I'm not going to lie. I thought Garrett earned the opportunity after taking over for Wade. He took a team that was complete trash and won a few games. I was willing to give him a chance. Then he proceeded to basically do nothing and if it weren't for Romo, Garrett would have been exiled from the NFL after his 3rd 8-8 season. Romo basically bought Garrett extra time, and lots of it. How many games were there where the game plan was not working only to have Tony just call it himself in the 3rd and 4th quarter? It was nearly weekly in some of those years.

And this is coming from someone who used to have a "Turnover Tony" sig pic. There was a time when I didn't like his carelessness with the ball. He corrected it and saved Garrett's *** for nearly the entirety of Garrett's coaching stint in Dallas.

Garrett was never destined to be the next Landry no matter how many posters bought into that nonsense. McCarthy isn't great, but he's a hell of a lot better than Garrett could ever be. If McCarthy was fired after this next year, there'd be a team that would want him. Garrett is now relegated to creepy Zuckerberg smiles on SNF or whatever show he's on.
I never wanted him. He was horrible as OC despite Romo giving us big passing numbers.

I think Jerry actually killed what probably could've been a promising coaching career. You don't just hand out OC and HC jobs, it's ridiculous. And the guy simply wasn't even close to ready. Pretty much tells the story. A guy who could've coached until retirement is now out of coaching altogether.

What really got me worked up after he was hired was this ridiculous notion that only Wade Phillips was the problem. Then another pathetic 10 years of the most unprepared and uninspired football to really seal the deal. Those 5 crap wins of 2010 were his bread and butter. Garbage wins! Phillips and Garrett both should've been long gone right after the Minnesota loss. But neither should've been hired in 07.

This is kind of like comparing two (2) different types of terminal cancers....although, MM is the type of cancer that spreads slower because he is lazier.

The great coaching hires of 2007 was a monumental fail. That team was ready to takeoff but the GM would have none of that. Every decision the second Parcells left killed what could've been pretty dam good.

Now that we have had 3 years of Mike McCarthy, I'm going to do a head to head comparison of the first 3 years of Jason Garrett and Mike McCarthy. Then, for a bonus, I'll point something out that I've noticed about Mike.

Jason Garrett:
2011 (first full year) - 8-8 - Garrett showed some promise this season. The team really should've won the division in 2011. Unfortunately, the team collapsed and allowed the Giants to win it all.

2012 - 8-8 - this was about when things looked to be meh with Garrett. One of which was an absolute demolition we had on Monday Night against the Bears. We were also unable to stop RG3 as Washington swept us that year.

2013 - 8-8 - This season featured some heartbreaking losses against the Chargers and Broncos (this was the game where we learned what a morale victory was). We also got absolutely embarrassed against New Orleans. This was a game where it appeared that Garrett was completely outclassed. No matter what the team tried, Sean Payton was 3 steps ahead. Romo was injured in the win against Washington, and Orton would take over the next week against Philly and lose. This secured our 3rd straight 8-8 season.

Now for Mike McCarthy:
2020 6-10 - Painful year. Granted, there was a situation that year that prevented a proper offseason schedule. Additionally, we had 4 different QBs start that year. However, the defence was the worst we'd had since possibly 2013. This was McCarthy's fault as he brought in Mike Nolan, who clearly didn't work.

2021 12-4 (WC Loss) - The Cowboys sacked Nolan and replaced him with Dan Quinn and drafted Micah Parsons. It was during this season that the defence really improved. The Cowboys offense played well, and we won a game with Rush starting against the Vikings. This is an improvement season. We also saw adjustments being made during games. Ultimately, the Cowboys had a solid season, but lost to the 49ers in the WC Round.

2022 12-5 (WC Win, DR Loss) - the Cowboys finished with a similar record, but played well. Especially since we had a backup playing for 5 games who won 4 games. The team won a playoff game against the Bucs before falling to the 49ers.

I use 3 years as, just as with a QB, you sort of know what you have at HC by year 3. I think Mike has taken this team higher than Garrett did in their first 3 years. He also has been better when it comes to using a backup QB as Garrett couldn't use one. This is highlighted by the fact that both coaches had Rush, and Rush has been much better under McCarthy. This shows that coaching matters. As for what I've noticed. Under Garrett, there were games when things weren't going our way, and the team would give up. He didn't adjust well. McCarthy is the opposite. There's always seems to actually be a plan for each team as opposed to copying the same plan every game and daring the opposite team to stop us. He also adjusts, which was noticeably lacking with Garrett.

Moral of the story, coaching matters. A competent coach, as this story shows, makes a world of difference.

Jerry logic. Wade became the head coach because he had been a head coach but he was not a good one, maybe to nice, I think he was defensive minded? Then JJ thought about firing him and letting Garrett take over, and we know how that story ended.

McCarthy gets hired but has to keep Moore as the play caller because he was a genius like Garret was supposed to be. Now Moore is gone. Now Coach McCarthy has his team. How long he lasts depends on two things, JJ and a coach killer.

Are you kidding, Booger didn't even have a job title for him yet and hadn't ruled out HC! He bought all the BS Aikman was selling about his friend and the other teams' interest in Garrett made him itchy to have him.

And then who mentors Garrett? Booger Caused Garrett to run off to Miami and jump on Jimmy's boat with Aikman and go to see Coach K to ask "what do I do now"?

Did we think Garrett would never act like he belonged in the job? Not the first time a family name has paved the way and Garrett never improved in 10 years, he just kept waiting for the team to improve.

We can debate the talent levels, but there is no debate about the dead money. That's a measurable fact.
Maybe so, maybe not. But I do know that other Cowboys coaches had it far, far worse than Garrett ever did. His failings were his, not because he was placed at any huge disadvantage by talent or cap.

I don't know what Aikman was selling without a resume. Just Jerry being Jerry! Thinking they found the next Vince Lombardi or something? Plus you got Jerry teaching you the ropes. That's a quality coaching tree.
