These two and Morris Claiborne are the main reason our defense is just above average and not very good. Not to mention better picks in those 3 spots and maybe we win in 2014 and 2016 against A-Rod. Thanks a lot for being such a gambler, Jerry. I currently have doubts Smith and Gregory are ever going to become anything in the NFL.

Gregory and Smith were drafted in 2015 and 2016. How could they affect the 2014 game?

This just seems like a rant for rant's sake.................

Not to mention. That at the time Claiborne wasn’t seen as a risk at all. Claiborne was a very very highly rated prospect that really didn’t have any questions coming into the draft.

He just has been injury prone in the NFL. But there was no way to know that while he was in college because he wasn’t injury prone in colllege.

Fletcher Cox was the point with Morris Claiborne, I apologize, I thought that was clear.

Yes but you mentioned Jerry’s “gambling”.

The Claiborne pick was nothing like the Jaylon or Gregory picks. It wasn’t a “gamble” at all. No more than any draft pick is. It just didn’t work out. And Claiborne was just as highly rated a prospect as Fletcher Cox was.

20/20 hindsight: for those who will always need two (or more) attempts to make one decision.

Meanwhile, Jaylon has played a total of 17 NFL games and Gregory 15. I understand the issues of each, but how about seeing a few more games before giving up on them?

Could you at least wait until the defense has a bad game to whine about it? After a good defensive performance it just comes across as complaining for the sake of complaining.

Exactly. And as for Jaylon Smith, it's been a wait, but he certainly looks like he will be at least a solid player. Who knows, maybe more than that.

I think if the OP would take the time to look, even the better defenses over the last few years have missed or overrated on some high draft picks.

Don't bother. Hindsight makes people look super smart. Makes for terrible threads but at least the OP can sound smart (to themselves)

The only reason Claiborne was a gamble was because we traded up to get him, and it took our 1st and 2nd rounders.

Smith may pan out in the gamble, and if Gregory stays clean he could work out in the end.

If we are talking gambles, Lee was a gamble, and it has worked out pretty good for the most part. Most draft picks are gambles, none of them have proven anything at the pro level when drafted...

Not to defend the OP because his post was clearly nonsense, but the "gamble" part of the Claiborne pick was the trade up to get him. Cowboys gave up #45 to move up from 14 to 6 to land Claiborne who most everyone agreed was the best defensive player in the draft.

It's not ridiculous to argue that our FO has played fast and loose with 2nd round picks. It is, however, ridiculous to argue that our defense is not very good after one game and that Gregory and Jaylon will never amount to anything in the NFL.

Jaylon has yet to justify his draft status. Gregory (I believe) has 2 sacks since he was drafted. Simply can't produce or stay healthy. Our defense is above average but with better picks in all 3 spots it could've been elite.

Every team can make this argument though. If they had picked better here or there, they'd be a better team.

And your point was largely undermined when you claimed the 2014 could have been different if we had done a better job picking players instead of Gregory and Smith, two guys drafted AFTER the 2014 season.

Facts have no place in discussions about Jerry and Garrett

Please only bring up lollipops and rainbows and unicorns and of course #believe

Remember those "believe" days? Whatever happened to all those I wonder?

Actually it only took our 2nd rounder to get Claiborne - we still got a first rounder, and it was 8 picks higher than our first rounder would have been otherwise.

I'm angry, too. If every single one of our draft picks had panned out to be the best available pick at the position, there's no telling how many superbowls we could have won.

Those were obviously stupid decisions

Jaylon and Randy are 23 and 25 years old respectively. It might be a little early to start kicking dirt on their careers.

Our defense certainly would have been better in recent years if we had taken safe, solid defensive players with those picks. But if you want elite?? You need to have players with high ceilings and unlimited upside. Jaylon and Randy panning out are how you become elite.
