Then you have nothing to worry about. Charles will not be available when Dallas picks in the 2nd.

If the Cowboys acquire Charles, it will have to be with an earlier pick (#28, or a trade).

I think he might be there late in Round 2. He looks good to me...especially as a complement back. Almost all teams use two back no anyway to some degree. There could be anywhere from 4-8 RBs taken before him. Most likely, IMO, he is the 5 or 6th RB taken...right there with Ray Rice and Chris Johnson...depending on the team's needs ahead of him.

Take a look at what he did in his last 5 college games, and you might begin to figure it out...

We're talkin' 116 carries for 897 yards (7.7 yards per carry, 179.4 yards rushing per game), plus 9 more receptions for 121 yards, making 125 touches for 1018 yards, or 203.6 yards per game)... and this wasn't done against a bunch of weak sisters, this came against Arizona State in a bowl game, against Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and Nebraska... he scored 10 TDs in those 5 games too...

7.7 yards per carry sure sounds like he was playing to his timed speed to me... but if that doesn't convince you, take a look at his scoring runs-- 15 yards, 32 yards, 8 yards, 24 yards, 75 yards, 18 yards, 22 yards, 40 yards, 86 yards, 25 yards... he also caught a 62 yard pass that he didn't score on...

Hmmm, for a guy who doesn't "play fast", he sure does have a lot of long TD runs... 10 TDs, and the shortest one was 8 yards... I count 4 plays over 40 yards, 5 over 30, 8 over 20, in just 5 games...

In point of fact, it's hard to find a bigger home run threat in this draft... he's one of those players who's a threat to take it all the way every time he touches the ball...

I think here and elsewhere you've made a very compelling case for Charles as a good prospect but what do you think about the contention that he doesn't run well inside and that his intelligence is lacking? Would the latter concern impact his slotting on your draft board?

How much have you actually watched of him? We can start there.

I think he's got good all around measurables and certainly produced in college. The one, in my opinion, true knock against him is how smart is he really? He's a mush mouth which leads many people to question his intelligence.

Certainly he won't be running for president anytime soon, but I think he'll be a fine RB.
Clinton Portis is as dumb a person as I have ever heard talk. But he can still run.

I just think that he gives a lousy interview, perhaps because having a microphone shoved under his face makes him real nervous... some folks are like that... but I don't really know if he's as dumb as he comes off in those interviews...

I've watched him play a lot of games, and he's quite willing to run between the tackles, indeed there were times when I wished his instincts had told him to bounce a play outside... with his speed, he can get away with that pretty often...

The interviews don't bother me and I'd have zero problems letting him run 10-15 times a game. What worries me, and this could be due to not watching this aspect of his game and the general rumor-mongering before the draft, is he isn't mental quick enough to read and react to a NFL blitz that's coming at my franchise QB. That's the entirety of my concern regarding Charles. Example from Draft Daddy blog:

Texas running back Jamaal Charles had a rough go of it with the interviews. Some teams threw up film of him and asked about protections and he had a lot of trouble. This could be clear evidence that tells you if you draft him, don't expect him to do much until his second season, at least.

All I know is if we can go CB and WR in 1 and still get Charles with our 2nd I'd be absolutely tickled to death.

Just give me this

1a -Cromartie
1b -Hardy
2 - Charles

and then the rest of the draft would be icing on the cake.

That would be pretty sweet...though maybe I sub C Johnson or R Rice for Charles (assuming F Jones is gone in Rd2).

I'd rather have about 5 other backs, before Charles, but if they wound up with him I wouldn't be as upset about it, as I previously thought I would be.
