It'd be nice if Avery let Kidd run the offense instead of constantly screaming instructions from the sidelines to run isos for dirk and josh howard.

and kidd has actually shot well from 3 since he came to the mavs.

Not sure why you are so surprised. Check out his career shooting stats:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/2625/career;_ylt=AroYp1rhXn7D4T6vuen5LoWkvLYF

He has never shot over 45% for a single season. Ironically, since joining the Mavs he has a 44.0 FG% (0.4 points less than his career high) and an excellent 55.2% mark from behind the arc (a career high by far, albeit over only 15 games).

I guess I don't understand. Granted I don't follow the NBA that closely until the playoffs, but I thought Kidd was supposed to be one the best players in the league. Clearly the Mavs must think so or else they wouldn't have made the deal to get him. Am I missing something?

If this deal were done three or four years ago, you would be right.

But he's now 35 years old, so he's obviously lost a step from his prime playing days. He was brought in to provide leadership and a quality passer, two traits many people believed the Mavs sorely lacked, as well as a clutch closer who would help the Mavs finish games in crunch time.

On the flip side, he costs $20 million a year, cost the Mavs two young contributors (Devin Harris and Dasagna Diop), his defense is slipping, he's 35 (as I already mentioned), and his shooting percentage is terrible.

One benefit of his contract though is it will expire in two years, which gives us options if we need to trade him in the next few years.

Thanks for the update.

As for trading him in a few of years, if he is as bad as you say, what will his value be then? Can't be much.

The point is not in the value of the player. It will be in the value of his contract. Since in the NBA you have to trade equal value of contracts, you get a guys with bloated deals suddenly attracting a lot of value when their contracts are about up. A team wanting to dump salaries will eye the expiring contract as an opportunity to free up cap space in free agency.

For example, LeBron James becomes a free agent right after Jason Kidd's contract expires. Even if Kidd is done going into his last year, there should be teams chomping at the bit to open up space to offer him a large contract.

Sadly, New York would be perfect for him but their contract situation is so screwed up they would have to pull off a miracle to clear enough space that soon.

But I don't think Jason Kidd is bad, really. I think he still has value to this team, it's just that he isn't the all-world player he was five years ago. I admit I wasn't on board with the deal when it became official. I think they have a good foundation for the future, or did have one, and they basically put all their cards in and went for it this year and next. It's a big gamble, and one they have little chance of pulling off (imo).

whoa. did you come up with that on your own? I've never heard that one before.

the problem is that Kidd isn't being allowed to do what he does best. he's not allowed to run the half court offense. what's the point of having kidd in the game if avery wants jason terry to bring the ball up court or the team just to run isos.

also, the mavs have pretty much no athletic players who want to cut to the basket. thats where kidd's talents shines. the mavs just don't have the personnel to fit kidd.

when kidd backs down the opposing pg, something he's been able to do regularly, no one cuts to the basket. instead they just camp at the 3pt line. when kidd is able to penetrate, no one cuts.

hell, even when dirk gets doubled at the high post, no one cuts. it usually just ends up with a bricked 3 instead of a easy layup or dunk like it's supposed to.

right now, my patience is running really thin with Osh howard (see, I can do it too). the guy has not improved at all from last year. he's a chucker with pretty much one go to move - cross over.step back. brick.

At least Dirk and Dampier have been playing well since the trade.

I just want to vent about the game last night. I can't believe Avery didn't put Dampier back into the game late. He only had 2 fouls, only played 19 minutes and still had 9 boards. We could have really used his rebounding with 5 minutes left when the Lakers kept getting offensive rebounds.

Reportedly Josh's back is still recovering, which is why he's reluctant to take it to the basket and puts up jumpers.

But yeah, I agree with everything else. This Mavs team is not athletic enough for Kidd to go crazy with dishes in the paint, or the offensive schemes keep the players on the perimeter. Either way, they need to open it up more (or push themselves more) if they're going to take advantage of his talents.

Oh im not surprised at all.

I've said for years this guy is the most overrated player in the league.

Now that I get to see him on a nightly basis its confirmed.

When he is on the court its basically 4 on 5 with Kidd being no threat.

Heres a question I have...

What do the Mavs look like when they are playing at their best?

They don't even have an identity imo.

I look forward to the beat down Boston will give us tonight.

I look forward to the beatdown Boston gets in the post season or Finals if they get that far. They have yet to face a Western Conference Team in post season mode.

They don't exactly have defined roles for their players. Who is the defensive stopper, the 3 pt shooter, the low post threat, the energy guy off the bench, the 6th man (Stackhouse, no Terry, no Stackhouse)? Almost all of their big stars (Dirk, Josh, Stack, Terry) are perimeter jump shooters. Kidd is the passer. Damp is the defensive big man in the paint who blocks shots and gets rebounds. Who takes it to the basket and finishes?

Dirk is the man when they need a big shot, but who can they rely on to step up when he's being defended? The answer we got during the last two playoff series defeats - no one.
