What I wish I knew was who they valued long-term across the defensive line because it's truly going to be a rebuilding project, much like the offensive line.
Do they love Brent? Is Selvie a stop gap or do they want him to start at DE if everyone is healthy. Who are going to be the center pieces across this DLine for years to come? They sure seem to like Coleman a lot.
DE 30 Mincey, Jeremy - Looks like a good stopgap this year and maybe next.
DE 24 Crawford, Tyrone - He was the starter. Is he the future starter at LDE or do they need an upgrade?
DE 27 Selvie, George - Backup. Future unknown.
DE 24 Edwards, Lavar - Difficult to evaluate. Looked OK. Has only had 1 week to learn scheme and came from a 3-4.
DE 26 Crawford, Jack - Will he play this week?
DE 30 Spencer, Anthony - Not sure why they didn't keep him on PUP. Age and injury issues are a big question.
DE 22 Lawrence, DeMarcus - Hopefully a top starter in the future.
DT 27 Melton, Henry - Looked good in limited snaps. Still reasonably young. Previous Pro Bowler.
DT 23 Coleman, Davon - Better than expected for a UDFA at this point.
DT 24 Bishop, Ken - Better than expected for 7th round pick at this point. Already better then Hayden, IMO.
DT 26 McClain, Terrell - Looked really good in 2013 and terrible as a rookie on 2011. Excellent reviews in OTAs, then injured in TC.
DT 28 Hayden, Nick - Do they need him once T. McClain is 100%? If Josh Brent returns, then definitely no need for Hayden, IMO.
DT 26 Brent, Josh - Still only 26. Was a very strong player, but never overly quick. Was he a Marinelli type player even at this previous peak? Bishop probably has better quickness.
DT 27 Okoye, Amobi - I don't see him being activated unless injuries occur at DT.
DT 23 Whaley, Chris - A developmental prospect currently on IR.
RDE - The combination of Lawrence and Mincey should be good when Lawrence returns. Mincey might even be OK for next season playing mostly run downs with Lawrence on passing downs. I guess Spencer will get snaps at RDE at some point before Lawrence returns.
DT3-tech - Melton already looks good despite no preseason. Coleman has improved every week of the preseason and continued that in game 1.
DT1-tech - McClain and Bishop might be really good as they get time in this defense. Hayden is a stopgap. Will they even need Josh Brent if Bishop and McClain progress?
LDE - Crawford should be good against the run which is a big part of the LDE position in this defense. Will Selvie's shoulder get better or do they move Edwards or Jack Crawford over there? When Lawrence returns to RDE, does Mincey move to LDE in the Nickel. Mincey has often moved to DT in the Nickel in the past, but I don't know if that's a big of a need at this point with Melton, Coleman and McClain having Nickel DT type ability.
Summary: The DL was the biggest worry for most fans in the off-season, but it might turn out to be the strength of the defense. The LB depth is looking thin and the DBs were a bit disappointing in game 1.
