Kornheiser to Join ESPN's 'Monday Night Football'

The Washington Post

Wednesday, February 8, 2006; 8:30 AM

Washington Post columnist Tony Kornheiser will be joining the ESPN broadcast booth for "Monday Night Football" next season, a network source said late last night.

Kornheiser will serve as a color commentator in what is expected to be a three-man booth for the NFL staple, which is moving from Disney-owned ABC to Disney-owned ESPN starting next fall. Network speculation has revolved around longtime ESPN play-by-play man Mike Tirico and former Washington Commanders quarterback Joe Theismann joining Kornheiser in the booth.

Terms of the deal were unavailable. An ESPN announcement is expected today.

Kornheiser is expected to continue on ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption" with fellow Post columnist Mike Wilbon, with the weekday show being aired live on Mondays from the site of that night's NFL game.

Emilio Garcia-Ruiz, The Post's assistant managing editor for sports, expressed optimism last night that Kornheiser's career at the paper would continue.

"We're happy for Tony," Garcia-Ruiz said. "But we still want him to continue to work for the paper. That's what's best for us and for our readers."

It's called sarcasm.

When will they learn that "The Game" is the show....not the announcers.

Did he get a new show? His spot on ESPN Radio was filled by Colin Cowherd a year or so ago.

He has a show on D.C. right now on sportstalk980.

Currently he's talking about the Duke/UNC game. I think he might be on XM also.

go to sportstalk980.com and if you register, you can listen to his show online.

..........I wish they would get rid of Thiesman! He is such a freakin' Deadskin homer it's pathetic! Maybe the skins won't be on MNF much this coming season...... I guess I'll have to listen to games on the web so I don't have to hear his jibberish.:D

the funny thing is that Moose is such a Homer that he makes Thiesman look like a Skins hater with his level of Homerism.

I thought "Mr. Tony" didn't stay up late enough to even watch MNF... now he's going to host? They'd better have a futon in the booth for him! :laugh2:

That said, I like him as an addition. He's a good personality.

Tirico is one of my least favorite play by play guys, though. The way his voice squeaks and cracks whenever there's a big play is jarring and distracting.

And Theisman... well he's about the worst garbage there is. That guy is so pompous and annoying. I only hope that the subtraction of McGuire improves him slightly.

I think the best MNF booth for entertainment purposes would be Irvin, Riggins, and then a straight, classic play by play guy.

Gawd can the please get rid of Joe! I can't stand him, he is absolutly the WORST commentary guy there is. I can't wait to see ESPN's ratings fall through the floor. ESPN is going to kill Monday Night Football.

You are insane.

Johnston isn't even close to Theismann's level in that regard. I think both he and to a greater extent, Aikman go out of their way at times to criticize the Cowboys.

You will never hear that from Theismann.

Even as a Commanders fan, I cant stand listening to Joey T. He is terrible.
Tony K, will be a good addition. He has a great personality and isnt so arrogant that he cant admit when he is wrong. Not to mention I dont like Tirico either.

My ideal modern MNF crew would start with Tim Ryan. Give him Tony K, and a GOOD play by play guy, even Buck.

Kornheiser is a perfect choice; now all they need to do is dump Theismann and add Michael Wilbon for some chemistry and they'll have a hit.

Kornhole knows less about sports than my dog. I'd flip on his old radio show occasionally and coulnd't believe it was on a sportstalk network. He never discussed sports and when he did he was clueless.

I wish DirectTV would offer a service that synched radio broadcasts with the game feed so we'd have an option. My favorite broadcasts of the year are the preseason games that have radio teams for each team doing a half. I don't mind the "homerism" of the radio guys because they often provide insight into the team that we'd otherwise be unaware of. "Homerism" without insight is just annoying. They also seem to target the more football savvy fans as opposed to major broadcast teams who treat us as though we've never seen this football thing before.

I hate when the Cowboys are on MNF but now I really pray that they don't get a single MNF game next year but I fear they'll have 3 games.

This has got to be sarcasm. Otherwise, you're just horribly wrong. Moose and Aikman are like the Anti-Theisman. I'm not sure I've heard them say one good thing about the Cowboys. (exaggeration, of course, but still, they seem to go out of their way to criticize the Boys, not praise them.)
