboys have very little to lose.

Dill and Greenberry were my Friday cut's, as well. Any word on if they've got their visit from the Turk yet?

Gus has little to no explosion. He's good for 2 to 3 yards, but that's about it. Practice squad material.

I'm really excited about Lucky. Fumble aside, the guy clearly has speed and vision. He may even be an upgrade over Harris as a returner.

You can bet Hardy will slide inside in Nickel and Dime situations.

White made this team last night. If a football season was 1 game, White would be the team MVP.

Jones has a so so outing. Many of struggles were to be expected. Corner is one of the more difficult transitions from college.

D Wilson had a mix bag for a night, but he did have that headsup stop in the backfield.

Seastrunk is too indecisive. He clearly has moves on moves and decent speed, but he need's to pick a hole and hit it as hard as he can, come what may. Too many times it looked like he is always trying to get the homerun and that is a really bad trait to have in the zone blocking scheme.

Street had an okay night. I wouldn't say exceptional, but he did what he was supposed to in limited touches.

I'm thinking Heath loses his job this year to White/Jones, considering their position flex. The Cowboys, in my opinion, will go light at Safety. And Wilcox job isn't necessarily safe, either. He may make the team, but I could see the Cowboys pulling him off the field in obvious passing situations, in favor of White and/or Jones.

Weeden had the insane fumbled snap but his passing was accurate, smart and ripping SD's 1st team D.

Vaughan was NOT better. That is a weak fan-based narrative.

Vaughn shows good arm strength and decent athleticism but he doesn't make reads nearly as quickly as Weeden and doesn't see the field as well. He's is young but he needs to show more to stick.

But here's the question. Is Weeden that much better that the Cowboys could contend with him, should Romo miss significant time? Whose ceiling is higher? For me, while Vaughan doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence, I don't think he's that far behind Weeden and his potential is off the charts by comparison.

Honestly, I get why people don't like Weeden. But the attempts to try to argue that Vaughn is/was better is bizarre to me. There was nothing in that game that would lead me to believe Vaughn was/is better.

And are you saying Hardy should be playing the 3 tech?

For me it's not whose better, maybe Weeden has a slight edge at this point however does anyone have any confidence in him if Romo goes down? Not really, so maybe just keep the young one and gain a roster spot.

Amen. BW is not so much better. We need that roster spot IMO. Either will be scooped off waivers so pick one and let's move forward with showers on the PS.

I think they already have their guys..Dez/T-Will/Beasley/Street/Whitehead < his return ability alone puts him above the rest of the receivers, who haven't shown much of anything yet.

I'm curious to see how Street blocks. Haven't really paid attention to him in those situations yet and that was an underrated part of Harris' game

Lucky better hold onto the ball. Other than that from a sp33d shiftiness point. Dude is scary. But playing D2 schools in the return game isn't the nfl.

Brandon Weeden gives us a better chance to win than Vaughn/Showers. It may not be an incredible difference, but it is certainly enough to warrant keeping Weeden. If we lose Romo for the season, we are done. If we lose Romo for three weeks, Weeden vs Vaughn could be the difference between a bye vs playing week one, or a wildcard vs sitting at home.
