They're actually in the top seven, not top five. There were three players chosen (Charles Woodson, Asante Samuel and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie) and two alternates (Antoine Winfield and Sheldon Brown) ahead of Newman and Jenkins.

It also should be pointed out that neither Newman nor Jenkins finished in the top five in the fan voting, so it's not like it was just the fans' votes who made them alternates. Tracy Porter finished in the top five of the fan votes but wasn't even an alternate.

in all fairness charles woodson is the only one better. Asante is a good ball hawk but doesnt look anyone down (he gives up as much as he stops) sheldon brown is not better than either and neither is cromartie.
