If the defense can make the other team punt a few times a game, I will be satisfied!! If that happened last year the Cowboys would have made the playoffs.

By the way, for my FYI, does anyone know how many games that the defense played where they did not make the other team punt...just once!

What would you know about what I've tried and what I haven't?

I wasn't aware you had to be a Pollyanna to be a FAN.

Every since you passed the Bar, you have become a jerk! lol

There's a big difference in being better than last year and being better than if he was there. We are definitely worse than with him, and the LBing corps is worse than with him, but I think the defense (yards, points allowed, etc.) will be improved. They played a quarter or third of the season without him last year. I believe the defensive chemistry and understanding of the system, along with the depth in the rotations to keep guys fresh, make a big difference. We may still be bottom 3rd of the league, but that's better than where we were...I see no way we're at the actual bottom again.

I like your optimism. I am also optimistic that gas will go back to $2 a gallon and that mans will be humane to mans. And that Jerra will hire a world-class GM.
But please, check with me in December and let us see who was optimistic for good reason or who was duped by optimism for no good reason.

I will say this about the defense: in years past, the Cowboys have relied on stopgap veterans and aging stars trying to rekindle one more good year. This year, they are relying on young talent. Granted, that young talent could wind up being awful, but it does suggest the defense has a higher ceiling.

How can you make that leap?

So they have relied on aging stars. Meaning players that have performed in the past.

Now they are relying on young players that have shown nothing in the way of being actually competitive as yet.

How does that suggest the defense has a higher ceiling?

Lawrence as a rookie has a higher ceiling than Ware who could have been injured and thus not performing as well.

That makes no sense.

I certainly don't think I've claimed that you have to predict 6 or fewer wins to be a "real fan." Do you think I have?

Ground does feel a little chilly right now.

It's heat category 5 here in South Carolina.

Once is way more than zero. Imagine what happened. The other team did not punt the football

lol

I can't remember was it no punts in the 2nd half or entire game. Either way that bad. Let's not talk about this. Bad memories are floating in.

Home skillet, I didn't make any leap. I suggested the ceiling might be higher on account that we lack knowledge the requisite knowledge of the players to gauge their ceilings.

It comes down to Melton. If he can match Hatcher production they will be ok. If he looks like injured player out there....it will look alot like last year.

That's big shoes to fill, considering he has never gotten close to that production before, when perfectly healthy.

For me this season is predicated on two distinct areas.

1. Defensive push by the front.

Don't hand me the Marinelli get out of jail free card. You cannot take a cast off and make them a pro bowler.

The defense will need to pressure the quarterback or the secondary will AGAIN be exposed. This defense was built in the opposite direction because Jerry sees defenders getting beat in the passing game and doesn't understand the pass rush is what protects them. Just like the offensive line protects Romo. The game is skewed toward the offense to begin with by rules. So the best defense is to provide a hearty pass rush. Dallas did not build this defense that way. They threw money and picks at the backfield.

They still have no free safety which is the center fielder of the team. Now add in Lee going down, Carter still a question mark, and what do you have? Questionable up the middle, no consistent rush to pressure the quarterback, and defensive backs that cannot cover long enough which opens up the WR's.

2. Murray and TWill.

The offensive line should be better. But the real factors which will determine this offense are Murray and TWill.

Can Murray be consistent in the run game to keep the defenses honest?

Can TWill be enough of a threat to ease the pressure off Dez being the focal point of the passing game.

To me Witten has showed down. Escobar is still a what if. Street is a rookie and Harris and Beasley aren't consistent enough to force teams to look away from Dez.

I also have a real concern about Romo's back. I have never seen him as this super accurate passer to begin with. He has been more of a vicinity passer to me. So how will his back affect his accuracy? That remains to be seen. But age and health will begin to factor into his game. There will be a point when things just don't get better for him. Laffenberg thinks this is the beginning of the end for Tony. Who knows.

So pass rush and the running game and how effective TWill will be in his second year is what this season comes down to for me.

I will happily admit I was wrong if these no name defensive linemen can actually step up. But as it stands this isn't enough to cause me to think there will be any pass rush whatsoever. Because I don't see an edge rusher here at all and I see the team somehow counting on Spencer who may have played his last game. Now marry that with a soft interior defense that will give up the rushing yards and this is still a bottom dweller.

Now add an offense that is ASSUMED to be top five but could well slip to the middle of the pack because of age, health, and too few stars.

That spells 5-11 for me.

So many seem to think posts like this are emotional, gutless, an easy prediction, or some such.

I love this team as much as anyone on this board and have loved them longer that most. I cannot shut off my logical mind and override it with hope that so many things have to align for this team to be competitive.

It never works that way.

But I will enjoy the season because I love watching this team play.

My bad.....I read suggest and then took it as finite. Sorry, home slice.

Do you constantly berate your kids but claim to love them too?

I don't have kids...

But if I did, I can tell you that if my kids were constantly doing stupid ****, I wouldn't just ignore it and hope for, much less expect, them to be the best. I would be honest with them and myself and tell them what they need to do to correct their mistakes. Turning a blind eye to your kids' mistakes doesn't help them become better citizens.

You can parent how you want, and you can be a fan how you want. But don't tell me I don't love my (hypothetical) kids because I don't do it the way you do it. And don't tell me I'm not a FAN because I don't constantly pump sunshine up my team's ***.

If jaguars fans think they will win 3-4 games this year does that make them bad fans?

Frankly I think the offense will be better than last year if not by a great deal. If it can run better and more reliably that will make a huge difference. Honestly play calling might be the biggest difference; if that gets better then we might have a significantly more reliable offense.

Defense: It all comes down to two things: pass rush and how good our MLB whoever he is can play.
We do NOT have the talent some here claim in the front 7. We got maybe 3 guys that have shown they can get the job done. The rest are question marks.

If we can make it to the middle of the NFL in D that would be a huge accomplishment. I am thinking about 20th or so at best myself. That would still be a lot better and maybe just enough.

However if the schedule is as brutal as it looks we could have a better team and a worse record.
