Jamaal Charles, RB Texas

Rivers? what do you suppose we do with a 220lb LB in a 3-4 system?

Well actually he's 6'2 236lbs.

DallasCowboys.com has our top 3 ILB listed at

Bradie James 6'2 239
Akin Ayodele 6'2 240
Kevin Burnette 6'3 227

So to answer your ? I'd plug him into AA's spot and watch a LB that can cover and tackle. What do you think we'd do with him - Genius.

How anyone can listen to that and even question that cheating is common in college football is beyond me. The fact that he got into a major university is laughable

Well, you just got me to not want him. Almost ********. Literally, just a few points from being handicapped.

He understood the questions, so you are going to base your opinion of someone on their speech impediment and not the skill they bring to their craft?

Lets say for a second he had a legit speech impediment.

If thats the only thing you see wrong with what the hell he was trying to say, then I don't need to even elaborate why I'm against idiot players because quite frankly, Im not sure you could follow.

Have you ever seen Emmit speaking on TV? Before ya'll badmouth him you really should watch his film and then make an educated statement. If we want guys that just interview well they should be easy enough to find. Watch what this guy has done on the field and you will wonder why D-mac and the others are rated so high.

Yeah, Emmitt sounds like an idiot. But can you honestly draw a comparison between answering a postgame question and going on national TV as a sports analyst?

Again, Im sorry if he plays for your team but Im just not a fan of dumb players.

When was the last time Jerry Jones drafted a player from TU?

I honestly don't know but it would seem for someone that is in the same state and therefore should have plenty of people know what players are available from TU that it seems we have not taken one from there for some time.

Now to be fair sometimes we are not in the position to take someone we would like...Like a WR Roy Williams.

Please it is UT not TU, TU would be Tulsa University. :)
Regarding Charles I admit I'm a big Texas fan but when it comes to the Cowboys draft I don't care where a kid went to college if he has very good skills and talent then I would love to have that player and Charles has very good skills and talent.

People outside of texas don't care if it is UT, TU or UTI.:D

But the point is, it is odd that the cowboys don't seem to draft many players from UT, TU or UTI.;)

Well the context of this interview was after the scoring drive he just had in the north vs south game in High School. He's a 17 or 18 yr old student who just had scoring touchdown. Im sure he was caught off guard and a little excited for answering questions during a televised game. Part of the combine is interviewing, and if 3 yrs of college hasnt improved this, then you dont have to worry about jerry drafting him.

In the Jones or Rice thread, I discussed Jamaal Charles as a draft option for round 2 or round 3 to backup Marion Barber. However, I don't see where he is widely supported on this forum. Is there a reason or a knock against him as a RB? In terms of speed, he may be the fastest RB in the draft. I see Chris Johnson from East Carolina is getting a lot of support, but Charles is faster. Johnson ran a 10.62 in the 100-meter, while Charles ran a 10.23 as a freshman and won the Big-12 title...thats Terrance Newman-type speed, folks.

Here is my write-up from the other thread:

Jamaal Charles - Texas
Height: 6-1. Weight: 200. 40 Time: 4.34.

Strengths: Speed, home run threat, agility, solid interior runner, can break tackles, effective as a receiver, tough runner.
Weaknesses: size, tends to fumble
Comparative running style: Tiki Barber

I didn't always like Charles as an option, but he is really growing on me. Other than his fumbling, I really think this kid has it all. He can power his way inside but also has the speed to get around the corner and take it to the house. His abilities as a receiver make him an even more complete running back. With the blocking scheme that I already discussed, Charles would do a better job than Julius would getting through the running lanes and will make big plays with his speed and moves once he gets into the second level. He would make an excellent partner with Marion as well. Should Marion come out of the game with an injury, Charles should be able to carry the load. IF we can somehow get Charles in the 2nd or even 3rd round, I think we would have a huge steal on our hands.

I think he would be a great investment in the 2nd round but what do I know?

The only thing that concerns me is his ability to see the hole (at the professional level) and get to the second level before the hole closes. Anyone who has watched a lot of tape on Charles care to comment on his vision and elusiveness?

Charles is very good when it comes to hitting cut back lanes and does so very quickly. He has a nice burst into the line and knows how to run off his blockers. Once he is past the backers you are not going to catch him the guy has sprinter speed

So do a lot of people in the NFL.

No a lot of people do not have the speed of Charles. Charles has very good skill and really the only knock on him as been ball security which is something he worked hard on and improved on.

Thanks! I also heard that he is a better-than-average receiver. I still like him as an option in the 2nd round.

You will notice Charles is in my mock, despite those that have choosen to hate on him, so you don't have to defend him to me.

Even still, the NFL is a different animal. No player is bust-proof, and speed can be negated at the next level. Look at Reggie Bush.

Never said he was or any player is bust proof but I think Charles has as good of a chance to develop into a quality player as much as any RB entering the draft

If you really want to stir things up, call them UT-Austin.

Every year, the Longhorn fans on the board promote their guys. The biggest debate I remember was the Quentin Jammer-Roy Williams battle in 2002.
