It's 12:58 AM, I'm surrounded by women, drinks, and music YET...

I have been to the event many times. Still go to all kinds of music events all over the country.

I wish the local people would stay home at most of these events. If you want to get drunk and talk loudly with your friends, go somewhere else.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Thanks. I'm sure the locals appreciate you.

The only thing that is going thru my mind is how our Cowboys will address the oline. Is this fandom or addiction?

If I were sitting in a bar with a bunch of fat drug addicted crack hos at 2AM I wouldn't be worrying about the Cowboys. I would be worrying about how the hell I was going to get out of there.

As for fan or addict, if I have to pick one, I'm going with you're an addict. Not of the Cowboys type, but of the fat crack ho type since you are sitting in the bar with them. :D ;) :laugh2:

the "locals" at most of these events are full of crap.

They don't seem to be aware that most of these events require out of town tourism to pull it off.

If people from out of town stopped coming, the events would turn to crap as it would be nothing but a bunch of locals looking to get wasted as cheaply as possible.

im just glad SXSW is over. I do have to agree it has been getting out of hand the last few years. Also I live downtown so you can imgaine how much it is a pain for me to come and go during the biker ralley, SXSW, texas relays, and all those other events that get hosted downtown

Feh, a lot of us don't care about the event so much as having decent people inhabiting our city. Either way, pointless conversation because it's not going to stop on either side of the debate. We'll always get the ugly, belligerent tourists and you'll always have an event so you can come trample our town. Neither one of us will change that. In the end, I think you win anyway. Kudos, bro.

SXSW is bay far the most effective revenue producing event in the community. Residents win big time by having this event.

Personally, I wish it was more centrally located.

The relays are coming up. Lord I had forgotten about that. People dancing in the middle of I-35 while traffic is stopped? And yeah, I'm sure I sound like a jerk. But when you live here, the bands coming through aren't that impressive and the out of control tourists here for spring break and vacation sometimes get tiresome, probably because it lasts for quite a long time now.

We also have ACL, the F1 race (which I wouldn't be surprised if it produces more in the long-term), the Texas relays and SXSW.

If by winning you mean we get to get stuck in traffic, have the prices of living go up and have to deal with a lot of tourists on vacation act rowdy and rude, then, yeah, we win.

Our economy doesn't need much help here. We're doing fine here in the middle of this red state. The reason Austin does so well is because of its diversity, the tech industry and education from UT, St. Edwards, Concordia, ACC, etc. This city would be just fine without SXSW.

A co-worker of mine is going to Austin in April for MotoGP. They fly to a race every year. They went to Italy two years ago and then Spain last year. I guess this year they decided to stay stateside.

nobody is forcing you to live in a city ranked in the top 15 in size.

But claiming SXSW increases your cost of living is quite a stretch.

Of course not, but I'm free to talk about the idiots that come here. And 5,000 people move here a year after attending sxsw. So, yeah, the cost of living is impacted.

it doesn't matter what part of the country I'm in I can always find some jerk that thinks he has some sore of entitlement to the city that others don't have.

It usually involved being born there, but not always.

Wouldn't that also increase property value?

to be completely honest he is right about cost of living. ive lived here since 2006 and not only is it becoming more noticebly crowded everything from rent to groceries has seen steep increases. The only thing being built in austin now a days are high rise condos and luxury apartments. they are building 2 off riverside alone and you pass about 3 just driving on i35 which doesn't even include the ones they are bulding on S Lamar, S Congress, and Oltorf

Sounds like Dallas.

It's about being decent and considerate. Just when I think the world is progressing, I get excited and think to myself that people are evolving and the world is becoming a better place. Then I get a dose of tourists with attitudes like this. And I think to myself, "nope". It's actually the opposite. It usually doesn't matter when they're from; I find the Ugly American phenomenon to be the common factor amongst the great majority of them. Hey, look, a new city. Let's be imbeciles because we've never been to a progressive city.

he might be honest about it but he is still wrong. These things are not mutually exclusive.

An annual festival is not the reason for the increased cost of living in the city.
