I believe the rule is you cannot touch a ball on a blocked punt after it crosses the line of scrimmage without it becoming a live ball for either side.

If a receiving team player touches the ball behind the line of scrimmage and the kicking team recovers the ball, the receiving team still gets the ball.

Once the ball crosses the line of scrimmage though, if the ball touches a receiving player it becomes a live ball for either side to recover.

..yep, that's where I was confused. But we have to believe the players should know that.

You can touch it - you just cant fumble the stupid thing. Idiot play by a scrub player after all that hard work on D. I can see why Parsons was so visibly frustrated on the sideline!

I always stated, when drafting any type(s) of player coming out into the draft, and in all of sports quite frankly.......do these bums know the basic rules that are taught in pee wee league? Or at least taught when they get to professional level? Its not only football but most of all sports, these overpaid farts dont know any of the rules or just simply panic in the heat of the moment.....

The defense fought so hard to force the punt and when that rookie in his first game just blew it you could see the defense just gave up. I hope that kid gets cut along with fassell.

I don’t spend as much time on this team as I used to, but I still follow pretty closely. I know the bottom of the roster guys for the most part.

I never heard of whoever it was that fumbled that punt. Seemed to treat it as an onside kick.

I have no idea how much fundamentals are covered in the NFL. It’s now horrific in MLB.

Fassel is one of the better and more experienced special teams coaches in the NFL.

There's no chance he hasn't had this discussion with his team. My guess is the guy just went brain dead in that situation or wanted to look like the hero scooping up a loose ball.

But I have doubts that this happened because Fassel didn't tell his special teams the rules.

Did they understand the rule when this special teams did the same thing two years ago? A O is a five year vet, it’s the coaching.

This team isn’t disciplined enough to not do stupid “stuff” like they did last night.

Now, back to the curl routes.

Maybe they need to show a tape of the Leon Lett play before every special team practice.

It's just a human condition to want to touch things. Like a kid in a store, they see something and have to touch it. Oh look! There's a shiny football. I can't help myself. I have to touch it.

You cant touch the ball after a blocked punt

I really hope the players finally understand this since the coaches are not going to tell them this
Usually when punt is blocked it goes behind LOS , but yesterday it kind of bounced other way, but still guys should have the knowledge to leave it alone or fall on it. oruwariye could have easily fall on the ball and smoother it , but he tried to pick up and run , hero to zero .

This is only speculation, but it was probably instituted to prevent some kind of shenanigans. For example, before the rule, say a punting team punts it, the ball hits the ground and starts tumbling low. There are a lot of the kicking's teams players coming fast. The receiving team could have "accidentally" kicked the ball trying to get to it launching it several yards in the direction they want knowing they're getting the ball either way. Without the rule, you could get quite a few guaranteed yards that way with no risk. With the rule, you're almost guaranteeing it's a jump ball which either team could get. That's only one possible example for why such a rule exists.
The issue I have is with the logic of the rule, especially around LOS - I don't know why that exists. To me, once the ball meets the punters foot the LOS should disappear - that's a forfeit of possession. The LOS is arbitrary at that point.

My solution to all of this is, if a ST player gets his hand on the ball wherever that ball hits the ground should be where the ball is spotted on the change of possession. I don't like that a blocked punt (meaning the player getting his hand on the ball, not the way the rule words a blocked punt) isn't automatically rewarded to the return team.

Nothing is easier than to say what should be done when you know you don’t have do it.

So when Leon Lett had his mishap did Jerry fire him and coach?
You are going to just keep ignoring the other 10 ton elephant in the Jimmy room of cutting Curvin Richards for fumbling?

Richards was a more established player too, and his mistake didn't cost us the game. He was cut because he was expendable and not a starter to put fear into everyone else on the team to not be an idiot or it would cost us a playoff run.

You definitely cut a PS squad guy who in his first game makes an unacceptable blunder that any Pop Warner kid knows not to make.

So tell me, do you think Johnson was wrong to cut Richards? I know this is going to be very difficult, if not impossible for you, but nonetheless, I want you to be honest with your answer.

Touch a punt!!!
Who touches a punt you’re taught that in peewee football get away from it get away from it!!!! It’s as fundamentally American as calling a pop-up. I got it. I got it.!!!!! I got it mine mine mine!

That ******* needs to be cut

My God we played too damn well for Coach McCarthy to be screwed over by that stupidity. I’m sick of that lackadaisical bs in this arena.
Blimey! The really stoopid thing was Fassel rationalizing it and explaining it to an angry Yoda in the locker room and then Yoda accepting it the next day.
Don't touch the cheerleaders, don't touch the punts!
