If what we are seeing in the early days with Garrett is truly representative of how he will manage throughout the organization then I am on board with both feet. And it has nothing to do with it being Garrett himself. I just believe very strongly in the style that he is apparently demonstrating. And while using a podium instead of the table means absolutely nothing by itself, it could mean a ton if it represents how thoughtful, strategic, and intentional he plans to be with this job.
That said, do I have some concern about the brevity of his resume? Yes. Experience is a VERY valuable thing. But it also comes in many different appearances so while his resume may be lacking in some traditional senses I am not convinced that the necessary experience isn't still there. Also not convinced yet that it is.
Regardless of what Garrett may have yet to learn (to be determined), if these early snippets are indicative of his foundation, fabric, and vision then I am all in because it WILL yield excellent results in time. If that means this organization (coaches, players, etc) has to be purged and got backwards before going forward, I am all in because the destination IMO is assured if we take this route no matter how long the journey.
And while I am getting way ahead of myself in speculation
let me foolishly state that Stephen Jones countenance to me indicates that he will mesh VERY nicely with the style Garrett is preliminarily portraying and that SJ can play a very helpful role in supporting & furthering this approach with his dad.
This approach may take time because Rome isn't built in a day and ultimately the players and other coaches will have to decide if they will buy in or become part of those that Garrett escorts off the bus. So I will not say that Garrett's future should be decided by the 2010 W/L record. Rather what kind of resolve he demonstrates to laying the right foundation in the next 8 weeks. If he does that, I will want him back for 2011 and beyond.
I want this kind of leader as our HC. I want the right skills sets around him to shore up his weaknesses. And I want him to build HIS team, not simply make the best of what he inherits. I don't yet know if Garrett is that kind of leader. He's sure showing some interesting signs though.
