Maybe Witten heard some inside scoop about Romo returning (as the Head Coach in 2020) and wanted to be a part of that. This year to "warm up".

Witten replaces the 2nd or 3rd draft pick we would have used on TE, which will now be a late round pick who goes to the Practice Squad. Rico is in the same position no matter what, he has to break out next year or he gets cut.

And for everyone complaining about Witten, there is very little doubt the team told him he would have a reduced role if he came back - and Witten agreed.

Also 2017 was the worst season of his career with 63 catches and that still would have been the 8th best total in the NFL for a TE. I actually like the idea of Witten and Jarwin as the primary TEs with Schultz rotating into both spots.

I thought the same at first, but then this occurred to me:

What if this doesn't mean they don't draft a TE at #58? What if this makes it even more likely? What if they decide to draft a young guy and give him a year to learn at the feet of the Master?

It's not what I would do, but it might be what they end up thinking?

Just a thought anyway.

My serious answer: Jamize Olawale.

With Witten's return the Cowboys probably won't carry a fullback and Olawale's a free agent anyway. They can go with Witten, Jarwin, and Schultz and perhaps a draft pick at tight end instead.

The Rico Gathers project has run it's course and I can't see the Cowboys re-signing the oft-injured Geoff Swaim.

Eifert has played in 28 games over the past five years. He can't stay healthy. I think the Cowboys will still entertain the thought of bringing him here, but they will have to be careful with the $$$.

I think they will draft a TE just because this is such a deep draft class. IMO they would have taken a TE in the 3rd or 4th round unless someone like Irv Smith dropped to 58. (I don't think 58 was a lock for a TE to be picked).

Now I think the TE pick is more like 4th or later, someone who is more of a small school physical project than one of the projected second rounders who can play right away. They still have to develop that kind of player anyway, Jarwin is a good receiving TE but he isn't an every down time. Schultz is guy who can develop into an improved version of Swain - a good #2 who can play as the #1 guy but its not optimal.

Eifert is the crazy stripper girlfriend of TEs. Looks great for short periods of time but its always more trouble than its worth.

I agree. But the fact Witten is back as a 20-25 play per game guy on a one year deal isn't changing the Cowboys' long term plans at tight end. He's just here for depth and leadership.
