It is fundamentally American to know not to touch a punt

Yeah they should have known not to do that, but at the same time, what an absolutely stupid rule and I don't understand the logic behind it.

First off, the first player to touch the ball is.....the person who blocked it. This is not the same as a successful punt and the returner whiffing it being the first to touch it. The opposing team already touched the ball, it was an unsuccessful punt.

This is only speculation, but it was probably instituted to prevent some kind of shenanigans. For example, before the rule, say a punting team punts it, the ball hits the ground and starts tumbling low. There are a lot of the kicking's teams players coming fast. The receiving team could have "accidentally" kicked the ball trying to get to it launching it several yards in the direction they want knowing they're getting the ball either way. Without the rule, you could get quite a few guaranteed yards that way with no risk. With the rule, you're almost guaranteeing it's a jump ball which either team could get. That's only one possible example for why such a rule exists.

Jerry has a chance to set the tone for discipline like Jimmy would have by firing Fassel and his player this morning but he won’t, so it doesn’t matter.

MM screwed over?

The run is working.. so lets just go pass with a backup QB.
Yeah on one hand I give him his due for what he’s doing with that offensive line but he has no idea how to go with the run. Everyone but him knows Rush is not the guy to put the football in his hands. His passes look like punts.

We’re gonna blame the coach for a professional, not knowing to touch a punt, a loose football skittering scattering around the field, like a slippery water balloon?

We’re gonna blame the coach???
Why yes.

Firing would be too harsh.....but at the very least a coach could "Malcom Butler" a player for a game.

That doesn't ever happen in Dallas.
It’s just an outdated way of coaching. Nobody does this unless he’s a bum. And maybe he is I’m not entirely sure but you can’t make an example out of one guy while your whole team screws up. From the top down. For 28 plus years you’ve welcomed mistakes and mishaps. Jimmy cut someone who was probably gonna get cut anyway and he has the rep for cutting players for mistakes. Bit bad Jimmy lol.

Of course cuts are strategic especially when " teaching lessons" ......guys on the fringe of a roster have the shortest leashes of all.

Right lol but at the same time is Dak really in fear of being cut or Lamb? A cut like that puts fear in guys who are fringe or on cheap deals. Truthfully there are the guys that are actually playing well. Its the Zeke’s who don’t give a damn.

The kick was blocked and he tried to scoop it up and take off with it. I'm not saying it was right in this situation, I just think he was doing what you'd normally do when a kick is blocked!

What a dumb take.

He’s thinks that because it was a bonehead decision by a player that blocking the punt all together was wrong.

Im not sure anyone knows the rules, except Turpin. He immediately was screaming, and jumping the minute, he saw that guy touch the ball!!!

Get away !!

My god that was an awful loss
From video of the last time we blocked a punt and had a player (Nashon Wright) try to pick it up, it's clear that many players don't know how the rule works. They (and even the coaches then) seemed stupefied when the other team recovered after it was touched and was given the ball and a new set of downs.

I have trouble explaining it, other than to say that there are a lot of dumb players in the league.
