he might be honest about it but he is still wrong. These things are not mutually exclusive.

An annual festival is not the reason for the increased cost of living in the city.

It's not the sole reason, but it is one reason why the cost of living goes up, because people decide to make it their home after coming here... because they decide Austin is better than where they're living. When there are more people and less places to live, the cost goes up. You know this, but you'll act like you don't since you already said it wasn't a factor. The fact is, you're wrong. But that's probably because you didn't know we get about 5,000 people a year now, just from from SXSW visitors making ATX their home. That's in addition to the other people who move here for other reasons.

Sounds like Dallas.
That's exactly what it is. Locals used to take pride in being the antithesis of uppity Dallas, but that's what the whole downtown scene is becoming.

I've never understood the perception that Dallas is 'uppity'. Uptown could be classified that way, but that place has really just blown up recently. But Uptown still doesn't make for a lot of the population.

Maybe because Dallas has the least 'Texan' feel to it.

Anyway, I agree. Austin had a different feel to it than Dallas that's probably changing. But that's what happens when people are having to relocate to TX because of job opporunity and the consensus best TX city from non Texans is Austin.

nobody is forcing you to live in a city ranked in the top 15 in size.

But claiming SXSW increases your cost of living is quite a stretch.

AUSTIN -- SXSW doesn't just mean thousands of visitors; it also means thousands of people who end up in Austin for good.

They come for the music, the film premieres and the BBQ, and a lot of them stay permanently.

Forbes named Austin the fastest growing city in America, and an average 150 people move here every day. According to a local realtor, Austin may see the biggest growth right after SXSW.

"About 20 to 25 percent of our buyer clientele have actually come to Austin for a festival,” said Theresa Bastian, co-owner of Keepaustinweirdhomes.com

Bastian is a realtor who moved to Austin after attending ACL.

“It was that (ACL) that made me say 'Oh, there's got to be a way to move here,” Bastian told KVUE.
Bastian believes people are attracted to the area for the views and the price, which is good news for local sellers.

“They’re moving from areas that cost more to live in than Austin does, so they're not really negotiating too hard on the price of homes," she said.

However, not everyone is as welcoming. You may have seen a popular t-shirt with the words “Welcome to Austin: Please don’t move here.”
Local screen-printing company Kong actually meant for the t-shirt to be a joke.

“We originally wanted to make a funny shirt for our friends,” said Kong co-owner Bruce Braden.

However, after a fan uploaded the shirt to the website Reddit.com orders started flying in.

I don't believe for a second that an annual music festival is the catalyst that drives people to live in Austin in any measurable way

and since you have provided nothing but your unsourced opinion for this, I will label it as idiocy and move on.

This is too funny. I guess you didn't read exactly what I said. I said it was part of it and I did, in fact, provide a source, which is right above your most recent, ignorant post. Move on though, because you're not dealing in facts. I am. I'll refrain from using the "I'm with stupid" smilie, but this is deserving of one.

Personally, I don't need a source. I hear this story a lot from people here often. I'm sure others living here would say the same thing. And I'm definitely not the only one to make this claim. A radio show had a city official stating the number was around 5,000 per year. In any case, I won't argue with you since you're obviously right about something you have no first hand knowledge of. I'm just glad it's over. Now we don't have to have anymore of your invidious clones dawdling around our city for another year. This makes me happy. :)

Of course not, but I'm free to talk about the idiots that come here. And 5,000 people move here a year after attending sxsw. So, yeah, the cost of living is impacted.

an agent only knows that net listings increase because they belong to the MLS in that region and can get such figures. They don't know if they are relocating from other regions unless they are the actual agent for the buyer.

you are pulling figures out of nowhere.

No entity exists that can track why people move to a given region.

Not nowhere, one can draw a logical conclusion based on several factors. And my number was based on a city official's comments, talking about the number based on her estimation from tech jobs, home purchases, etc. Those entities have ways of tracking how people were led to them and a lot say SXSW and other things. Bury your head if you want though. Those of us actually here know better. And have fun next time you come back through Austin, hipster. Like I said, I'm just glad most of them are gone. I'm sure there are some good people coming through though. I've just yet to meet many of them.

hipster?

stop being a bag. I'm in my 40's moron.

Sure, a few idiots might exist that move to a region exclusively because it holds a music festival one week out of the year, but anybody citing solid figures of such a thing are just exhibiting confirmation bias.
