Actually it only took our 2nd rounder to get Claiborne - we still got a first rounder, and it was 8 picks higher than our first rounder would have been otherwise.

Exactly

Remind me who we took with our 'remaining' first rounder once we took Claiborne with our 2nd rounder? I think I missed that pick

I always hated when people made arguments like that. I remember huge arguments here whether the Eagles paid too much for Wentz, with people arguing they gave up two first round picks amongst other picks to move up. But they really only gave up one first round pick (2017).......... they just moved higher in the 2016 draft's first round.

Those were obviously stupid decisions

I disagree. I think Gregory was way too much of a gamble. But I don't think Jaylon was. I still think you're going to have a generational talent there that you just had to wait on. I truly don't think our issues lie with the draft at all. I think it lies with coaching and cap management, in that order. Dak was OK and Garrett destroyed him by letting our offensive line wither and leaving Chaz Green in there.

These two and Morris Claiborne are the main reason our defense is just above average and not very good. Not to mention better picks in those 3 spots and maybe we win in 2014 and 2016 against A-Rod. Thanks a lot for being such a gambler, Jerry. I currently have doubts Smith and Gregory are ever going to become anything in the NFL.
I can’t disagree. I think we will start seeing results from them. Jaylon is flying around and IMO is above average LB. BUT, we wasted 2 years letting him rehab. So we get this year and next year to get awesome and then he will want big bucks. Do we get a rehab discount?

Same with Gregory. WTH is going on with his contract. And for all the awesome we saw in that preseason game where was he Sunday? Maybe he did ok but don’t remember hearing his name called. But I was in such shock that I could have missed it.

What you 'think' is meaningless
What is actually happening is important
The real value of a high draft pick is that you can get an impact player that is cheap

Jaylon is just becoming even average in year 3
Even if he becomes a really good player (he's never going to be the pie in the sky generational talent you keep hanging your hat on) next year he'll be a FA and will either leave or we'll have to pay him a lot

Therefore we have lost out on the real benefit of a high draft pick

Miles Jack was sitting there but we relied on hope as our strategy as usual as usual

Gregory got a mild concussion early in the game.

So, I hope this hasn’t been asked 100 times already, but is Gregory pretty much concussed and banned for life at this point??

I can’t stand that I got so excited for him..

I'm gonna go out on a limb a say George Selfie, Nick Hayden, and Jeremy Minvey being 3 of your 4 defensive line starters were a much bigger problem than Claiborne in 2014!

Not to mention. That at the time Claiborne wasn’t seen as a risk at all. Claiborne was a very very highly rated prospect that really didn’t have any questions coming into the draft.

He just has been injury prone in the NFL. But there was no way to know that while he was in college because he wasn’t injury prone in colllege.

If it works (Dez, Sean Lee, Frederick, & Lawrence) then they claim it wasnt a gamble and a nice pick.

If it doesnt(Claiborne & Gregory) then it was a stupid gamble we should have never made.

I hate hindsight evaluators

Exactly. And as for Jaylon Smith, it's been a wait, but he certainly looks like he will be at least a solid player. Who knows, maybe more than that.

I think if the OP would take the time to look, even the better defenses over the last few years have missed or overrated on some high draft picks.
Why wait and gather info when you can start another thread?

Jaylon thanks you for stirring it back up. Does anyone know when Jaylon's brace will be removed?

The bigger problem with the Claiborne pick is Dallas moved up from 16 to 6 to get him. The eagles moved from 15 to 12 to get Fletcher Cox! Cox would have solved a lot of dline issues for a while now!

Sorry to hear that. Give him a bong hit and send him back out. lol. So how long did he play?

It wasn't long - I'm thinking it was maybe early 2nd quarter. Seems he also tweaked a knee too, but I don't think that was serious.

Exactly. I FINALLY get excited about Gregory again. Then there's more possible substance abuse issues and 2 more injuries and another 0 sack/impact game. I'm done with him, time to roll with Dorrance Armstrong and a FA at RDE and Tank and Taco at LDE.

20/20 hindsight: for those who will always need two (or more) attempts to make one decision.

Meanwhile, Jaylon has played a total of 17 NFL games and Gregory 15. I understand the issues of each, but how about seeing a few more games before giving up on them?

Another point here is that one of the big advantages of those premium picks is that you can get good players for cheap. By missing on these guys for 2-3 years, we are wasting those rookie contracts.

How did Jerry gamble on Mo? He was considered the best defensive player in that draft.

Probably the same time he’s supposed to “besst out” which was last year.
